Something Blue
Months passed after the group defeated Maddox, saving the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella. After that, the group settled into a new normal, they went to school together and they all became unlikely friends.
Five months later, Chloe Charming had a wonderful idea.
One Monday afternoon Chloe asked Pink to meet her at the library, she had something very important to tell her. Once there, Pink settled into one of the tables eager to see her blue-haired friend, “Hi Chloe!” they gave each other a hug, then Chloe gave Pink a lemonade and a piece of her mom’s carrot cake, “Oh, you’re already bribing me… what’s going on, Miss Charming”
Chloe rolled her eyes, “I’m not bribing you, Pink… These are just some small gifts for you”
Pink narrowed her eyes, “I see that, but why…?”
Chloe let out a huff, placing both of her arms in the table suddenly, “Alright, I do need help with something” Pink made her famous ‘I knew it” face, “But, I know this is something you will enjoy”
“Alright, Miss Charming, you have my attention” she smiled widely at her friend, “Now, tell me!”
“I want to throw a little party at my parents castle”
Pink opened her eyes in complete surprise, “Oh, my hearts! Of course I’ll help!”
With that the preparations started, though Pink and her other friends were very confused with everything. Chloe had decided on neon decorations, music played by Hazel, and several other things that sounded like someone else… but not like Chloe. Hazel spoke to Pink in private, “I know it isn’t my place to judge, princess” she hesitated, “But, all this doesn’t feel like Chloe”
Pink nodded, “I agree, but she says this is what she wants”
Hazel gave her a wide smirk, “I know who this party reminds me off”
Pink crossed her arms, her notepad flat on her chest, “I say we test her”
Hazel moved out of the way, “Lead us away”
They walked towards Chloe, who was giving harsh directions to Max, the boy looked increasingly confused. He made a small face to Hazel and Pink, in search of some sympathy, but they just shrugged they were as confused as he was. “Hey, Chloe… we have a question for you” Pink said shyly.
Chloe waved them off, “Not right now! Max, apparently, doesn’t know what straight means”
He let out a soft giggle, “Damn right” he said to himself, but Chloe heard him. She was about to launch forward, maybe to kill him, so Hazel stopped her.
“Hey! Let’s take a small break” she turned the blue-haired girl around, “Help us?”
Chloe gave them an exasperated sigh, “Sure…”
“We need you to give us the menu for the party,” Pink said.
Chloe stopped for a brief moment, thinking, remembering something.
Four months ago in Red and Chloe’s dorm…
Chloe and Red decided that they wanted to do a movie night once every week. Mostly it was just a couple of hours for them to be together. But for Red, it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about Auradon and what everybody did for fun. Chloe enjoyed those times the most, she got to spend more time with her best friend.
“I don’t know Chloe, we didn’t do parties in Wonderland” Red said, making a face at the boring party they were watching. “Besides, tea parties, classical music, it sounds so boring! I would throw a big party”
Chloe laughed, a little bit disappointed that her friend stood up from the comfortable position they were in, “Well, what would you do for a party?”
Red moved around the room with excitement, “Something big! Neon colors, loud music, good food, and obviously my best friend!”
Chloe let out a giggle, “Oh, am I an important part for the mix?”
Red rolled her eyes, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, “Well, duh! It wouldn’t be fun if you aren’t there, princess” she sat down again, finishing the movie. “Hey, is it a normal occurrence for people to get presents?”
Chloe nodded sleepily, hugging red closer, “Sometimes…” she was drifting off, almost falling asleep.
“And if you were to get a present, what would it be?”
Chloe mumbled something, from that mess Red only understood one word ‘Blue’ she had no idea what that meant, but she fell asleep as well.
Back to the present…
“Well, some pink lemonade for the drinks,” she thought for another moment, “Um, flamingo feather cupcakes… and, some pizza?”
Hazel scoffed, “I can name one thing, only one that I know you like”
Chloe looked up at Hazel, “What do you mean by that?”
Sensing the tension, Pink stepped in between them, “What she means is, this party doesn’t feel entirely like you…” Chloe looked at the floor. Hazel and Pink shared a look, “Hey! How about we give it a little Charming charm”
Chloe looked up again, “Well… I always wanted to go to a masquerade”
Pink smiled widely, “That’s it! We’ll have a neon masquerade”
The tension disappeared almost immediately, Chloe looked happier and the party was finally taking shape.
