Dry Clean Only

Summary:

A boy buys his ever first suit!! And he also finally comes to terms with his parents not accepting him.

(Based off a personal story I've recently had)

Work Text:

He gulped looking at the rather small array of men's suit pants. Almost nothing there fit him. Everything was either a medium, large, or extra large. He would only fit in a small. In women's sizing he'd be a medium, or maybe even a large, but now that he's a boy, the only size that would maybe fit him were a small.

He sighed and opted for a medium, he knew how to sew, he could tailor it to be his size. Thankfully there was a small for the jackets and for a white button up to complete the outfit he would idly dream about wearing. It didn't matter the occasion, a wedding, funeral, or just buying groceries, he would wear a lovely suit and have his parents call him their son.

He went to pay for the clothes, thankfully it was at a thrift store, so it was pretty cheap. Just under 30 dollars. He's always saved his money, mostly for bathing products that his parents would never buy for him, but he deserved to splurge on something he would have in long-term. His haul would definitely get lots of love and use, private or not.

Waiting for the bus he couldn't contain his excitement, wearing it along with new cologne he purchased beforehand. He told the cashier it was for his dad to avoid amy weird glances. There was almost nobody in line and the cashier was probably clocked out herself, but he couldn't stop the nervousness that paralyzed him, even after nearly an entire year of using exclusively men's products.

He shoved the paper bag into his backpack, he couldn't risk any of his family discovering his shopping history. The hoodie he wore made him dizzy with heat. He got it from cleaning out his grandparents house after they both passed. He couldn't remember the last time he had actually been clothes shopping, school uniform and event stiff didn't count. Actual everyday personal clothes.

But he couldn't bear being forced to go to the woman section again by his parents and probably his sister. The thought alone made him want to scream and rip out all his short hair he chopped off months ago. His dad cleaned it up and his parents forbid him from ever cutting it again. He nearly had a bowl cut at this point.

He got on the bus as soon as it came and went to his home. He checked for anybody home, no one yet, except his sister who was in the bathroom, and rushed straight to his room to try it on. The button up and jacket fit him just right! A little tight at the sleeves albeit, but it looked amazing on him. The jacket was fine too, slightly loose at the waist and maybe too long sleeves, but nothing too major for tailoring. The pants were fine-ish at the waist, there was lots of extra fabric at the sides of the legs and too long at the bottom, but that was to be expected.

Just tighten up the legs and trim the bottom and it'll look fantastic. And of course wash it all as hygiene of thrift store clothes can, and under any circumstances, never be trusted. For now he put it in a small box in his closet that his parents wouldn't think twice about checking. He could wash it tomorrow. When he did go to wash the jacket, it said "Dry Clean Only", but he couldn't go to the dry cleaners, his family had never stepped foot in a dry cleaner before, it'll be fine.

After he washed his suit, along with other stuff to not seem suspicious, it seemed to be just fine. He sighed from relief and hid it once again. That night before he went to sleep he watched video after video of tailoring for the best one.

He wished and prayed day and night that maybe someday, by some miracle, his parents would accept their son and maybe even go with him the next time he ever goes suit shopping.

But he knew it was extremely unlikely. They would probably go the rest of their lives without knowing they even have a son. And he just needed to make peace with it.
