Work Text:
On a normal morning, Caesar Zeppeli would wake up to light streaming through his bedroom window, and having it shine onto his face. But not this morning. Instead, he woke up surrounded by clouds, and a clear blue sky above him. On top of that, the ground below him was entirely covered by a thin layer of water.
Caesar sat up, and a pair of pearly gates sat in front of him. Slowly, from above, a huge, heavenly ball of light descended to just above where Caesar was sitting.
“Greetings, young Caesar.” the light said.
This couldn’t have been happening. It was straight up impossible. The night before, he had just been chatting with JoJo and then was talking about some important stuff and JoJo was just sleeping over, and then the next morning he was…
Wait.
Caesar realised what was happening.
The night before, he had confessed to Joseph that he had a crush on him, and JoJo returned the feelings back, so they kissed and JoJo slept over in Caesar’s room; sharing a bed of course, and now Caesar was basically being approached by God, right after he had just committed what was known by him to be a huge sin in his catholic culture. What was gonna happen to him? Was God going to punish him for all eternity for being a homosexual and kissing another man - let alone sleeping with said man? Caesar’s mind began to race, and before he knew it, he was kneeling and praying, tears in his eyes.
“O father! Please grant me your forgiveness! I am sorry for the sins I have committed, and-“
“Enough.”
Caesar went quiet and looked up to the light; it was weird how he could look at something so bright without it hurting his eyes, it must have been heavenly magic or whatever.
“Caesar, I have not brought you here to punish you for having feelings towards Joseph, and I’m not expecting you to suddenly lose those feelings after I’m finished. After all, I was the one who made you this way, wasn’t I?”
This was unexpected. For Caesar’s whole life he had been taught that someone loving the same gender was one of the biggest crimes out there, and now, here he was being told by the one person he was worshipping since childhood that all of that was wrong, and that he was okay to like JoJo, and for JoJo to like him back.
“I – I suppose…”
“Now, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Caesar, do you know what fan – fiction is?”
“I… uh… no, I don’t think I’ve heard of it.”
“Well, essentially, it’s when someone, who is a fan of a certain series writes or draws or creates their own little story that occurs with the same characters or ideas, but the story doesn’t actually happen in the series. This is usually paired with headcanons, which are little theories the fan has about certain characters or things. Is this making sense?”
“Y-yeah…?”
Caesar was so confused. First, he meets up with God, GOD. You know, the deity that managed to create pretty much everything, which spawned humans to create these huge cults and religions around him and have very strong morals and ideas associated with him. That guy. And then, he’s now disagreeing with some of those morals that the people made and is currently explaining some weird unrelated thing called fan – fiction to him?? What kind of a fever dream was this???
“Now, these headcanons are often about things like a character liking a certain series or food, or, in some cases, people often headcanon character’s sexuality and gender. For example, if there’s a character that appears to act a certain way that makes them seem attracted to a character that they’re not canonically attracted to, which mainly includes headcanoning certain characters as… gay.”
“Oh… I see…”
“Now, even though I kinda created the universe and everything, I still don’t know everything about everyone, and so, after looking down on humans often, I sometimes… write fanfics about people. Real people. And I sometimes make little headcanons about their sexuality and gender, and y’know, because I’m God, those headcanons sometimes come true.”
“Oh!”
“And I headcanoned that you had a crush on Joseph, from the way you were acting around him, and from other sufficient evidence, and… well… yeah.”
Caesar sat in shock. He couldn’t believe that the deity that had caused people to create ideals and morals around why homosexuality was considered a sin, and from which those people had gone as far as to sentence gay people to death, was now telling him that the reason he was now committing such a “sin” was because he had come up with a little fan story about him.
“I… I don’t know what to say…”
“Caesar, I understand that you have been catholic for some time now, and that you have been raised along the lines of homosexuality being a sin. I personally don’t agree with that side of Christianity and Catholicism, as I am pansexual and aroace myself. Rest assured, my next meeting is with the pope and a lot of the local priests near your area, and I’m going to give them a stern talking – to. Now, I’m going to send you back, and I want you to go down there and make Joseph the happiest man alive. Good luck, Caesar…”
Everything faded to white.
---
Caesar’s eyes slowly opened, and he awakened to that old familiar light streaming through his window. He was in his own bed, on Air Supplena Island, and…
He felt something warm behind him. Caesar rolled over to see a sleeping Joseph in bed next to him, snoring away quietly. Was his whole meeting with God just a dream? Even so, was the stuff he was saying true? About how homosexuality was okay and that he was happy for Caesar and Joseph being together?
Caesar moved over to JoJo and put his arms around him in an embrace. Everything about him seemed to fill Caesar with a kind of joy and whimsy that could not exactly be put into words. All he knew for sure was that Joseph was someone that he would be delighted to be with for as long as he could, with or without God’s support.
