Work Text:
The shadows inside the rotting timber frame of the abandoned mill were thick enough to choke on, but for the Entity, they were an intoxicating feast. Dust motes danced in the moonlight, suspended in the thick, stifling wave of terror rolling off the human pinned beneath him in the dust.
Naim was practically vibrating with fear. It oozed from his skin like salt, rich, hot, and potent enough to sustain the Entity for days. The monster drank it in, savoring the bitter, metallic tang of the boy's panic as it filled the quiet room. What a foolish little creature. To trek into the most isolated patch of town all on his own, straight into a decaying mill where no one would ever hear him scream.
Naim had been desperate, naively chasing a ghost, wanting so badly to find the real Ryan. He hadn't bothered to calculate the danger, hadn't considered that the creature hunting them would capitalize on his desperation to end this little game once and for all.
Once Naim was gone, Ryan would be effortless prey. The blonde lover boy was so deeply entwined in this nameless, tragic relationship that he would shatter completely. Broken by grief, Ryan would offer no real resistance.
Beneath the Entity's crushing weight, Naim fought with everything he had left. His small frame bucked violently off the floorboards, heels kicking wildly, sending splintered wood and decades of dirt scattering into the dark. He thrashed against the immovable weight, his fingers clawing furiously at the shadow-slick hands clamped around his throat. Short nails dug in, dragging down, trying to wedge a single millimeter of leverage between the Entity's grip and his crushed windpipe.
"P-please..." Naim wheezed, the sound barely a ragged scratch against the suffocating pressure.
Desperate, his hand fumbled into his jacket pocket, pulling out a cheap metal lighter. He struck the wheel twice, a tiny spark flickering before catching into a desperate flame aimed directly at the monster's eyes. The Entity didn't even flinch, with a fluid, contemptuous swipe, he struck Naim's wrist. Pain shot up the boy's arm, and the lighter went skittering into the dark corners of the mill, useless and out of reach.
As the Entity pressed down harder, Naim’s mouth gaped wide open in an agonizing, silent scream for oxygen. His neck extended back, straining till the tendons stood out like taut wires, his chin tilted toward the rafters as his body desperately tried to align his crushed airway. His chest heaved in violent, involuntary spasms, his ribs flaring outward so sharply against his pale skin that every bone outlined itself under his shirt, expanding violently before collapsing in on themselves as his diaphragm fought for air that wouldn't come.
The Entity leaned in closer, a shiver of dark ecstasy running through his shadowed form. He revelled in the raw, agonizing sensation of the boy’s suffering, feeding off every spike of agony, every desperate pulse of panic. Wanting to steal the very last traces of terror straight from the source, the Entity leaned down fully and pressed a deep, open kiss against Naim's twitching, gaping lips. He drank in the cold, desperate gasps, stealing the dying air right out of the boy's mouth as Naim choked beneath him.
Pressing his chest hard against Naim's, the Entity focused on the delicate rhythm beneath the boy's sternum. He grinned into the kiss as he felt Naim’s heart struggle from the lack of oxygen, the steady, desperate pounding suddenly faltered, stuttering into a chaotic, jumbled mess of irregular, frantic thuds.
The Entity drank in the visceral thrill of that internal collapse, feeling the exact moment the organ gave out, its firm beats devolving into a feeble, chaotic flutter. A useless, dying shimmer against Naim's ribs signaling the definitive end.
A burning tightness spread from Naim's lungs to his throat. His vision began to fray at the edges, a creeping dark vignette peppered with bursts of static and red sparks. His face flushed a deep, mottled purple before the color bled away, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray. Saliva pooled at the corner of his open, slack mouth as awful, wet, choked grunts rattled uselessly in his chest.
His movements grew slower, losing their sharp panic to the heavy, syrupy weight of hypoxia. His arms flopped heavily against the floorboards, his body twitching through its final, instinctual attempts to survive as his brain starved. The Entity basked in the fading spike of agony, letting the boy's overwhelming terror wash over him like a warm tide. Human struggle was laughably useless here, and watching it extinguish was sheer perfection.