In Auradon Prep people were already bussing about Chloe Charming’s party. Chloe was a fairly popular person in Auradon, she was Prince Charming and Cinderella’s daughter, she was the captain of the fencing team. She wanted to take up turney, but she had no time left with everything she did around the school. She was so well known around school, that people were already speculating about the guest list for the party.
On Thursday morning, Pink arrived with a big bag of invitations. Most people got an invitation, everybody except for Max, Squeaky, Squirmy, Hazel, Robbie, Felix, Luis, and Red. At the end of the day they were shocked, they had not received their invitations for the party. “Wow! Rude! We helped her set everything up”
Hazel nodded, rolling her eyes with disgust, “I even set up a little playlist for the party”
Chloe appeared around the corner, “Don’t be angry… I made special invitations for my closest friends”
They all sighed with relief, the invitation was blue and gold, it said they were honored guests in the party. To her closest friends, which also helped her set everything up, she made hand made masks for all of them. “This is nice, Chloe! Thank you!” Robbie exclaimed, trying his mask on.
“I made them to match” It was true, the couples of the group were matched with each other. Pink and Hazel had pink and brown masks, Robbie and Felix had dark purple and red masks. The Smees, twin brothers, had matching masks both cyan and white colored.
Luis got a yellow one, Max got a purple one, and Red had the best creation that Chloe had made. Her mask was red, sure, but it had some blue accents to it. “Chlo… these are so beautiful” Red said, hand going to her chest in awe.
Luis touched Red’s mask, “Yeah, they’re cute!” they giggled together… right they are a couple, Chloe thought, rolling her eyes in annoyance.
Two months ago…
Chloe moved around school looking for her friends. As she made a corner she saw Red, she immediately smiled, the sight of the other girl always brightened her day. But, before she could get close to her friend, that tall muscular guy appeared beside her… Luis.
Chloe stopped on her tracks, staring at the interaction ahead of her. Red was showing something to Luis, he laughed loudly before placing a small kiss on her cheek. The redhead blushed because of the kiss, and that soft blush made Chloe’s heart ache. She grabbed her chest softly, finally realizing something she had buried deep down since she became friends with Red. Chloe liked Red, really liked her, it was starting to go into love territory and that terrified her.
She turned around, walking fast, under the watchful eyes of the rest of her friends. “What’s going on now?” Hazel asked Pink
“I think she saw Red and Luis”
Hazel turned her head around the corner, looking at the couple kissing, “So what?” she thought for a moment, “Oh!” realization dawned on her, “Do you think Chloe likes Luis?”
Pink rolled her eyes, “You’re lucky I like you, Hook” she grabbed her girlfriend’s face, forcing her to look at Red, who moved away from the kiss just slightly disappointed.
“I see…”
Back to the present…
It was Friday, the day of the amazing party that Chloe had planned. The classes flew by for Chloe, her friends couldn’t stop talking about the amazing night they were going to have together. However, Chloe’s mind was somewhere else entirely, she was completely absorbed in her redhead friend. She hadn’t showed up that day, she was worried about her, and she was wondering if she would come to her party.
She leaned in close to Pink, “Where’s your sister?”
Pink shrugged, concentrated, looking at her notes “She said she wouldn’t come today… she had a date or something” Chloe’s face flashed a disappointed look, Pink felt pity for her, so she corrected herself, “She’s just busy, but I’m sure she’ll be there tonight”
Chloe nodded, “Sure”
After that, the day was a blur, she got home and got dressed. Her mother helped her with the final details, making sure she looked wonderful in the blue dress she picked for the night. “You look absolutely stunning, dear!”
Chloe looked at herself in the mirror, she liked how she looked, she smiled brightly, “Thank you for making it mom”
Cinderella smiled at her daughter, “Of course, my love”
From the doorway, her father and brother appeared, “How are my two girls?” he asked, his charming smile lighting up the room. Chloe stood up, showing off her new dress, “You look amazing, sweetie!”
