Chapter Text
She sits back in the chair and reluctantly holds her arm out while someone in a white coat busily gathers items from around the room. She’s annoyed, this was the second time this week! (At least thats what he had said) She didn't like how much they had taken earlier, but if she complained, there would surely be punishment.
Dr. Take, as she had begun to call the man who normally took her blood, came to her with his supplies yet again. Honestly there was probably a better word she could use for him, but she didn’t know it. She just knew there was one.
It wasn’t really her fault, she thought as a needle was slipped up her arm, that she didn’t know. They had never really told her how words worked and barely ever spoke around her. When they did they never explained any words and ridiculed her for having questions. She had learned a long time ago to stop asking.
At least they had let her learn! Even though she had finished it a while ago, which left her in a rather boring position. Obviously there was more to learn, but no one would teach her! Maybe they couldn’t, maybe they didn’t know how. That was what she had decided on previously.
It must be very hard to teach someone, maybe even what they knew was un-teachable! What the reason may be she didn’t know. Was unteachable a word? Surely it had to be right? If not than it was anyway because someone had to have come up with all the words in the first place.
The needle was removed and she found herself grateful, hopefully this meant she was done for the day. The Doctor led her back to her room and closed the door behind her, leaving her alone. She found herself feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and sat on the bed. Maybe she should sleep.
When she woke up she ate the food that had been left on the table. After that she picked up the pencil and paper, beginning to draw. A while ago she had managed to grab a pencil and doodle on some paper. The doctors had talked and eventually decided to let her have some for herself. Dr. Talk had said something about “Don’t want her to become insane” which she was pretty sure was good because it meant she got paper and pencils!
Really she didn’t know what insane meant, but being not insane was clearly a good thing for her.
First she drew herself, at least what she thought she looked like. It was a plain drawing as all she had was a single graphite pencil, but pretty good. She drew a face, one like any other doctor in the place, though she tried to make it look like the reflection of herself she had seen once off a metal tray. Don’t worry she paid enough attention to make sure to shade in the spots on her arms and legs.
Once the drawing was complete she started on one of Dr. Assist, the one who normally helped Dr, Take. Then she drew Dr. Take, Dr. Talk, Dr. Give, Watch, Dr. Examine, and Dr. Get, the new doctor whose job she was pretty sure was getting supplies and bringing them to whoever he was with. He also brought her food and took her to the bathroom when she needed it. He was one of her favorites, even if he was new.
Later, when the clock reached the top, she ate then Dr. Give came in and took her to his room. She was given a cup of water and a cup of pills. “Drink.” He said, like he did every time. She did, disobeying always ended poorly. Dr. Give then passed her to Watch, saying as he always did, “Make sure to watch her carefully, let me know if you see any unusual behavior.”
Watch nodded and they were on their way. She was then in the outside, a grassy area where she was free to run, jump, yell, and get dirty. Dr. Talk had said it was also important to do THESE things to not “go insane”, so obviously the threat of insane was her favorite thing!
Today she ran and ran the hopped and skipped until her legs wouldn’t let her anymore. At that point she flopped on the grass and stared up at the blue sky, watching the white blobs above float by. She knew those colors, along with a few others. She laid there until Watch called her to “come inside!” She had listened, obviously. She had learned long ago not to argue.
She ate more, then talked to Dr. Talk. Then she ate more, then she went to bed.
In the morning she rested, staying in bed. Her body ached from how much she had done yesterday, particularly the new spot on her arm from where the needle had been the past couple times. She ate, she drew, she ate, she folded paper, she ate, she watched the circle, she ate, and she slept.
The next day was the same, but the one after Dr. Take did what he did. Today he used her right arm instead of her left. She did her day then slept once more.
The lights were dark when she woke again, which was unusual with what Dr. Give gave her each night along with her last meal of the day. What was more unusual was the voice.
“Hey, my name’s Skizz. I came with Impulse to help you. Come on!”
