Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Malleus held a paper out to Riddle.

“What is this?” Riddle asked, taking the paper and started to read it; the first word that he came across made him freeze.

“ADAPTION!” Riddled yelled making other students look there way as they passed. MALLEUS FUCKING DRACONIA gave Riddle a adaption paper.

Riddle was at loss for words. Riddle looked up to meet the prince’s face, his mouth as agape.

“Yes that’s what it is. I was wondering if you would like to become my heir since you are like a son to Leona.” Malleus smiled, his hands interlocked together and rested on his chest.

Riddled cleared his throat and looked down again to read more only to see two signatures at the bottom were there was two lines, Leona’s and Malleus names were signed on the top line; the bottom was blank for his name.

“Malleus, you know I have a mother, right?” Riddle looked up again.

“Yes I am aware. I’m also aware she is not fit to be a mother.” Malleus answered. “You can think on this, I am not in a rush or trying to force you to sign.”

Riddle nodded, Malleus kept the same expression on his face, he kept talking as he took Riddle’s silence as ‘not sure’ so he slowly turned to his side.

“I hope you do make up your mind, have a good day Riddle..”
Malleus started to walk away, Riddle stayed there until the dragon fae was gone from his site.

This whole scene felt very sudden, it felt like it didn’t happen at all. It is hard to believe Malleus would ask someone to be his heir, it was unbelievable until it happens to Riddle.

He still has a mom though, not a great one but at the end of the day they are both of the same blood.

She’s alive and well as well, it would be hard for Riddle to be adopted since she’s alive and there’s no evidence of her being abusive.

But maybe Malleus didn’t need evidence, he is next in line to be king after all; he has more say than a normal citizen.

But Would the court still need proof?

Would Malleus actually be able to adopt Riddle?

Riddle spaced out just thinking about it, something was approaching though. It was right behind him, its arms wrapped around Riddle’s waist fast and hoisted the red head up off of the ground. Riddle gasped in surprise.

“Hey~ Goldfishie~!” Floyd squeezed Riddle tight against his chest. Riddle dropped the paper.

“Floyd let me go!” Riddle started to yell, but Floyd ignored him as he bent down to pick up the paper Riddle dropped; Floyd made sure to be careful to so Riddle wouldn’t fall.

Once the paper was retrieved Floyd stood back up and started to read it as Riddle squirmed in his arms.

“Oooo does Sea Slug and Sea Lion want to adopt you?!”

“Floyd let go that is private information!”

“Nah, I’m good, I love having Goldfishie in my arms.” Floyd said as he stopped reading and wrapped both arms around the red head, paper still in hand.

“You know you should say yes to being adopted, your mom’s a bitch.”

“Floyd! Don’t say that about MY mom!” Floyd started to flip Riddle around so the housewarden could be face to face.

“But it’s true, she’ll keep me away from you forever!” Floyd groaned dramatically. “I want to stay with you forever!”

Riddle sighed. “Floyd.. I am not going anywhere.”

Instead of being angry Riddle chose peace and smiled. “You mean it!” Floyd pressed a kiss to Riddle’s forehead which made Riddle’s face match the color of his own hair. People paused and stared wide eyed at the two.

“Floyd! You can’t just be doing that in public!” Riddle spoke sternly, Floyd for some reason decided to let him go.

“But why?! You look so cute flustered, you look just like a goldfish.” Floyd put his arms behind his neck.

Riddle didn’t respond though, he turned around and started to walk away; he was done with the conversation.

“Hey wait! Goldfishie!” Riddle started to run, he didn’t get far though as Floyd scooped him back into the his arms; the mer had a big grin on his face.

“Why are you trying to run away from me!” Riddle sighed, he was being held bridle style and it felt even more embarrassing than the kiss. It made Riddle go red not by being flustered but by being angry, he needed to do things like study and think about the damn paper.

Riddle’s eyebrows scrunched with anger.

“LET GO OF ME, I AM DONE WITH YOUR GAMES!”