Chad hugged her sister close, “I bet you’ll be the prettiest girl at the ball, though, I do have a question” Chloe nudged him to continue, “Why does your mask have hints of red in it?”
“I-I thought it was a good touch”
Her brother nodded, “Yeah! It looks amazing”
They all walked downstairs, her friends were arriving, and as more and more people filled the castle, the blue-haired girl was getting more anxious. She was trying not to panic but the list was getting shorter and there was no sign of her red-haired friend.
“Hey… we should room together again next year” Red said out of nowhere. Chloe looked up from her school work.
“Was that not the obvious choice?”
Red giggled, “I was just making sure… I really enjoy spending time with you, princess”
Chloe smiled, a slow blush creeping on her cheeks. There was no denying it anymore, every time Red complimented her, every time she made her laugh, or blush, or simply stare at her. Every new thing was a confirmation, Chloe was falling more and more with each day that passed.
“Well, I enjoy spending time with you too, Red”
They went back into their school work. Occasionally Chloe stole glances at the redhead, she looked so cute when she was in full concentration mode. Sometimes, the blue-haired girl believed that Red was looking at her too, but it was impossible.
Red stood up abruptly, “Hey! Let’s do something fun”
“Red… it’s almost midnight, what could we possibly do at this time?”
Red smirked, she extended her hand to the princess in front of her, “M’lady” Chloe took her hand, narrowing her eyes in confusion, “Follow me”
Chloe and Red ran around campus together, looking for something or somewhere, Chloe wasn’t sure yet. As they moved around the school Red remembered something. They got to the potions class, where Red moved a book that opened a secret passageway. Chloe’s breath hitched on her throat, as Red led her up the weird stairs, “Red, where are we going”
The redhead shushed her softly, "Somewhere fun” she whispered.
As they reached the top, Chloe realized where they were, the top of the building. They walked around the top hand in hand, seeing the view and wondering what the rest of the world had to offer. Sure, Chloe had traveled a little bit more than Red. Before, the redhead was trapped in a timeline where her mother kept her secluded, so there was no way she was able to travel beyond Wonderland. She often thought about that, her liberty was granted by the Maddox of her timeline and the blue-haired girl that sat down beside her.
“Sometimes… when I’m asleep, I dream about my past timeline… how my mother was evil and how I thought I was going to turn out like her”
Chloe grabbed Red’s chin softly, making her look at her, “You’re nothing like your mother, you hear me?”
Red giggled softly, “I wish I become like this new version of my mom… she’s so sweet, she seems like a great person, but I’m just getting to know her really”
Chloe nudged her softly, “Hey! I’m sure you’ll grow to love her, like with Pink, and our new friends”
“And you,” Red whispered, getting closer to the blue-haired girl.
“Yeah… and me…” Red moved one of Chloe’s blue hair out of her face. WIth that closeness she caressed her face softly, “Red… I-”
But before she could finish they watched a couple of nightguards scream, “Hey! You two!”
They stood up quickly, easily getting down by the secret pathway and making it home safely. Neither of them talked about what had happened at the rooftop, but they both thought about it all night long.
Back at the present…
Chloe moved around the party with her friends. Singing, dancing, having a nice party, but every once in a while she would steal glances at the castle doors, hoping, waiting. She knew that the most probable thing was that Red was with Luis. However, she still had her expectations intact, she trusted her friend and she knew that at any minute she would barge in.
Hazel played music, Pink close to her in the booth, “Where’s your sister?” she asked over the music, almost screaming at the pink-haired girl.
“I don’t know”
They both shared a look as they saw how miserable Chloe looked, it was pretty clear that she had thrown the party for Red, but she didn’t even show up for Chloe.
The blue-haired girl hadn’t seen Luis all night long either, so she made the assumption that they were together. She wanted to feel happy for her friend, she really did, but everyday her feelings grew inside of her, and she was becoming increasingly bad at hiding them.
At Hazel’s order, the Smee twins decided to stay by Chloe’s side the whole party. They made sure she ate, she had fun, and they tried to make her forget about Red… at least for a little while.
