Mechanisms Movie Night!

Summary:

The comforting whir of the engines drowned out everything else as Nastya rested against them, caring very little for the superficial burns on her skin. They'd heal anyway. They always did, thanks to the quicksilver running through her veins. When she was with Aurora, she felt as if everything else could simply away, and she could--

Jonny's voice rang out from above. "MOVIE NIGHT!"

So much for peace, quiet, and being romantic.

AKA: The Mechanisms have a movie night, and violence obviously ensues.

Notes:

this is just a fun practice for how i want to write the Mechanisms. critiques are welcome in this fic specifically.

Work Text:

The comforting whir of the engines drowned out everything else as Nastya rested against them, caring very little for the superficial burns on her skin. They'd heal anyway. They always did, thanks to the quicksilver running through her veins. When she was with Aurora, she felt as if everything else could simply away, and she could--

Jonny's voice rang out from above. "MOVIE NIGHT!"

So much for peace, quiet, and being romantic.

After a kiss goodbye, Nastya made her painstakingly slow way up to the main deck of the ship and gave the "captain" a look that could strip paint, and probably has. Jonny merely grinned.

The rest of the crew was gathered there in the common area, which has always been in fashionable disarray. Ashes and Tim were rigging something incendiary while Raphaella barked explosion-preventing orders at them; Marius was kneeling under the television (when did they get one of those?), fixing something that Nastya would likely need to un-fix later; Ivy was reading as always, though the "Necromancy for Dummies" book was new; the Toy Soldier was standing at attention, awaiting orders; Brian was fiddling with the remote (whether to fix or break it was a coin a flip); and several octokittens were attempting to bother everyone and being repeatedly shooed away.

"What is this about, Jonny?" Nastya demanded, hand already drifting towards the inside of her coat where her hammerspace held a perfectly reasonable number of spanners that she absolutely did not intend to hit the first mate with.

"Like I said," Jonny drawled, failing to spin his revolver on a finger, "movie night."

The Toy Soldier piped up from its post. "We have yet to decide on a motion picture to watch! I suggest a historical fiction!"

Raphaella briefly turned away from the potentially very explosive project for just a moment, wings knocking the remote out of Brian's hands. "A historical fiction of what?"

"Perhaps something like... Titanic!" The crew collectively raised their eyebrows. "Or a good movie about war!" The crew relaxed. That was more like it. "Though, I do admit, many of them are terribly inaccurate."

"That's why it's fiction, Toy," Marius called from beneath the TV. Raphaella turned back towards Tim and Ashes, who somehow managed to make their project spark dangerously. Tim, completely ignoring the hazard, and completely unprompted, gave his opinion.

"I agree. Nothing about war. We'd just be complaining about how bad it is. I vote for something with pyrotechnics."

"The pyrotechnics are right here," Ashes replied, cigarette dangling from their fingers very close to the now-smoking device. Raphaella gave up on giving orders and instead swooped in to prevent an explosion, because none of them feel like regenerating from that today.

"What about a drama? Something with stakes?" Brian offered. He was ignored completely, because Nastya had just smugly suggested a romance, and was watching Jonny groan as dramatically as he possibly could.

"Nothing based on a book," Ivy muttered, turning a page. "They always get everything wrong."

There was quite a lot of fighting over the movie, and several of them were shot more than once. At some point, the Toy Soldier was ordered to "shut up," and it did so by marching off without a word and returning with five buckets of popcorn that definitely were not in the galley before. Two of these buckets were soon strewn about the common room as the crew fought, but the Toy Soldier and Drumbot Brian had taken to protecting the other three with their immortal lives, because popcorn is important to the movie night tradition! When the crew was finally settled back down, scattered around three lumpy couches, the rescued buckets were distributed out to the crew.

Raphaella, sat with Marius and Ivy, was sitting on the back of the couch due to her wings and also a draconic urge to hoard the popcorn. Ashes was draped across one of the other couches, the Toy soldier sitting stiffly at their feet while Tim, at the other end, sat on the arm of the couch. Brian was stuck between Jonny, sitting sideways with his knees hooked over the arm of the couch, and Nastya, who was on the side of the couch closest to the wall so that she could trash-talk the movie with her wife. Somehow, it was in fact Brian who had ended up with the remote again, and after several failed attempts at picking a movie without anyone killing anyone else, he settled on a Studio Ghibli movie, which he needed help with because they had to pirate it and he simply could not do that. Ashes happened to be the best at piracy, and decided to introduce the rest of the crew to the Earth classic that was Spirited Away. Thankfully, nobody was shot over this decision.