Then, through the haze of graying sight and roaring blood in his ears, Naim’s slender hand darted up.
The Entity watched with cold amusement, expecting a desperate scratch or a weak, dying punch. Instead, the small, cold hand settled softly against the Entity's cheek.
A delicate, agonizingly tender caress.
The Entity recoiled, ripping his hands and his mouth away from Naim as if the boy’s skin had turned to white-hot iron. The rush of stolen fear instantly curdled into something jarring and sour. Just as the monster pulled away, Naim’s arm fell limply, resting heavy against his own stomach. His eyes stared blankly up at the rotting ceiling beams, his mouth still slightly gaped, his lips a bruised, stagnant blue.
Slowly, the Entity raised a hand to his own cheek, mimicking Naim’s final action. The faint, lingering phantom of that gentle touch pressed into his form like a brand. Something alien and terrifying blossomed somewhere deep in his dark chest …. a strange, hollow ache that made no sense, completely swallowing the residual pleasure of the feed.
The Entity reached out again, his clawed hands landing softly on the boy’s chest with a fragile gentleness he didn't know he possessed. His cheek still stung, throbbing as if that loving touch had been a physical blow.
The cold silence of the abandoned mill pressed down, thick and suffocating, but the Entity barely noticed. Beneath his clawed hands, the boy’s chest remained completely still. Deep within Naim’s chest, the frantic, erratic fluttering of his heart was slowing to a final, agonizing halt. Brain starved, blood stagnant, he was mere minutes, seconds, away from slipping entirely into the void.
The hollow ache inside the Entity expanded, vast and terrifying, swallowing the last lingering warmth of the feed. The monster looked down at Naim’s slack, bruised face, his gaze fixing on the static, pale blue lips. Driven by an alien compulsion he could neither understand nor stop, the Entity leaned down.
He slid a dark hand beneath Naim’s chin, tilting the limp head back to clear the throat. Slotting his mouth over the boy’s cold, motionless lips, the Entity exhaled, not stealing life this time, but forcing his own air down into the boy’s dormant lungs.
Naim’s chest expanded unnaturally under the forced breath. When the Entity pulled back, the air escaped with a soft, hollow sigh. Naim’s eyelids fluttered weakly, but his lips remained a stagnant, bruised blue, his lungs too weak to take over the work.
The Entity’s shadow-slick fingers tightened gently on Naim’s jaw. He tilted the head back further, straining the bruised, delicate neck to open the airway as much as possible against the severe internal swelling. The monster lowered his head and blew into the boy once again, forcing air deep into the silent chest.
This time, the reaction was immediate.
A low, pained groan dragged from the depths of Naim’s throat. His chest gave a violent, involuntary jerk as his brain snapped back to desperate life. His eyes fluttered open into tiny, dazed slits, unseeing and heavy. Air scraped jaggedly past his crushed windpipe; shallow, wet, and raspy, but continuous.
The Entity sat back on his heels, watching the weak, rhythmic movement of the boy's ribs. The strange, searing phantom of Naim's gentle touch still burned against his cheek, echoing in the quiet dark of the mill.
Consciousness returned not as a sudden awakening, but as a slow, agonizing drag from the depths of a dark sea.
Naim’s chest burned. Every involuntary pull of his diaphragm was an agonizing battle, resulting in nothing more than tiny, strangled gasps that whistled through his crushed airway. His vision remained a blur of gray static, his body heavy, useless, and leaden against the dirt-covered floorboards. Strangled breath after strangled breath rasped from his throat as his brain frantically fought for oxygen, slowly assembling the scattered pieces of where, and who, he was.
Then, a familiar touch registered against his skin.
A large, firm hand rested against his side, warm and steady. It glided gently behind him, coming to support his upper back. Naim offered no resistance as his limp body was turned onto its side, moving completely at the mercy of the gesture.
