Chapter Text

Seattle, Washington
7:15 AM

The alarm clock buzzed, a harsh, grating sound that made Jay instinctively pull the duvet over his head. He hated mornings. He hated the loud, chaotic energy of the high school hallways he was about to face even more.

Before he could hit snooze for the third time, a heavy weight launched itself onto his chest.

"Oof," Jay groaned, the air knocked out of his lungs.

A wet nose aggressively nudged his cheek, followed by a frantic, sloppy lick right across his nose. Jay finally pulled the blanket down, narrowing his sharp eyes. Staring back at him was Sonic, a four-month-old Golden Retriever puppy with paws too big for his body and a tail thumping against the mattress like a drumbeat.

"Sonic, off," Jay muttered, though his voice lacked its usual icy bite.

The puppy barked—a bright, happy yip—and scrambled over Jay's legs, instantly tangling himself in the bedsheets. Jay sighed, the perpetual scowl on his face softening just a fraction. He sat up, gently untangling the golden furball. Anyone at school would be shocked to see the careful, almost tender way Jay brushed the fur out of Sonic's eyes. To the rest of the world, Jay was the quiet, unapproachable kid in the back row who wore too much black, had a resting glare that could cut glass, and kept his answers strictly to one syllable.

"Alright, alright, I'm up," Jay whispered, scratching the puppy behind the ears. Sonic leaned into the touch, letting out a contented huff. "You're lucky you're cute. Let's go get your food."

Downstairs, Jay's phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. A text from one of his classmates: You coming to first period today or sleeping in the parking lot again?

Jay read it, his expression flattening back into its usual indifference, and tossed the phone face-down without replying. He didn't have the social battery for any of his friends' teasing right now. Instead, he sat cross-legged on the cold linoleum floor, watching Sonic enthusiastically devour his kibble.

"Just you and me today, bud," Jay murmured, resting his chin on his hand. Sonic paused his chewing just long enough to look up, wag his tail, and go back to his bowl. For Jay, that was enough.

Brisbane, Australia
10:30 PM

Half a world away, the evening air was warm and sticky. Jake lay on his stomach on the rug of his bedroom floor, a physics textbook open in front of him. He was currently failing to pay any attention to it.

"Come on, just a little closer," Jake coaxed, holding out a small, feathered toy attached to a stick.

From the top shelf of Jake's bookcase, two glowing yellow eyes stared down in absolute disdain. Shadow, an entirely jet-black domestic shorthair, sat perfectly still, blending into the shadows so well he looked like a piece of the night sky had broken off and settled in Jake's room.

"Shadow, mate, you've been up there for two hours," Jake laughed, his voice loud, bright, and completely untethered.

The bedroom door creaked open, and Jake's younger brother poked his head in. "Hey, Mom wants to know if you want the leftover—"

Hssssss.

The sound was sharp and immediate. Shadow had instantly flattened his ears, a low, menacing growl vibrating in his throat as he glared at the intruder in the doorway.

Jake's brother rolled his eyes, taking a step back. "I swear that cat is possessed, Jake. He hates literally everyone."

"He doesn't hate you! He's just... misunderstood," Jake defended, flashing his brother a massive, sunny smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "Just leave the plate on the counter, I'll grab it in a sec."

"Whatever. Freak cat," his brother muttered, shutting the door.

The moment the door clicked shut, the tension in the room vanished. Shadow stood up, stretched his front legs elegantly, and hopped down from the bookcase in one fluid, silent motion. He padded across the carpet, completely ignoring the feathered toy Jake was still holding. Instead, the cat walked right up to Jake's face and aggressively headbutted his cheek.

"There he is," Jake beamed, immediately dropping the toy to scoop the cat into his arms.

Shadow didn't hiss. He didn't scratch. Instead, he melted against Jake's chest, closing his eyes as a rumbling, engine-like purr vibrated through his small body. Jake rolled onto his back, holding the black cat up to the ceiling before settling him on his stomach. He buried his face in Shadow's soft fur.

Jake was the guy everyone knew at school—the captain of the soccer team, the one who remembered everyone's birthday, the guy who couldn't walk down a hallway without high-fiving three different people. He had endless energy for the world. But when he came home, drained from constantly being "on," this was his sanctuary.

"You're a softie, you know that?" Jake whispered, scratching under Shadow's chin. "You act all tough, but you're just a big baby."

Shadow let out a tiny, soft mrrow of agreement, kneading his paws against Jake's hoodie. They were opposites in every conceivable way, but they made perfect sense to each other.

Somewhere across the ocean, a boy with a scowl was walking a golden retriever puppy. And right here, a boy with a bright smile was being held hostage by a grumpy black cat. They were entirely unaware of each other's existence, living under different skies, completely anchored by the best friends resting in their arms.
