Chapter Text

Chapter One-

Jonathan didn’t know what he and Nancy were. During the trip to Murray’s apartment in Illinois they had slept together but, then everything happened with Will. Then, the kids and Steve. Jonathan hadn’t really even had time to sit with what happened between them that night, or the fact that he’d lost his virginity. Or the fact that he’d kissed Nancy Wheeler. As his feet hit the floor that morning, he found himself nervous to go to school. Not the kind of nervous he usually felt, not the outcast anxiety but, a good nervous…maybe? When he thought about seeing Nancy in the hallway, an almost giddy feeling rose up in him. Would she feel the same way he did? Was it a one time thing?
As he got ready for school, Will barged into his room.

“Jesus Will, there is a thing called personal space.” Jonathan quickly pulled his jeans on, no reason for his twelve year old brother to see him in his underwear.

“We’re going to be late…I was just wondering what you were doing.” Will says innocently, with a slight smirk.

“What did you do?” Jonathan suspiciously asked, Will almost never smirked.

“Nothing. When have I had time to do anything, Jonathan? A few days ago I was literally starring in my own version of ‘The Exorcist.” Will said it so casually that Jonathan had to convince himself he’d heard right.

“Well, at least your sense of humor is still intact. You’re still up to something but, we’re gonna be late.” Jonathan slung his bag over his shoulder and grabbed his keys off his desk, venturing into the kitchen to see their mother hurriedly getting ready, forcing her feet into her work shoes.

“Late…I’m so late! Ugh, damn alarm clock!” Joyce ranted, brunette hair wild, uniform hurriedly tugged on. Jonathan and Will shared a look, Joyce Byers never overslept.

“Mom? Are you…okay?” Will trailed off, Joyce’s eyes popped up towards her boys. Jonathan awkwardly waved at her, wondering the same thing as Will.

“Mr. Clark? What are you…why? I’m so confused.” Will squinted as Scott Clark, who was straightening his tie.

“Oh god.” Jonathan instantly made the connection, his mother had slept with Scott Clark. Will’s favorite teacher. Jonathan rubbed his hands over his face, he knew his mother went on dates. It’s not like Jonathan was blind to that but, she had never brought a man home without introducing him. Or doing the walk of shame.

“Don’t freak out…we will talk about this tonight when I get home.” Joyce was looking at Jonathan when she spoke, because all the color had drained from his face.

“Do we have to?” Jonathan winced.

“Yes!” Joyce sharply looked at her oldest son.

“Hello Will, I will see you in class.” Scott obviously wanted to get out of the Byers house as fast as possible.

“Mom-“ Will started still confused, even though Will was thirteen years old, he was still a very sheltered child.

“Come on Will, we’re going to be late.” Jonathan pressed his lips together, holding the door open.

“Are you and Nancy together?” Will asked as Jonathan started the car, his younger brother’s question shot him back to reality.

“It’s…complicated.” Jonathan didn’t know what they were, Will’s question caught him off guard.

“Are you gonna sneak her into your room like mom did Mr. Clark?” Will wondered, making Jonathan choke.

“What?” Jonathan couldn’t believe those words had come out of Will’s mouth. His sweet baby brother.

“Do you think I didn’t see Nancy holding you after I had gotten exorcised? Friends don’t do that.” Will made a good point. After dropping Will off at the middle school, Jonathan parked his car at Hawkins High, taking a deep breath before going inside. As soon as he stepped in the front hallway, he heard all the whispers that surrounded him. Everyone thought Jonathan was a freak and constantly picked at him, he’d gotten used to it but he never felt any better about it.

“Hey.” A soft hand on his arm pulled him out of thinking about the Hawkins High hierarchy, Nancy Wheeler was looking up at him, blue eyes soft. It pulled him back to when he’d bitten the bullet and finally kissed her, a smile tugged at his lips.

“Hey.” Jonathan would let her take the lead.

“How’s Will doing?” Nancy asked, genuinely.

“He’s doing good, much better.” Jonathan nodded, ugh. Why was he being skittish? They had literally seen each other naked weeks ago.

“Good.” Nancy seemed to be just as skittish, which almost made him feel better. Almost.

“Stop overthinking it.” Nancy gave him a knowing look, a small smile tugging at her lips.

“What?” Jonathan blinked.

“The weekend at Murray’s, what happened between us. You’re overthinking it. I like you, Jonathan. If I didn’t, you wouldn’t be talking to me right now.” Nancy softly chuckled, placing one hand on his cheek.

“Thank god.” Jonathan let a breath out, he hadn’t even realized he’d been holding. Nancy leaned up and pressed her lips to his, hesitantly at first. Because of the height difference, Nancy had to lean up on her tip toes. Jonathan’s arms wrapped around her, leaning down so that Nancy wouldn’t have to lean up so much. Their lips pressed together, it felt just like it had in Illinois. Jonathan’s hand came up to hold her face as he gently dragged his lips across hers, the other hand loosely tangled in her hair. It didn’t seem to bother either of them that they were in the middle of the hallway at Hawkins High. Nancy’s hands wrapped around his neck, deepening the kiss.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to get tired of that.” Jonathan admitted, a nervous chuckle leaving his mouth.

“Me either.” Nancy smiled up at him, it was a genuine smile. Not like the fake smile she wore most of the time, her smile was nice.

“Walk me to class.” Nancy noticed it was almost time for homeroom.

“Yes ma’am.” Jonathan slightly smirked, reaching for her hand and interlocking their fingers.

“Scott Clark was at my house this morning.” Jonathan told Nancy as they walked down the hall.

“As in the boys science teacher?” Nancy raised an eyebrow.

“The very same.” Jonathan confirmed with a nod.

“Is he making house calls now?” Nancy wondered, making Jonathan snicker.

“I don’t think so, because he came out of my mother’s bedroom.” Jonathan wished that was all.

“Joyce brought a man home?? What about Hopper- I thought things were getting serious between them! I need details.” Nancy’s blue eyes lit up, Jonathan recognized the look in her eyes. The reporter in Nancy was out. Full force.

“Nance, I don’t know anything and I don’t want to.” Jonathan scratched the back of his neck.

“Why not? Scott could be your new dad.” Nancy had a teasing look in her eyes.

“Oh, you’re so funny.”