The hand returned, sliding softly beneath his head to tilt it backward. The sharp adjustment opened his obstructed airway just enough for a deeper, fuller rush of air to flood his starved lungs. He choked on the sudden intake, his chest heaving as he took full advantage of the relief. The hand lingered, fingers weaving tenderly through his hair.
Naim felt a wave of profound relief wash over him, so intense he nearly drifted back into unconsciousness. Ryan. The touch was so tender, so protective, it had to be Ryan. Ryan had saved him.
Then, the memory slammed back into his mind with the force of a physical blow.
Ryan wasn't here. Ryan was back in town, unaware. This was the mill. This was the trap.
Naim forced his heavy eyelids open. Through the lingering haze, his vision focused, and his heart violently seized.
Staring down at him was the Entity.
The monster sat unblinking, its wide, dark eyes fixed entirely on Naim with an eerie, unreadable intensity. Across its face, fresh cuts and dark, blooming bruises stood out; remnants of Naim’s desperate, frantic struggle for survival just moments before. This was not Ryan. It was the predator that had just crushed his windpipe and stolen the breath from his mouth.
The second the Entity registered Naim’s conscious gaze upon it, it recoiled slightly, pulling its hand instantly from Naim’s hair as if burned.
It didn't attack. It didn't resume its choking grip. It simply sat there, staring.
Naim’s brain was far too starved of oxygen, far too exhausted to decipher the surreal impossibility of the moment. Unable to move, unable to fight, he simply lay there on his side. He kept his eyes locked onto the monster's, his raw throat working overtime as he continued to suck in ragged, desperate mouthfuls of air to feed his aching lungs. They remained trapped in a silent standstill, both thoroughly baffled by the other.
Suddenly, the heavy silence of the mill was shattered.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the woods outside, accompanied by the muffled, frantic shouting of multiple voices drawing near.
The Entity’s head snapped toward the sound. Condemned by the old, ancient rules that governed its existence, it could not be witnessed.
As the creature began to rise to retreat into the dark, Naim’s oxygen-starved brain acted on pure, delayed instinct. Reaching out for the comfort he so desperately craved, his trembling hand darted forward, his fingers automatically clamping around the fabric of the creature's pant leg to keep "Ryan" from leaving.
The rough, cold material beneath his fingertips instantly shattered the delusion.
Not Ryan.
Naim immediately ripped his hand back, letting out a raw, frustrated grunt that tore through his bruised throat. He squeezed his eyes shut for a fraction of a second, bitterly reiterating the cruel reality to himself. Ryan wasn't here. This was the monster.
The Entity paused, its movement freezing entirely. It tilted its head, its wide eyes darting down to the rumpled fabric of its pant leg where Naim had just held on. Slowly, its gaze shifted back up to meet Naim’s exhausted face.
For a fleeting, impossible second, something subtle shifted in the Entity's unblinking expression. The creature bent down, its movement eerie, jerky, and deeply unnatural. It reached out, its shadow-slick fingers wrapping around Naim's shaky, bruised hand.
Naim could only stare, helpless and dazed, as the Entity brought Naim's cold hand up to its face. Slowly, deliberately, the creature pressed Naim's palm against its own bruised cheek, mimicking the gentle caress from before, and its dark eyes closed for a brief, silent second.
Before Naim’s dazed mind could begin to process the sight, the light from the new party swept across the decaying doorway, and the Entity melted seamlessly into the deep, swallowing shadows of the rafters.
The heavy footsteps thundered closer, paired with loud, slurred voices that Naim recognized instantly. It was the same trio of local bullies who had cornered him and Ryan earlier that evening.
Naim tried to push himself up, but his limbs were leaden, his vision tunneling dangerously. His swelling throat only allowed ragged, whistling hitches of air.
"Oh, what do we have here?"
Heavy boots ground to a halt beside him. One of the boys squatted down to Naim’s eye level, his hand shooting out to fist in Naim's hair violently. He yanked, wrenching Naim's head back to force his eyes upward. The movement pulled painfully on his bruised windpipe, drawing a wet, strangled gasp from Naim's pale lips.