“Nah.”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘Nah’?!”

“Nah.”

“QUIT SAYING THAT!” Riddle screamed.

“Floyd there you are.” By some miracle Jade showed up, luck was truly on Riddle’s side.

“Azul is looking for you.” Jade said.

“I have basketball though.” Floyd responded.

“I don’t see you at practice though.”

“I am going right now.” Floyd grinned at his brother, he gently put down the red head and looked at his brother for a few seconds.

“I should be going now, bye Goldfishie!” Floyd started to run, but it wasn’t the right way to his club.

Jade and Riddle looked at each other, Jade nodded before speaking.

“Well, see you later Riddle.” Jade began to walk the opposite way of his twin brother.

“Bye.” The house warden responded back.

Riddle was finally alone, it was time he should get to his dorm; he is busy after all.

So he went back to his room, opening the door and walking in; he closed it behind him.

He placed down books and other things, he placed the paper to the side and sat down to began with work.

He will have to think about the paper later.

Riddle stopped what his was doing as his phone started to ring. He picked it up to see his mother’s contact, his face lowered as he accepted the call; if he waited any longer to accept then she would be very angry.

“Hello Riddle, took you long enough to accept the call.” She said. It hasn’t even been a second since it started to ring.

“Sorry mother, won’t happen again.”

“Good, now I have a question involving your recent test. You got three points off of it.” So that’s why she is calling.. how did she know about the test though? It was a simple mistake. She wasn’t supposed to see it.

He remembers looking at the test, he remembers the tears that came with it. He doesn’t like it when he cries, he couldn’t help it though.

“I know it was a mistake..” Riddle could have never gotten points off if he never got distracted, Riddle can blame Floyd for that.

“You don’t have mistakes! RoseHearts don’t make mistakes like this!”

Riddle flinched slightly as she yelled.

“Make one more mistake like this then I might as well teach you myself!”

“Yes mother, I am sorry-“ Riddle could not finished his apology as she hung up, the red head just stared at the screen for a bit.

He placed the phone down face first onto the desk, his eyes met the paper he laid to the side. He wonders how much of his mother he can handle, time will only tell when he actually considers writing his name on the paper.

Riddle picked the page up gently, he reread the two names over and over again until a loud knock came from his door. He didn’t get a chance to say anything as the door slammed open, a certain mer was walking in.

“HELLOO GOLDFISHIE!” Floyd stomped in and slammed the door shut, he should have locked his door.

“Floyd I suggest you don’t come barging into other people’s rooms.” Riddle stood up, Floyd had one hand on his hip.

“Boring! Goldfishie I want to hang out.” Floyd went over to Riddle’s bed and laid down, he sprawled his legs and arms across the whole surface.

“Come lay with me!” Floyd looked to Riddle, Riddle just stood there.

“I am good here, thank you though.” Floyd started to pout.

“Your mean.”

“I try my best, now why are you here unannounced?” Riddle spoke, Floyd sat up.

“I was wondering if you would like to come to my place this spring?” Riddle stood still for a second, he never expected Floyd to invite him to his home but it’s under water and his mom is expecting him.

“Floyd I can’t swim and I have to go back to my home.” Riddle said but Floyd started to look annoyed at him.

“But there’s a potion for that and why not just lie to her, I want you to come with me!” Floyd was now back on his back on the bed. “I can also show you how to swim!”

“Well that’s nice, but I will have to think about it.”

“BOOO..”

“Floyd..” Riddle sighed. A knock came from his door.

“Riddle, it’s time to eat.” Trey spoke without opening the door, because he actually knows how to respect privacy.

“Okay, I will be there in a second.” Riddle responded, he looked towards Floyd. “I will be back.”
Floyd got up as Riddle headed to the door. “Hey you haven’t answered my question and I want to come eat to!”

“Floyd this isn’t your dorm!”

“So? they won’t mind.”

Riddle rolled his eyes as he opened the door and closed the door in Floyd’s face.
