The Grim Reaper And A Worthless Dream

Summary:

The dying girl on the bed slowly fluttered her eyes open. Her blurred vision locked onto the dark figure standing over her. She didn't scream. She didn't even look surprised. Her voice, when she spoke, was barely a raspy whisper.

"Are you... the grim reaper?" the sickly Homura asked, a faint, melancholic smile touching her lips. "Am I... going to die?"

...

The Akuma stepped forward, her dark heels clicking softly against the linoleum floor. Her amethyst eyes, usually cold and detached, softened with an agonizing weight as she gazed down at her past self. She doesn't know what to feel seeing herself.

"No," the future Homura replied, her tone a stark mix of formal distance and casual intimacy.

Notes:

Greetings, ahh, yes. It's been way too long since I've last posted here at Ao3, to be honest, I missed the feeling of stressing out with a writer's block, heh.

Well, this is basically not a long chaptered fanfic, just a one shot (for now). And I know it's disappointing to know that, but I'll be sure to make a really long lasting one... One that could create a masquerade like an Opera? Heh, that's exaggerating but I do plan to make it someday. It's a promise. And I keep my promises.

Anyways, I can't keep you holding now, no? So please relax, sit or lay down somewhere comfortable as you prepare to read this short story called: "The Grim Reaper And A Worthless Dream."

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor sliced through the heavy silence of the hospital room.

On the bed, a frail girl lay perfectly still, a nasal cannula delivering a quiet hiss of oxygen to her fading lungs. Her skin was a translucent, sickly pale, and her long dark hair sat limp against the stark white pillows.

This was Homura Akemi—the fragile, sickly version of herself from a past timeline she had long since abandoned. A girl whose heart was structurally weak, whose life was measured in brief, labored breaths, and who had not yet met a single friend in this city.

Standing at the foot of the bed, shrouded in the dim, oppressive shadows of the room, was another Homura.

But this version did not belong to a sterile hospital room, nor did she belong to human reality anymore. She wore a dress as dark as the void, her long black wings tucked loosely behind her back. She was Akuma Homura—the demon who had torn down the laws of the universe out of pure, unadulterated obsession.

"I am not death. Though, in a way, I am what comes after it. I am you, 'Homura'. Or rather, a version of you from a future that has broken its own bounds."

The frail girl blinked slowly, processing the words through a haze of physical exhaustion. She looked at the intricate, dark dress, the otherworldly aura, and the deep sadness etched into the stranger's eyes.

"Me...?" the sick Homura murmured, coughing lightly into her oxygen mask. "But you look so strong. You look... like you can breathe without hurting. Did we get better? Did our heart finally heal?"

...

A sharp, phantom pain pierced the Devil's chest. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, swallowing the bitter irony of the question.

[ This is useless... It is a waste of time to be speaking with this worthless version of herself... ]

"We stopped hurting in the way you mean," the future Homura said, pulling up a cold metal chair to sit beside the bed. She crossed her legs elegantly, leaning closer. "The physical weakness... the hospital stays... all of that becomes a distant memory. You will gain power beyond your wildest imagination. You will bend time itself to your whim. You will become strong enough to defy gods."

[ She knows that this is useless... She hated this worthless self more than anything... Then... Why is her body moving on it's own? ]

The sick girl’s eyes widened slightly, a fragile spark of hope igniting in her chest. "Then... we saved everyone? We managed to protect the people we care about?"

...

The silence that followed was suffocating. The heart monitor continued its uncaring beep... beep... beep...

Future Homura reached out, her black-gloved fingers hovering just inches above the frail girl's pale hand. She wanted to hold it, to offer comfort, but she knew her touch was too cold, too heavy for someone so delicate.

[ Stop... ]

"We tried," the Devil whispered, her formal composure cracking just a fraction, letting the profound, aching sadness bleed through. "We tried over and over again. We rewrote history a hundred times. We watched the world burn, we watched her die more times than a human soul is built to endure. And in the end... I saved her. I tore her away from a fate of eternal isolation."

The frail girl listened intently, her brow furrowing slightly in confusion. She had no classmates yet. She had no friends. The name and identity of this 'her' remained a complete mystery to her sheltered, lonely mind. Yet, as she looked at the profound reverence and agony in her future self's eyes, a deep sense of awe washed over her.

"I don't know who she is," past Homura whispered softly, her eyes shining with a strange, distant warmth. "I haven't met her yet, have I? But... she sounds completely magnificent. To inspire so much love, to change us so completely... she must be wonderful. Like a goddess."