"Don't tell me you're drunk too," another chimed in with a thick, stupid hiccup.
The stench of cheap booze and stale tobacco rolled off them, suffocating in the enclosed space. Naim could only pant, his wide, unfocused eyes pleading silently.
The boy holding his hair scoffed and let go. Naim’s head fell roughly back onto the floorboards with a dull, sickening thud.
"Well, looks like we've got some unfinished business from earlier."
Before the words fully registered, a heavy work boot slammed directly into Naim's solar plexus.
The impact exploded through his torso. Naim's vision went blindingly white as the air was forcibly purged from his lungs. A high-pitched ringing roared in his ears, completely drowning out the ambient noise of the mill. His bruised sternum throbbed with a fresh, agonizing heat, compounding the violent air hunger still starving his brain.
"P-please..." he croaked, the sound barely a rasping whisper through his crushed throat.
His plea fell on deaf ears. A relentless barrage of kicks and wild punches descended upon him. Split skin burst along his cheekbone, sending hot blood tracking into his eye and hairline. Knuckles shattered against his jaw, filling his mouth with the sharp, metallic taste of iron. Each blow tore away more of his fading strength, leaving his body purpled, split, and completely helpless against the floor.
Then, a harsh steel-toed kick drove straight into his side.
Something deep within his chest gave way with a sickening, internal crack. A sharp, white-hot agony pierced his lung, instantly triggering a violent, involuntary convulsion.
Naim gasped, but instead of air, a thick wave of blood welled up from his throat, spilling past his lips and pooling hot onto the splinters beneath his face. He choked, a wet, bubbly rattle echoing in his chest.
On the absolute precipice of passing out, Naim lay completely paralyzed. His lethargic, unfocused gaze remained fixed on the dusty floorboards. He was floating outside his own body now, watching almost detachedly through a darkening blur as his violent attackers were suddenly ripped away, dragged one by one into the swallowing shadows, their horrified screams silenced in the dark.
The metallic tang of fresh blood was heavy on Naim’s tongue, thick and warm as it welled over his pale, split lips. His chest barely moved now; the cracked rib had turned every shallow attempt at breathing into a sharp, white-hot agony. Consciousness flickered like the last dying embers of a fire, the edges of his vision eaten away by a heavy, suffocating darkness.
Then, he felt them. Hands.
Large, firm, and startlingly gentle, the hands settled against his bruised shoulders. For a hazy, fleeting second, Naim’s oxygen-starved brain clung to the same desperate delusion. Ryan... But as the hands carefully rolled his broken body onto its side, the cold, shadow-slick sensation against his skin shattered the lie. It was the Entity again.
The creature’s hands slid beneath Naim's chin, tilting his head back to clear his obstructed throat like he did before. The sudden movement forced a fresh, dark stream of blood to spill from Naim’s mouth, painting the dirty floorboards below. He let out a wet, rattling gasp, his lungs seizing as air scraped past the swelling and internal damage.
The Entity paused, its dark, unblinking eyes tracking the crimson pooling on the wood. Sated on the violent panic of the bullies it had just dismembered, the monster moved to pull away, retreating back into the shadows.
Naim’s chest gave a weak, shuddering heave. Why? The thought screamed in his mind, though all that escaped his lips was a fragile, bloody whisper.
"W-why...?" Naim wheezed, his voice a broken scratch against the silence.
Why save me? Why kill them? Why not just finish me off?
The Entity remained entirely silent. It simply knelt in the darkness, an ancient predator undone by a single, inexplicable moment of tenderness.
As Naim’s eyelids grew impossibly heavy, fluttering shut as he finally succumbed to the overwhelming darkness, he felt a soft, cool pressure against his bruised cheek. The Entity’s clawed hand settled gently against his skin, carefully mirroring the tender caress Naim had given it moments before.
A quiet whisper of cold air brushed over Naim's face, and then the pressure was gone. The Entity dissipated into the night, leaving behind only a lingering, phantom chill.
