It’s been a while since she's been in Sterling Point. The quiet sound of the lake is a nice change from the busy city noise of New York. She’s made the walk up the steps leading to Gordon’s cabin a hundred times before, but this time it feels different. She’s nervous, It’s not that she isn’t excited to see everyone, she is. But she didn’t leave things on the best terms with everyone. As she reaches the door she fiddles with her belt loop trying to free her carabiner and the keys that hang from it but before she has the chance the door swings open.
“HEY!” she barely has time to react before she’s being pulled into a hug by Annie.
“Mind letting me breathe?” Annie loosens her grip slightly.
“Sorry” she laughs, “I just missed you”
Ramona laughs and returns the hug.
“I missed you too.”
“Okay so we have so much to talk about,” Annie says while grabbing Ramona’s hand, dragging her up into their shared bedroom.
Ramona has no time to think before Annie pushes Ramona down on her bed and Annie takes a seat across from her on her respective bed.
“So…” Annie sits criss-crossed apple sauce, fiddling her fingers in anticipation. “Omg tell me about New York, did you like it? Was it like how you imagined? Did you see people banging on the fire escapes? Any hot new girls?”
“Jeez Annie, slow down, this isn’t twenty-one questions.”
“What? I’m excited, I want to know what you’ve been up to, we haven't seen each other since Christmas.”
“Okay! Yes I liked it. It was exactly how I imagined.And no, I didn't see people banging. But I did see someone give a blow job, which I’m pretty sure is illegal.”
“Gross.”
“I like saw his thing,” Ramona says with disgust. “No lesbian should have to see that.”
“Ew… well did you see any hot new girls at least?” Annie asks with a playful smirk.
“Like during the blow job? I mean she was alright looking, she wasn’t really my type.”
Annie shakes her head, “Omg shut up. You know what I meant.”
“Yeah there were a lot of pretty girls, but I don’t know… I didn't do anything like that.”
Annie nods in understanding, “Oona hasn’t been seeing anyone either.”
“Okay so? Why would I care about that?”
Ramona tries to act unbothered by the mention of Oona, but her cheeks flush a little at the thought of her. It’s been almost a year since her and Oona broke up and Ramona left for New York. The ache in her heart pains her every single day with how the two of them left things. Not only did she break up with her girlfriend, but she lost her best friend at the same time. She just wished that things could go back to normal, before they ruined the friendship and made everything so messy between them.
“Oh my god your face literally went red at the mention of her. And obviously Oona still likes you, I haven’t seen Miss Flirty Mcflirt flirt with anyone since you left.”
“I don’t care!” Ramona says laying down.
“You totally do! This is fantastic.”
Ramona quickly sits up, “Why is that fantastic?”
“AH! So you admit it!”
“I’m not admitting anything!”
“Yes you totally are!”
“Oh my god, no I’m NOT!” Ramona says, throwing a pillow at Annie.
“Ow!” Annie yells through laughter.
Ramona can’t help but let a little giggle escape.
“I missed you.”
“You already said that.”
“I know, but I really did miss you.”
The two sisters stare lovingly at each other from across the room. Ramona hasn’t known Annie for long, but she’s quickly become one of the people in the world that she loves the most. It’s like she can’t even remember what it was like without a sister. She didn’t have one for most of her life, but now that she has one, she can’t imagine a world without her. And Connor is alright too she thinks, a little annoying but it’s part of his charm.
Annie taps her bed ushering Ramona to come over and she does. She slides into bed next to her sister and rests her head on her shoulder.
“So how are things with Ellis?”
“They’re pretty good, he annoys me on occasion but overall he's really great.” Annie says playing with Ramona’s hair.
“So is it love?”
“I think it is, I mean sometimes people just get you. It doesn’t matter how bad things get, he’s still the person I wanna be with. And I think that’s what I’ve come to see love as, two people who aren’t perfect but choose each other anyways.”
Ramona’s brain goes to the one place she was afraid of, Oona. She thought her time in New York would make her feelings go away but she is starting to come to terms with the fact that they aren’t. That’s why she wasn’t able to get with any girls in New York, regardless of how much Connor had tried. People were nice but no one felt right, and she didn’t feel right when she was with them. Ramona was still in love with Oona and she was terrified that she always would be.
