the enterprise has been refit. it's new and completely different from what jim remembered it as. however, it is still the enterprise and therefore is still beautiful. jim is in command of the enterprise once again. after a year of being worked on and majorly changed, the enterprise is on another mission assigned by starfleet.
it's a new ship, new mission, new crew. to jim, this means new possibilities. sure he may not know his way around the ship since it's drastically different, but he wants to feel familiarity with the enterprise like he used to.
for some reason, jim cannot. there's something it's missing. he can get over the new look and feel of the enterprise, but there is one thing he just has to have back. there's someone he's missing. someone who was at his side wherever he went, whether be the bridge, new planets, or simply the rec room. someone of which he had a bond so close that they knew what the other was thinking. someone who would always be there and always will.
but they're not. he's not here. spock is not here.
spock is on vulcan completing kolinahr, purging all emotion from his vulcan mind. spock is not thinking about jim at all. although it bothers jim, what can he do? it was spock's decision to leave starfleet. it was spock's decision to leave jim. he can't force spock to do anything he doesn't want. at this point, he's considering purging his emotions as well. it's only logical.
jim sits on the captain's chair pondering. he decides he should let go of the past. logically, that's what spock has decided to do as well.
