Work Text:
Kara touches down on the balcony of their penthouse.
A hectic day of Supergirl duties has left her exhausted and seeing Lena is the only thing that could make her day better right now.
She makes sure to brush off any debris still left on her super-suit before stepping into the apartment.
Reaching behind and unclasping her cape, she appreciates the feeling of one less article of clothing. She drapes it over her forearm.
As she's walking to the bedroom, she hears the crinkle of a page turning with her super hearing. She opens the door to Lena sitting on the bed, leaning against the headboard, a blanket draped over her legs and focusing on the book in her hands—just like she predicted.
What Kara didn't expect though, was the black, thick-rimmed glasses rested on her girlfriend's nose.
Kara's eyes widen and her mouth falls open, gaping at Lena. She doesn't notice her cape slipping from her grasp, and falling onto the floor with a thud. Lena looks up from her book at the sound, and a dazed, unmoving Super comes into her sight.
"Kara? Is everything okay?" concern etched into Lena's face.
She closes her book and sets it aside on the bedside table when Kara remains silent.
"Darling?"
That snaps Kara back into reality.
"Huh? Oh! Yes—hi. I'm back."
"You okay?" Lena repeats.
"Oh yeah. It's just…golly. You. Your glasses—I mean! But you too—"
Kara doesn't notice Lena moving towards her as she continues her rambling.
"Kara," Lena whispers, her hands softly gripping onto Kara's biceps.
"Yes?" Kara breathes out.
"You like my glasses that much?" a cheeky grin appears onto Lena's face.
"Pfft—no…it's just new glasses. Nothing special about—"
Lena raises an eyebrow.
Kara lets out a whine.
"Yes."
"It's a new look on you. I like it…a lot," Kara deflates in Lena's arms at the admission, head dropping onto her shoulder as she engulfs Lena into a hug.
They stay in the position for a few minutes, Lena absentmindedly stroking Kara's hair while her face is buried in the crook of Lena's neck.
"I missed you," Kara lifts her head sluggishly to look at Lena.
"I missed you too. Now, let's get you ready for bed." Kara nods, her eyes threatening to shut as fatigue eats away at her.
Lena helps Kara throw her cape and super-suit into the laundry and lays a fresh set of clothes on the edge of the bed for when Kara is done with her shower before climbing back onto bed and picking back up her current read as she waits.
Fifteen minutes later, a slightly more energized Kara emerges from the en suite bathroom with damp hair, and a towel thrown over her shoulder. She starts changing into the clothes Lena laid out for her—Lena's own MIT sweatshirt and a pair of light blue boxers—and Lena pretends her attention on her book isn't wavering.
Kara settles in the spot beside her a second later.
"Hi," Kara says in a way which sounded like relief.
"Hi. Long day?" Lena sets her book aside and reaches to her own face, sliding down her glasses.
She feels a soft grip onto her wrist, Lena's head turns towards Kara in question.
"Keep it on? Just until we go to sleep," Kara pleads. "You look cute in it."
"Okay," Lena smiles. "Tell me about your day?"
They both sink into the bed, pulling the covers over their bodies. Kara starts going on about her day lazily, her eyes shut as she rambles on.
"I just wanted to talk, and he flings me onto the ground," she grumbles. "Like come on," she drags out the 'on'. "He must know that doesn't do anything to me. All he did was destroy city infrastructure." Kara lets out a groan, her eyes still shut.
"I already got warned to not fight in the city just a few days ago so the DEO is gonna—"
A soft, too relaxed exhale from beside her catches her attention. She slowly opens her eyes and sees Lena in deep sleep.
Her glasses were still on, threatening to slide down her nose. Kara reaches over and gingerly takes it off, folds it, and places it atop the beside table.
She observes Lena for a while—the rise and fall of her chest, the tranquil look on her face, and her uniform heartbeat.
Rao, she loves this woman.
Eventually, Kara allows the steady beat of Lena's heart to gently lull her to sleep.
