Work Text:
Bobette stood back to look at this year’s Christmas tree, taking in all its beauty. Its full, perfectly spaced pine boughs, its baubles hanging off branches like orbs of multicolored light captured from the crackling fireplace, and, of course, the star… Smiling down on her from the top of the tree. However, this year, it seemed to be missing something. She wiped her hands off on her sweater and went around the tree with a bundle of garland, hanging it up intermittently but it still didn’t quite look right.
With an exasperated sigh, Bobette turned around and prepared to go find her leftover decorations, but stopped to see the light bounding off of a delicate silhouette in the corridor. Cautiously, Bassie entered the little area and greeted, “Hi, Bobette.”
Bobette chuckled and told her, “I didn’t expect you to be here, and so late too!”
The basket showed a small, nervous smile and swayed a little, readjusting her flowers.
“I can leave, if you want…”
“No, it’s fine! I love that you’re here right now, I have a bit of a predicament,” Bobette prefaced and leaned back on the skating rink railing. With a shiver, Bassie joined her, a tiny bit closer than she was expecting.
“It’s cold in here,” Bassie remarked and warmed her hands up on her legs.
“We could go over to the fireplace!”
“Oh! No, don’t worry. I’m okay.”
Clasping her hands together, the ornament motioned at the tree. “This is missing something.”
She studied it for a moment before moving from her place towards Bobette’s pine tree. It was a step up from the normal ground to really improve its grandeur and she failed to notice it as soon as it crossed her path. Before Bobette could warn her, Bassie’s foot snagged on the overhang and she tumbled into the tree in one cartoonish motion.
“Shoot, are you okay?!” She exclaimed, hopping up and rushing over.
Bassie only massaged the side of her head before saying, “Please please PLEASE don’t tell anyone I just did that.”
The ornament gave her a hearty nod and crouched down, offering out a glassy hand. Bassie seemed rather shocked when she realized Bobette’s offer, though began blushing not long after taking the invitation. When both were standing, Bobette donned a look of surprise and exclaimed, “Bassie, your flowers–”
“Wait, are they gone?” She patted her empty head and frowned. “Oh..”
“No, look!”
Confused, the basket turned to see most of the flowers nestled in the tree’s boughs, catching orange light through their translucent petals and their tips.
“That… doesn’t look bad,” She voiced.
“Oh, it’s just the thing for this year!” Bobette chirped, practically bouncing with joy. “Thank you, Bassie!”
“I…” her fretting stopped when she realized Bobette’s ingenuity, “No problem..?” She smiled happily.