Naim lay alone in the dark, his shallow, agonized gasps echoing weakly through the rafters. He was completely unaware of the visceral horror surrounding him, the torn limbs, shattered bone, and bloody carnage of his attackers scattered across the floorboards. He only knew the agonizing ache in his chest, the slow, raspy pull of air, and the lingering touch of a monster that had chosen to let him live.
The agonizing cycle dragged Naim under and pulled him back, time losing all meaning in the dark of the mill. Each return to consciousness was marked only by the wet, strangled whistle of his own breathing, a fragile, raspy sound that scraped raw against his crushed airway. Every shallow twitch of his chest flared with white-hot pain from his cracked rib, leaking more warmth into his throat.
Then, cold air shifted around him, and hands settled onto his skin again.
Panic spiked through his starved brain like a lightning bolt. Instinct took over, and Naim bucked wildly off the floorboards, a frantic, desperate attempt to throw off the monster returning to finish what it started.
"Hey, hey—Naim! Shhh, you're alright, try not to move!"
The voice was breaking, choked with genuine, terrified panic.
Naim willed his heavy eyelids open, forcing them into narrow slits. Through the dark vignetting of his vision, the broad shoulders and pale, tear-streaked face of Ryan materialized above him. Ryan’s eyes were wide, wet, and horrified as he tried to stabilize Naim’s thrashing frame.
Naim’s mouth gaped, trying desperately to call out his name, but the effort only triggered a violent spasm. He collapsed flat onto his back, coughing violently as a fresh wave of blood welled up and flooded his airway, blocking the precious little oxygen he was clinging to. He flopped uselessly against the wood, gasping and choking on the fluid.
"Fuck—oh fuck, Naim!" Ryan swore frantically. He grabbed Naim by the shoulder and hip, rolling him back onto his side before raising a heavy hand and pounding firmly on Naim's back to clear the blockage.
Naim grunted and bucked against the floor, a choked cry escaping his bruised lips as the impact vibrated through his shattered rib. The harsh coughing fit eventually cleared enough of the dark blood for a thin, whistling drag of air to reach his lungs.
Panting heavily, Naim forced his eyes open wider, seeking the grounding sight of Ryan’s face. But as his blurred gaze tracked past Ryan's shoulder, his vision focused on something lying just a few feet away in the dust.
A severed head. Its eyes were frozen open in a pale, glassy stare, the mouth contorted into a silent scream.
Naim’s chest seized, his eyes widening. Ryan caught the direction of his horrified stare, snapped his head around, and let out a harsh, shaken curse. He immediately shifted his body, positioning himself to block Naim’s view of the gore.
"Shhh, you're alright Naim," Ryan pleaded, his hands trembling as they gripped Naim's shoulders. "Just focus on your breathing, okay? Everything's alright, I'm right here."
Naim cleared his throat, a wet, rattling sound that brought up another crimson spray onto his split lips. He swallowed hard, forcing his damaged vocal cords to work.
"E-Entity..." he rasped out, his voice barely a breathy whisper. "...killed them."
Ryan’s throat worked as he swallowed hard, a stray tear cutting a line down his dusty cheek. He nodded, his breath hitching. "Yeah mate, I—I figured."
Naim's chest gave a weak, shuddering heave. He forced himself to keep speaking, every word an agonizing hurdle. "Left me... alive."
Ryan turned his head slightly, his wide, terrified eyes taking in the surrounding darkness. The mill floor was a nightmare of torn limbs, shattered bone, and shredded meat that barely resembled human remains. He dragged a shaky, bloody hand down his own mouth, his voice trembling with sheer bewilderment.
"Yeah, he—it... it led me here too," Ryan whispered, turning back to Naim, his voice thick with confusion. "Without attacking me. Just... pulled back into the dark and let me run to you."
Naim’s lungs suddenly spasmed again. A violent, agonizing coughing fit overtook him, his body curling tightly around his shattered chest. The vision at the edges of his sight tunneled rapidly into complete, swallowing blackness.
