Familial Obligations

Summary:

The secret to Papa's Pizzeria's success has always been the bond that Roy, Joy, and Papa Louie share as a family. But when Roy realizes that he is essentially the general manager of the pizzeria and the overseer of all of Papa's restaurants after an argument with his elder sister, the siblings slowly come to realize that the mixing of family dynamics with business will not do in order to keep the jewel of Papa's empire alive. But with Papa Louie away on so many adventures and Joy slowly slipping away from the family business to deal with "personal business", the family relations as well as the pizzeria starts to decline. Will Roy and Joy fix the dynamic that brought them success—or will they have to throw it away entirely?

Notes:

Despite what the tag says, this does not take place in the original version of Papa's Pizzeria but the Deluxe version, instead. The story will mainly focus on Roy, Joy, and Papa Louie but I plan to have cameo customers/workers that will appear in each chapter that Roy and Joy (and maybe Papa Louie?) will interact with. Some may gain more prominence (I'm looking at you: Big Pauly, NowTime News team, Moe/Dynamoe, and all of the workers) but we'll see since I'm essentially writing as I go along. Also, the narrator in this story has a tendency to put out "humorous" quips so I'm sorry if that is not your cup of tea, reader.

Cameo Features: Jojo and Vincent

Mentioned: Sasha

Chapter 1: Rank 0: Novice Delivery-Boy/Girl

Chapter Text

The weather in Tastyville was nice and warm—so were the ovens that were currently heating up Jojo’s pizza at Papa’s Pizzeria. Ever since Papa Louie amped up his excursions to snatch more ‘exotic’ toppings and sauces as well as opening up new restaurants around Gurth, the restaurant the delivery-boy-turned-chef—Roy—has worked at for the past several years has seen quite the development ever since the incident. The days of 100 percent manual labor, having all of your ingredients right off the bat, predictable orders, and only worrying about cooking the food were long gone. To upkeep a Papa’s™ establishment in the present day, you had to purchase various gadgets to maintain a smooth workflow, consistently upgrade the uniforms off your back as well as the decorations for the lobby depending on the season, and sometimes perform a “twist” to a customer because Papa Louie swears that it will bring the pizzeria good fortune. Oh, and did I mention that the funding for these tasks come out of your own paycheck? The development of the pizzeria’s work environment was drastic and difficult, but Roy was able to pull it off. But could the current system be built-up any further?

“Yes, I think the pizzeria could benefit from this add-on,” thought Papa Louie as he proof-read the letter that was going to be sent to his family.

Before we talk about this mysterious letter, let’s return to the pizzeria and see what’s transpiring over there. Inside, Roy presented the pizza that was mentioned in the first sentence to its proper consumer. It should be noted that instead of Roy’s usual attire of the Papa’s Pizzeria™ red shirt and cap, he was wearing a beret and a turtleneck that was too itchy for his liking; that odd fashion choice was one of Uncle Louie’s suggested “twists” targeting Jojo so that the restaurant would be more likely to receive the coveted blue ribbon for this week—somehow, Papa was right with his hunch; Jojo was ecstatic when gazing—but not eating—at the pizza so we can assume that wearing a possibly-flammable turtleneck is up to current safety standards. After witnessing Jojo placing the blue ribbon in front of the counter and leaving the premises, Roy sprinted to the door so he could change the door’s sign from ‘open’ to ‘closed’ but before he could flip the sign, he spotted Vincent the mailman walking up towards him. Roy opened the door just enough so he could pull out his arm and gesture for Vincent to come inside; the latter followed the command by entering the pizzeria and tipping his hat to Roy.

“Oh, thank goodness you’re here!” exclaimed Roy. “Do you have the street-wear that I ordered a few weeks ago? This outfit is killing me and I need to change into something before I peel off my skin from scratching too hard!”

“Sorry, buddy,” mumbled Vincent, “all I have is an envelope so I don’t think it can hold clothes. Besides, you’re not receiving a new outfit anytime soon. I don’t know why youngsters like you and my darling Sasha always want to do their grocery-shopping online instead of doing it the old-fashioned way by going to a proper store—most 'shops' online are scams, ‘ya know!”

“I-I know,” stammered Roy before Vincent could veer off-topic; that was a habit he developed after spending too much time talking to the elderly whenever he visited Prune Creek Retirement Home. “What envelope could possibly motivate you to come here this late?”

“Normally, I would wait until tomorrow morning to deliver this to you since I am a morning person—well, at least that’s what my job forces me to be, anyway. But this delivery is different since the handwriting on the address section appears to belong to the great Papa Louie!”

Roy’s expression went from confused to shocked as he recognized that the envelope that was now being directed towards him had the handwriting used in the letters he received from his uncle. After grabbing the envelope from Vincent’s hand and waving him goodbye before he left the building, Roy finally completed his original task and locked the doors. Whilst rushing towards the counter he ripped the top of the envelope and tossed the casing that held the piece of paper containing Papa’s message to the previously litterless floor. The moment he went behind the counter he started to read this text:

Roy:

Before I start my adventure to Scrapple Hill, I would like to make a very important request regarding the current operation of my restaurants. You may know that for the last two restaurants that we opened together, it was decided to invest in food trucks for those locations as a way to earn more tips. Since the addition of the food trucks have worked splendidly for them, why not try them out with our older, more popular restaurants? For the Pizzeria and the Freezeria, the food truck should be implemented the next time there is a restock on toppings. (if I remember correctly it should be black olives for you) If my plan goes well we can do the same to the Mocharia as well as the other restaurants when we are done with those renovations!

Papa Louie

When Roy realized what he had just read, he felt the worst example of déjà vu that could possibly be presented to him—he felt like he was back on that fateful day when Papa made him the new head-chef of Papa’s Pizzeria via a letter! How could he even handle a food truck with all of the work he has on his plate right—

“Dude, you know how our uncle feels about trash on the floor, not cool,” uttered a voice.

Roy looked up and saw the person that uttered the phrase: his older sister, Joy. She must have entered the building via her spare keys, it would be pretty irresponsible to tackle a delivery shift without…

Wait a minute! That’s how Roy would solve the problem that was thrust upon him! Joy would run the food truck! His revelation gave him a boost of energy and he ran towards Joy with the letter in his hand.

“Oh, thank you for entering now, Joy! Uncle Louie just sent me a letter and I just don’t know what to do! He wants to… well… here! Read this!” Roy cried out whilst bringing up the letter in front of his face.

After Joy took the letter and started to scan its contents, Roy thought about how lucky he was to have Joy as his sister. When Papa was adding the first new mandates for the pizzeria, he thought that it was going to be impossible for him to handle all of the new changes and thought that he was going to doom the pizzeria into bankruptcy—but then Joy came back from Sakura Bay! With her acting as the main delivery-girl as well as helping upkeep the place when needed, the restaurant was able to flourish in Tastyville!

“Sorry for what I said earlier,” Roy awkwardly giggled. “I got that message from Vincent just before you came in. I didn’t know how the pizzeria could handle what Uncle Louie was saying so I was a bit…frazzled before I remembered about you. After we get some sleep we can—”

“No, Roy.”