Eventually, and after several hours of partying, the guest started to leave the castle. One by one they were leaving in their cars or horses, and as more people left, Chloe’s anxious thoughts grew inside of her. Her friends tried to cheer her up, and it did work, but everytime someone brought Red up she would turn to look at the door.
Her friends were getting tired and she knew that, so she began to kick them out gently. Hazel, and Pink, especially Pink, felt on the fence about leaving her alone with her thoughts. But, she knew she had to clean up, and sleep, so it was better to get a head start with the cleaning. They left too, dragging Max, Squirmy, Squeaky, Felix, and Robbie with them. As she saw them walking down the steps someone tapped her on her shoulder, “Hey Chloe!” he gave her that usual bright smile, “Thanks for the party, I really enjoyed myself!”
Chloe nodded, but she was still looking at him in confusion, “When did you get here?”
He giggled, “What do you mean? I’ve been here all night”
Chloe moved her head to the side, “But, what about Red?”
He shrugged, his smile falling slightly, “How would I know? I haven’t seen her all day”
“I thought she was with you”
His smile brightened again, “No, not at all, she was busy all day” he took out his mask, showing a couple of purple details his aunt had put on for him, “Besides, I came to the party with Max”
Chloe raised an eyebrow, “What? Aren’t you and Red dating?”
He turned his head to the side, “We broke up a couple of months ago” he waved at the crew, asking them to wait for him, “She told me it didn’t feel right for her… and if I’m being honest it didn’t feel right for me either” He turned to look at everybody, his eyes locking in Max’s brown eyes, “Maybe I chose wrong, but now I think I know what to do” with that he turned to leave.
Chloe sighed, she hoped she knew what to do, just like Luis had said.
Her mother helped her clean up in silence, but seeing her daughter’s distraught face, she decided to talk, “What’s going on, my love? Why do you have that sad face?”
Chloe wiped a small tear that fell from her eye, “Mom… Red never showed up…”
Suddenly it clicked for Cinderella, the small Red details in Chloe’s mask. The whole neon part theme, the food, everything. She knew her daughter way too well and she knew that when it came to parties, her Chloe would rather have a small get together with her closest friends. “Oh sweetie…” she hugged her daughter close, “Maybe she’s just running late… she must have a good reason” she thought for a second, “Do you want me to accompany you while we wait?”
Chloe raised an eyebrow, “Would you do that for me mom?”
Cinderella smiled softly, “Of course, let’s sit at the stairs and wait for a little bit” But, alas, her princess never came. Cinderella turned to her daughter, “Darling, maybe we should-”
“Yeah. It’s late” They began to stand up, and as Cinderella signaled for the guards to close the gate, they heard something.
From a distance… hoofbeats… loud… getting louder and louder.
Then, a voice.
“CHLOOOO… EEEEEEE”
Cinderella and Chloe freeze, the sound getting louder and closer by the second. The guards looked at Cinderella in confusion, but she smiled, she signaled for them to open the gate again. She kissed her daughter’s head before turning around and entering the castle.
Red was getting closer, at full velocity, “Chloe!” she screamed again, “Don’t close the gates, please!” The guards let her in with ease. Once inside she jumped off the horse, almost falling on her face as she did that.
Chloe walked slowly down the stairs, as she reached the bottom Red pulled her in a big hug, “I’m so, so, sorry for running really late” she let down her hood, showing the mask that Chloe had made for her.
Chloe smiled brightly, “It doesn’t matter” she hugged her again, “You came…” she moved, looking at Red’s brown eyes, “Red, I-”
“Wait” she let go softly, “I got you something” She grabbed a small velvet bag from her pocket, from there she pulled a small sapphire ring, “Once, almost asleep, you told me that you wanted something blue” she took a small pause, putting the ring in Chloe’s finger, “I had to fight the Jabberwocky’s spawn… that was not so fun” she giggled softly, “But, I got one of Wonderland’s biggest treasure” she kissed the ring in Chloe's hand, “And now, I’m giving it to you”
Chloe covered her mouth with her other hand, while staring at the ring, “You didn’t have to”
Red pulled her close again, just enough to see her eyes, those eyes that kept Red up at night. She had been dreaming all week about this moment, “Of course I did!” she gave Chloe a soft kiss on her cheek, “Happy Birthday, Chlo”