"Naim! Hey, stay with me!" Ryan was there instantly, his broad palm rubbing soothing circles into Naim's uninjured shoulder, his voice desperate. "Help is coming, alright? I called an ambulance, they're on their way right now. Just hang on, please..."
The frantic pleading faded into a distant, muffled echo. Overwhelmed by the crushing weight in his chest, and sheer exhaustion, Naim’s eyes finally fluttered shut, slipping completely into the painless dark.
The soft, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the cardiac monitor was the only constant in the sterile white room.
Days had bled into one another, leaving Naim in a perpetual haze of exhaustion. His recovery was a steep, agonizing climb: his broken ribs burned with every breath, and a deep, stubborn chest infection had settled in, sending sharp, agonizing tremors through his torso whenever he coughed. Still, the severe swelling in his throat had finally subsided. His windpipe was slowly mending, making breathing less of a desperate struggle and allowing him to speak without tearing his throat apart.
Weak, lethargic, and weighed down by pain medication, Naim spent most of his days drifting between sleep and a half-conscious blur, anchored to the bed by an IV drip and monitor leads.
He lay on his side, his back turned to the heavy hospital door, staring blankly out the window at the twilight sky. Ryan had slipped out a little while ago, escorting Naim's exhausted mother to her car so she could get some sleep before work, promising to hit the cafeteria on his way back to grab them both some food.
When the heavy door glided open with a quiet, almost imperceptible click, Naim’s frame relaxed into the mattress. He closed his eyes, assuming Ryan had returned.
Footsteps approached the bed, unusually soft, light, and deliberate, as if trying not to disturb him. Naim stayed still, content to let his Ryan think he was fast asleep.
Then, a hand settled gently against his cheek.
It was a tender, familiar touch, yet an icy wave instantly washed over Naim's skin. The palm was large and broad like Ryan's, but behind the warmth of the room sat a deep, unnatural chill that made his heart violently spike against his ribs. The cardiac monitor answered immediately, its steady rhythm quickening into a sharp, frantic beep.
Naim froze, keeping his eyes tightly shut, his pulse hammering in his ears.
A single, freezing finger began to trace the contours of his face. It fluttered delicately over his eyelid, dragged down the slope of his nose, and came to a rest against his lower lip. The touch wasn't predatory, it was agonizingly cautious, and completely terrifying.
Before Naim could process the quiet horror, a pair of cool lips pressed against his in a soft, fleeting peck.
Naim’s eyes snapped open in shock.
Standing over him was Ryan. Or what looked, down to the very last detail, like Ryan. It had copied his messy blonde hair and had even meticulously replicated the exact oversized hoodie and dark jeans Ryan had worn to the hospital that morning.
"Sorry," the creature murmured, a sly, impossibly soft smile tugging at its lips. "I was just trying not to wake you up."
The voice was almost identical, soothing and sweet. For a single, dazed second, Naim’s oxygen-starved, medicine-clouded brain wanted to melt into the comfort. But as his eyes flicked around the empty hands and the bare bedside table, reality crashed back. There was no bag. No food. Not a single snack that his Ryan had promised to bring back.
Before Naim could move, the Entity leaned in again, pressing its open mouth against Naim's lips, trying to deepen the kiss, trying to consume the intimacy it had been denied.
Naim willed his weak, aching body to move, pulling his head back against the pillow, chest starting to hitch in panic.
The Entity paused. Its uncanny expression shifted instantly into a mask of forced, exaggerated concern. "What's wrong?"
Naim swallowed hard, his raw, healing throat aching as he shook his head against the mattress. "I-I just want Ryan," he whispered, his voice small, raspy, but clear.
The creature’s demeanor changed sharply. The warmth melted from its stolen face, replaced by a dark, sudden coldness. Its jaw set, and its shadow-slick fingers shot out, clamping firmly around Naim’s chin. Leaning down with sudden, rigid authority, it forced its mouth back toward Naim’s, determined to take what it wanted.
