Work Text:
There are sights in the Mojave one does not always get used to seeing and for more than a few people it seems, one of those sights is Dusty.
They don’t think they’re quite that odd but apparently walking around with a little gaggle of geckos at her heels and offering to train more into being less of a problem for towns is more than a little weird in the eyes of most people, and that’s taking into account the general bizarreness that’s true of people in the Mojave and the areas surrounding it. Maybe it was the way she walked in like a gunslinger and carried enough to be one if she wanted to. Or it was the simple fact that she was so giddy and affectionate with the little creatures and would argue on their behalf, something nobody did for the little pests. Or perhaps it was the even simpler fact that they were a very odd stranger who wandered into town unannounced and uninvited, grinning, joking, and offering a highly-specific service. Who’s to say?
And besides, it’s hardly like people don’t enjoy her presence. Children will always offer caps or trades to pet the more docile of Dusty’s geckos and people in general are just happy to hear someone out when they offer what they claim to be a more permanent solution than what they currently have. The only people who don’t seem to like her are the gecko hunters and that’s to be expected really, they can’t really bring themself to care that much.
She does this because they love the troublesome little things, always have done, ever since they took in an egg as a kid and had Baby toddling after them. There’s nothing that could make her change this life. Nothing at all.
