Work Text:
As is normal after heats, Buck gets pregnant. This is the order of life. An omega has a heat, they are most likely pregnant by the end of it if no other precautions have been taken. They had discussed enlarging their family before his heat, deciding to leave it up to fate as to if it happens now or later. Their finances are mostly in order and Chris has been begging for a baby sister for years; they’ve tried to explain that it’s not a guarantee that they’d have a girl but Chris is convinced if they have a baby, it’ll be a girl.
He talks about his new sister a lot. Here’s five times he talks about the baby over the course of a school year.
~~~~~~~~
1. His friends when he finds out.He’s ecstatic, like he brings it up every five minutes, he’s that excited. His friends give him some shit but even their heart isn’t fully in it. He just found out yesterday about the new baby, of course he’s excited. They somehow manage to talk about other stuff than just the new baby that day. And go back to a normal amount of Chris gushing about his cool parents while his friends nod along to the fifth time they’ve heard how his dad and papa scaled a building in the big earthquakes. Afterall, Chris listens when they talk about their parents and interests, why shouldn’t they listen to him?
2. His teacher.
The next day at school, he walks up to his teacher's desk, warning Ms. Flores that ‘Even though she’s supposed to wait until June to come out, she might come out in May and he’ll have to miss some school.” She wasn’t worried. She thinks it’s cute how excited Chris is and how he doesn’t realize how much work a baby is.
3. His art teacher
Christmas time is a joyous time for students, holiday activities line the schedule everyday until their winter break.
“Miss teacher!” He yells in artclass one day.
“Yes Chris?” “Can I get another paper pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?????????? I have to make a card for my sister too.”
“Oh, I didn’t know you had a sister.” She says, grabbing another sheet for him.
“She’s not born yet. But I think she should have a card, we’re making cards for important people and she’s really important.”
“I believe it.” She says nodding along, a little confused but after working with kids for over 10 years, she’s learned to live with being confused.
4. His friends again.
He talks about how he talks to Buck’s bump so “She knows my voice when she comes out. We’ve started reading the pigeon books so she’ll have good taste when she grows up.”
His friends laugh, suggesting better books than the pigeon. “Elephant and Piggie is the best.” “No! Dr. Suess is the best!!!!!!!!” “Wasn’t he kind of racist?”
“Yeah but like, everyone was back then. He fixed it, kinda.”
“The day the crayons quit is pretty good.”
“It gets old after a while though.”
“Every book gets old after a while.”
“Tell that to Dad getting mad at the ‘If you give a mouse a cookie’ books. He gets so heated.”
“Why?”
“Don’t get me started.”
5. Fellow firefighters at an event.
The annual firefighter picnic is a great way to relax and build camaraderie with other firestations. It’s a family friendly event with cakes, balloons, and a smattering of yard games to entertain firefighter and family alike. Johnson from C shift makes small talk with Chris, having seen him at the station a couple times over the years. “The baby’s already waking up Buck in the middle of the night, I told him he should wake me up too so we can both practice getting up to help her. He said I needed sleep, which is dumb because he needs too!”
Some B shift firefighter chuckles a little at the indignant remark. “Ya know? Kid’s got a point.”
“THANK YOU.” Chris says, happy that FINALLY someone sees his point.”
The firefighters give the couple some shit the next time they cross paths. “Hey, heard your baby’s waking you up at night.”
“Yeah, it’s kind of a problem.” Buck replies, not thinking too hard about how they know this.
“Heard your shadow wants to join you for late night munchies.”
“Look, we’ve tried to explain that just because I’M up doesn’t mean he needs to be. Besides, late night munchies are one of the few times I’m completely alone these days. How do you all know this?”
B shift is still laughing. “Little birdie.”
Eddie, far less amused. “Does this birdie use crutches?” They just shrug. “I’m gonna kill him.”
“Don’t you dare! He’s a kid!”
“Who’s sharing our personal life with everyone.”
“At least it’s our crew.”
“I mean yes? But like- No.”
Buck finds this funny enough that leaves a smile on his face all day.
+ 1 He gets to show off his sister.
Lindsay Isabel Diaz makes her grand debut May 29. He shows off pictures at school a few days later. He can only show photos because, "She can’t be around too many people right now. Everyone has germs, even you. So we have to be careful.”
“We can be careful!” Lindsay yells, knocking over her cup of milk in the process. She just stares at it as per point is invalidated drop by drop.
“I’mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.” She pauses, still trying to process what happened. Christopher is already back at the table with a handful of napkins. He throws them on the table, nods, “Good enough.” Lindsay snaps out of it and wipes up the spill while Derek grabs more napkins.
“You were saying????????????”
“Shut up. Lindsay can’t even be outside. At least I’m outside.”
“You’re inside a building.”
“Yeah but, my parents aren’t here.”
One of the teachers walks by, having half heard the conversation and knowing Chris, she draws the conclusion, “Is she really trying to argue she’s better than a baby?”