Naim flinched. With every ounce of strength left in his exhausted body, he twisted his head violently to the side, breaking the hold. He turned back, locking his gaze directly into the creature's wide, unblinking eyes.
"Just Ryan," Naim reiterated, his voice steady despite the pain radiating through his chest.
Slowly, Naim lifted a heavy, trembling arm. He reached up and settled his pale palm softly against the Entity's cheek, mirroring the exact gesture from the mill, the touch that had rewritten the monster's reality.
"I only love Ryan," Naim whispered softly into the quiet room, heart pounding in his chest.
A profound, jarring silence fell between them. The Entity stared down at him, the dark pupils of its stolen eyes widening. A storm of raw, human emotion flared behind its gaze, a bitter, tragic mix of profound confusion, rejection, and a deep, bottomless longing. It leaned faintly into the touch against its cheek, utterly paralyzed by the declaration.
Suddenly, the creature's eyes flicked sharply toward the doorway.
Confused by the sudden shift, Naim followed its gaze, chest heaving.
The heavy hospital door swung slowly open. Standing in the threshold was Ryan—the real Ryan, his arms overflowing with a chaotic pile of cafeteria sandwiches, chips, and sodas, looking exhausted but relieved to be back.
Naim snapped his head back around toward the bed.
The space beside him was completely empty. The Entity had vanished back into the thin air, leaving behind only a lingering, phantom draft of ice against Naim's skin, and the rapid, frantic beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor filling the quiet room.
"Hey mate, sorry that took so long, the line was—"
Ryan cut himself off mid-sentence. His eyes snapped straight to the cardiac monitor, wide with instant panic at the erratic, spiking rhythm. Dropping the armful of food onto the bedside table without a second thought, he scrambled over to the edge of the mattress.
"Naim! Hey, hey easy .. easy," Ryan breathed, his voice laced with desperate worry.
Seeing Naim’s chest hitch violently beneath the thin hospital gown as his heart hammered wildly against his bruised ribs, Ryan immediately took action. He leaned over the bed, placing one hand behind Naim’s shoulder to keep him steady, while gently massaging Naim’s heaving chest with his other hand, working in steady circles right against the center of Naim's chest.
"Shhh, take a breath for me, Naim. I'm right here. Easy..." Ryan coaxed softly, adjusting trying his best to ease Naim's struggling heart without aggravating the fractured ribs.
The firm, warm pressure over his sternum slowly began to override the phantom chill left by the Entity. Naim let out a shuddering gasp, his eyes fluttering as the suffocating tension in his chest gradually began to uncoil. The monitor's shrill alarm began its slow, steady descent back into a safe, rhythmic pattern.
"That's it, bring it down," Ryan whispered, leaning in closer. His heart ached at the sight of Naim looking so fragile. Gently removing his hand from Naim’s chest, Ryan leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to Naim’s temple, resting his lips there for a long moment while breathing him in. "You're safe. I've got you."
Naim let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for an eternity, leaning his head back into the soft pillows as relief washed over him. He gave a small, slow nod. "I... I thought I saw someone," Naim lied, his voice a soft, raspy whisper, cracked from his healing throat.
Ryan’s face softened into a look of overwhelming devotion. He shifted closer, sliding one arm carefully beneath Naim's neck to cradle his head, while his other hand came up to cup Naim's jaw.
"I'm so sorry, mate. I shouldn't have left you alone," Ryan murmured, his voice trembling. He leaned down, hovering just an inch away, before bringing his lips gently against Naim's.
It wasn't like the cold, desperate demand of the Entity. This kiss was slow, warm, and reverent. Ryan’s lips moved against Naim’s with painstaking softness, barely pressing, mindful of the bruises lining Naim's face and mouth. He parted slightly to brush a second, tiny kiss against the corner of Naim's split lip, then another to his cheek, grounding Naim completely in the present.
"I'm right here," Ryan whispered against Naim's skin, his thumb lightly stroking Naim’s cheekbone. "Nobody's touching you while I'm in this room. I promise."
