Work Text:
Black woke up feeling groggy. He got up like normal, got dressed into his usual gi like normal, but he didn't feel normal. There was a specific problem that had been lingering on his mind recently, the Zero Mortal Plan. A divine plan, one he and his counterpart had dreamed of for as long as they could remember. It was so close to being finished, but there were still bugs to be squashed. Those bugs didn't just mean the humans, one of those bugs also happened to be himself.
Black sat himself down on the porch where a table, tray of tea, and a Zamasu sat. The god sat so peacefully it felt like treason to even be near him, but despite that the false Saiyan sat down and got his morning cup of tea. It was the same, it tasted the same, but didn't feel the same. He didn't even look at Zamasu once, which was odd for the both of them.
"What is the matter?"
It wasn't shocking to Black that just from his facial expression, Zamasu could tell something was up. He disliked the idea of scratching that fragile demeanour that Zamasu held, but this was an important discussion that needed to be spoken about.
"We have a slight...issue."
Black looked down, trying to think of the words he already knew. The tea cups grip was tightened also, threatening to crack. If this went how Black imagined it would, the broken tea cups would be the least of either of their worries.
"An issue?"
Zamasu's previously closed eyes opened wide, curious as to what Black could be on about. "Tell me what that issue may be."
Black sighed, he knew he shouldn't be condescending with it. Both of them were the same person, so the thought had been bound to travel to Zamasu as well.
"I am a mortal, correct?"
"Yes, that is correct."
"We are enacting the Zero Mortal Plan, soon enough it will come to fruition and you will finally live in the utopia we had always dreamed of."
The Kai's eyes dropped slightly, he paid close attention to Black's words.
"'You'? We may be the same person but we are still two different beings, so its 'WE will finally live in the utopia we had always dreamed of.'" Zamasu tilted his head slightly, something was up. "It isn't like you to make mistakes like that."
"It wasn't a mistake." Black rested his elbow on the table, this was both harder and easier than he thought it would be. "Tell me, what is the Zero Mortal Plan?"
Zamasu looked around for a second, tell him? "But you already know what the plan is Zamasu, but if you insist. The Zero Mortal Plan is where we both destroy and erase those pathetic mortals, leaving the multiverse to ourselves and free of filth."
"Exactly, so, if as I harbour a mortal body...you will need to kill me too, when the time comes."
He was unsure as to what Black was getting at beforehand, but when those words hit his ears he dropped his cup of tea, spilling it all over his outfit. It wasn't a matter though, the god was too busy trying to comprehend the foul words that just spilt out his counterparts mouth.
"Excuse me?"
"Oh come on don't say you haven't thought about it!" Black wasn't angry at Zamasu, but this matter had been lingering on his mind for so long he didn't care to control his tone or manner of speaking, even slamming him hands down onto the wooden table. "Its simple! My body is of a mortal, so in order for our plan to be truly completed you'd need to-"
Before Black could finish Zamasu got up rather abruptly.
"And be alone? When we started this plan, I was under the assumption that we would be together. That WE would rule over the multiverse, not just me." His voice was shaky, Zamasu never cried but the idea of Black being ripped away from him by his own hand hurt him more than he'd ever say out loud.
Black stood up as well, sighing again and looking away from his counterpart. The tea left forgotten on his side and on Zamasu's outfit.
"The one thing we both hate about mortals is their hypocrisy. Tell me Zamasu, if I were to stay alive, wouldn't that make you, no, US, just as bad as them?"
The Kai stopped in his tracks and thought, it would. Normally he'd be furious over being compared to those lowly mortals, but having it come from Black all so suddenly, asking him to kill his counterpart, it wasn't something Zamasu could keep up with.
"If you won't do it, I'll do it myself"
Out of everything that Black had said since he woke up, how fast everything went, those were words he never even thought would be considered yet alone said. It was one thing battling with the idea of himself having to kill his counterpart, but having just heard that Black would kill himself if Zamasu didn't do it for him? That was enough for the Kai to finally shed some tears. It was pathetic, really, a god now having to hold onto the back of a chair to support himself, to stop him from collapsing onto his knees and begging Black to stay with him. No multiverse would be worth ruling over if it wasn't with his counterpart, and he had no way of reversing his immortality so when the time came he could embrace Black once more.
Seeing this also allowed the false Saiyan to finally cry as well, he originally didn't want to in fear of being seen as weak in front of his other part, but having the roles reversed made it easier.
"I don't like the idea either, I want to rule over this multiverse, this perfect utopia, with you. But what gods would we be if we didn't keep our promises? It would be a sin in itself."
His head hung lower.
Zamasu suddenly moved forward past the table and forgotten tea to embrace Black, just like they did in their first encounter. A memory none of them would forget, if anything since then hugging had become a normal thing for them. But this? This wasn't filled with the same warmth, the same love, the same agreement that the other hugs harboured. No, this one was laced with sin, disagreement and fear.
The Sin of Hypocrisy.
The Disagreement of their Ideals.
The Fear of losing Black.
The green Kai was lost for words, but he thought as hard as he could. How could he convince Black to stay? Convince him so that he didn't need to die by Zamasu or his own hand, convince him so that they could rule together, convince him so that they could be together. That was until he thought of something.
"....We are gods, no?" Zamasu asked under shaky but growing steady breath.
"Obviously"
Black pulled away slightly, still holding onto Zamasu's arms as he still couldn't bring himself to look directly into his silver eyes.
"Therefore, we get to dictate what is sin and what is not. What is right and what is wrong. What should stay and what should go." Zamasu closed his eyes, he really hoped he could convince Black to change his mind. If that painted them both as hypocrites then what of it? No one would be there to judge them. Afterall, a world without Black was a far greater sin.
The false Saiyan finally gained the ability to look into his counterparts eyes again, seeing the fire, determination and pure will inside of them. Black didn't want to go and Zamasu didn't want him to either. It was true, both of them were gods. They'd get to rule over this soon to be perfect utopia as they both made all the rules, to decide what was sin and what was divine.
And at that moment, divinity was the only thing present.
It stayed when they went to get a new pot of tea and Zamasu cleaned up.
It stayed when they made jokes and lightened the mood.
And it stayed when they embraced once again.
Sin was to be no more.