[ ... ]

The Devil let out a hollow, humorless chuckle. It was a casual, cynical sound that felt entirely out of place in the tragic stillness of the room.

"She was a goddess," future Homura said, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Quite literally. And to save her from that lonely divinity, I had to become the very evil of this world. I had to rip her godhood away and force her into a false reality just so she could be happy as a human. I became a demon. And now... she looks at me with fear and suspicion. The girl we love more than life itself... hates the existence I have become."

[ Why... ]

The sick girl lay quiet, listening to the echoing despair of her future self. She didn't look at the Devil with horror. Instead, her expression was filled with an overwhelming, tender pity."You must be so incredibly lonely," the frail Homura said softly. "To hold the universe in your hands, but to be completely unable to hold the one person you did it all for."

[ Why... Why? ]

Those words hit the Devil like a physical blow. Her breath hitched. The carefully constructed facade of the supreme, uncaring Akuma shattered completely. She leaned her head forward, her long dark bangs veiling her face as she felt her hand unconsciously grip her dark dress.

[ Why is she trembling...? ]

...

"I am," the Devil confessed, her voice breaking, stripping away all formality.

[ I am so lonely it feels like my soul is constantly tearing itself apart. Every single day is a masquerade. I forced a happy ending upon a world that didn't want it, and now I am trapped in a prison of my own creation. ]

The frail Homura forced her weak arm to move, dragging her hand across the sterile bedsheets until her fingertips gently brushed against the black fabric of the Devil's sleeve.

...

She never held back...

The rhythm of the heart monitor began to slow down dangerously, the beats staggering.

Beep....... beep....... beep.......

...

"My chest... it feels so heavy," past Homura gasped lightly, her vision beginning to fade into a dark blur. She looked up at her omnipotent future self, clinging to a desperate, entirely useless hope. "Please... just tell me. Before I go... tell me that it was all worth it. Tell me that all this pain, and everything you've done... it actually brought us happiness. Please."

Future Homura stared down at her, her lips trembling. It was a completely empty reassurance, a lie that would change absolutely nothing about her current, agonizing reality. But looking at the fading eyes of her past self, she couldn't bring herself to be cruel. For once.

"Yes," the Devil lied softly, squeezing the frail hand. "It was worth it. We are happy."

...

A peaceful, relieved smile broke across the dying girl's face. "I'm glad..."

The lines on the monitor flattened entirely. The steady beeping turned into a sharp, continuous, agonizing drone.

Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii—

"Ah—!"

Homura snapped her eyes open, sitting up abruptly in her massive, dark bed.

The air in her modern, twisted version of Mitakihara, her apartment was simply cool and still in the middle of it. The moonlight streamed through the large windows, casting long, distorted shadows across the room. There were no hospital walls. There was no heart monitor.

...

And then, she felt it—a wet, hot track sliding down her cheek.

Homura raised a trembling hand to her face, her fingertips coming away soaked. She was crying. It was an incredibly foreign sensation, something she had not allowed herself to do in a very, very long time. As the supreme entity of this new world, she was supposed to be beyond tears, beyond human weakness.

But the tears wouldn't stop. They cascaded down her face, racking her shoulders with silent, bitter sobs. She wasn't just crying because of a nightmare. She was crying because of the cruel, unalterable truth of time: that sweet, fragile girl in the hospital bed—the innocent version of herself who still had hope, who had yet to be corrupted by despair—had been dead for a very, very long time.

No matter how much universe-bending power she possessed as a demon, she could never go back, and she could never bring that innocence back to life.

...

She ran a hand through her hair, letting out a long, ragged sigh into the empty room, forcing the cold, detached mask of the Devil to slowly slide back into place.

"Just a dream," she whispered to the empty night, wiping the remaining moisture from her eyes. "A worthless dream..."

Yet, as she stared out into the dark, her hand remained tightly clenched over her heart, desperately chasing the ghost of a warmth she had left behind in a hospital bed long, long ago.

Homura Akemi is already dead...

Notes:

And that's the end of this story...

The Grim Reaper never got the chance to sleep peacefully ever again after that.

Hm... I still very much lack a lot of things in this One Shot. I tried to really focus more on the symbolisms and hidden meanings, yet,
I feel like I made it too blunt.

Then again, It would truly make me pleased to hear your comments about this, it would be much appreciated as always!

Till next time, Dear Readers. See you in the next chapter.