Naim closed his eyes, completely surrendering to the comfort. Despite the lingering shadow hovering at the back of his mind, the oppressive horror in the room slowly melted away into the soft hum of the medical equipment.
Ryan finally pulled the heavy plastic chair right up against the edge of the mattress, refusing to let go of Naim's hand even as he dug into his cold cafeteria sandwich. He talked animatedly between bites while Naim lay comfortably on his side, his head resting on his arm as he watched him. Naim listened, thoroughly entertained by whatever rambling story Ryan was spinning about his mother's frantic drive home and the overly dramatic hospital security guard.
A sudden, overwhelming burst of warmth bloomed in Naim's chest. Watching Ryan animatedly tell his story, speaking with his mouth completely full, his broad hands flailing so wildly that he nearly knocked a bottle of Pepsi straight off the bedside table, made Naim's heart ache in the best way possible.
Ryan looked exhausted, dark circles bruised under his eyes, yet he had stubbornly refused to leave Naim's side for more than twenty minutes at a time since the night at the mill. He was always there, the first to pull Naim onto his side whenever violent, agonizing coughing fits threatened to choke him, and the steady anchor waking him gently from the suffocating night terrors that plagued his sleep.
Despite everything Naim had put him through, despite the terrifying danger Naim's reckless choices had dragged them into, Ryan hadn't harbored a single grain of resentment. He had just stayed, fierce and unwavering, always willing to protect him.
"I love you," Naim whispered, the words slipping out, born from a sudden wave of sheer, tender emotion.
Ryan froze. Everything stopped.
A bite of sandwich stayed halfway to his mouth, his wide, blue eyes locked onto Naim's. The room went dead silent. For a long, motionless minute, Ryan just stared at him. Then, setting the food down with trembling fingers, he swallowed hard and looked at Naim, his eyes searching his face with intense vulnerability.
"What—what did you say, Naim?" Ryan asked, his voice cracking violently on the last word.
A genuine smile, his very first real, soft smile since the dreaded nightmare began, spread across Naim’s face. He let out a low, breathy laugh and looked at his boyfriend head-on, his dark eyes glowing with earnest warmth.
"I love you, Ryan," Naim repeated softly, his whispered words carrying absolute certainty into the quiet room. "Thank you for saving me."
Ryan stared at him, tears welling up at the corners of his eyes. Abandoning the chair entirely, he shifted onto the edge of the hospital bed, mindful of the wires and IVs. Slowly, reverently, he reached out and settled his hand against Naim's cheek. It was the exact same cheek the Entity had touched, the same cheek the creature had tried so desperately to claim, but this hand was different. This touch was warm, solid, and rough with familiar calluses.
It was his Ryan.
"I love you so much, Naim," Ryan breathed, his voice thick with emotion.
He leaned down and captured Naim's lips again, deeper this time, but still exquisitely gentle. Ryan’s hand slid down from his cheek, his palm carefully cupping the side of Naim's throat. His thumb stroked with unbelievable tenderness over the dark, mottled purple bruises wrapping around Naim's windpipe, careful not to press, only offering warmth to the damaged skin as he kissed him.
Naim melted into the embrace, his fingers weakly tangling into the fabric of Ryan's oversized hoodie, pulling him as close as his broken body would allow. When Ryan finally pulled back, he didn't go far, he rested his forehead against Naim's, his warm breath fanning across Naim's face.
"No matter what happens," Ryan promised, his voice steady and resolute, "we will make this work. I'm not letting anything take you."
Naim leaned into the touch, closing his eyes as a profound sense of peace settled over him.
They both knew the truth. They knew that the darkness hadn't simply vanished, that a creature born of ancient shadows and stolen faces was still out there, waiting, watching, and bound to them in a terrifyingly complex web of obsession and horror. They would forever be hunted. The world outside this quiet hospital room was dangerous, unpredictable, and scarred by nightmares.
But as Naim opened his eyes and looked at Ryan, feeling the steady, warm pulse of the hand holding him close, and the lingering warmth of his kisses, the fear simply lost its power.
