Ilya is slowly emerging from a deep slumber when he hears the distant buzz of his phone on the bedside table—from the long and persistent noise, he figures it must be a call. He grabs it blindly and, without opening his eyes, he lays the phone on his ear as he takes the call.
"Hello."
"Where are you!?" A loud and raspy voice greets him, and he recognizes it as his agent, Vanessa.
"Huh?"
"I've been calling you, texting you, I even went to your hotel room but you left!"
At the mention of his hotel room Ilya snaps awake and sits on the bed in a startled jump.
"I—"
"No. I don't care where you went or with who," she cuts him off quickly. "There are more pressing matters." Before he can put another word he hears her take a deep breath and braces himself for whatever has Vanessa in this mood. "I had to change your flight. The medical team requested a revision and the Coach wants you in Boston earlier."
"Fuck."
"Exactly."
"What time?"
Originally, Ilya had two days free, on account of a slight discomfort in his thigh muscle after the game. They told him it wasn't necessary he flew back with the team, he could rest for a few days in the hotel and then return. The scheduled flight was today late at night, Ilya could sleep on his bed in Boston and check with the team early the next day.
"You have... two hours, at most."
"What?" he exclaims, loudly.
"That's why I've been calling you!" she replies, just as loudly. "You're horrible for my health," she says with a sigh. "I'm already at the airport, take a cab and get your ass here!"
Ilya doesn't have a chance to retort or say sorry before she ends the call. He blankly stares at the screen until it goes black.
"Everything okay?" Scott's voice startles him, but Ilya quickly recomposes his face to a neutral expression.
"I have to go."
Scott frowns, confused at the abrupt change of plans since he already knew Ilya was going to stay late into the day.
"Team wants me earlier, I don't know," he replies to the silent question with a shrug. He kind of hates this. He was expecting to have, at least, one more meal with Hunter—even if it was something delivered because Hunter didn't have anything on his fridge—and try to convince him to have sex on the pristine couch—brand new, according to Scott—maybe ride him there, slowly, to break in the cushions. Then a shower, a nap on Scott's broad chest, coffee, and leave. Not this rushed bullshit.
"Oh… okay."
Ilya tries to rub the sleepiness and frustration off his face, so he doesn't notice when Scott approaches him until he feels the warmth of his body standing in front of him. When Ilya looks up, Scott's eyes are staring directly at him, like he is trying to read his face. He makes an effort to not show anything. You don't know me, he stubbornly says in his head.
They share a secret, a bed, and, probably, the unique knowledge of what it feels to lose a parent at a very young age, but that doesn't mean anything. They aren't friends or teammates. Hunter doesn't have the right to get into his head.
A big hand grabs his jaw and by reflex Ilya releases the tension, opening his mouth slightly, more due to the pressure of Hunter's fingers than his own volition. He forgets about the time, about the flight, about the bubbling frustration inside his chest.
Hunter kisses him without fanfare, bending himself into an awkward position to meet Ilya's mouth. But the more he prolongs the kiss, the more Ilya starts to melt into the sheets. Ilya slides his arms to lower himself slowly, since Hunter's hand is still anchored on his face and the other is used as support to not collapse on top of Ilya.
Once his head hits the mattress, Scott's lips move to his neck and warm hands start to roam over his naked chest. Ilya sighs pleased. Having woken up early, Scott is fully dressed in a comfortable cotton t-shirt with the Admirals logo and well-worn sweatpants, both fabrics feel nice and soft against Ilya's bare skin.
"Hunter," he says when a hand grabs his hip, a teasing finger over the hem of his boxer trying to reach for more skin.
"Mh."
"The flight," he tries, but the feeling of wet kisses trailing a path on his stomach interrupts him. Scott is lowering himself and Ilya knows if his mouth goes further down he won't be able to stop it on time, and the visual image of Vanessa scolding him for missing the flight it's enough to sober his arousal. He uses his legs to trap Scott's body and with one hand grabs a handful of his short hair to catch his attention. "This is very nice," he says, light teasing on his voice, "but I have to go." To emphasize, he holds up two fingers, "Two hours until the flight."
"Oh, fuck." The urgency is reflected in Hunter's wide eyes. "Yeah, right." He quickly gets off Ilya and awkwardly stands next to the bed, as if he had forgotten what he was going to say or do midway.
"What?" Ilya asks, sensing a strange tension in the air.
"Your clothes…" Scott says quietly, not looking at him.
Ilya frowns and his head moves to scan the room. He left his bag in Scott's bedroom, and some of his clothes, already worn, were carefully draped with familiarity throughout the room; but now his pants and t-shirt were no longer on the arm chair, nor his jacket on the hook by the door.
"Hunter."
Scott scrunches his face into a painful expression and Ilya is already deciding if he is going to curse him in English or Russian.
"I sent them to the cleaners," Scott finally admits.
"Are you serious!?"
"They were dirty, you've been here for three days!"
"I was going to wash them at home!"
No one explicitly says Ilya has been barely clothed in those three days, except for the first one after the game between the Raiders and Admirals. Or that is weird as fuck doing laundry at your hookup's place.
"And now what," Ilya says exasperated, arms extended at the sides. "I don't have any more clothes!"
Scott rolls his eyes at him, like Ilya is being dramatic. "Just grab something of mine," he replies quickly, as if it was a non-issue. Maybe in another circumstance it could be a non-issue. Marley has stolen one of his jackets once; Ilya himself had borrowed a pair of socks from Connors, and he still has the umbrella Ryan let him have the day a sudden rain fell on them after a dinner; also his casual lovers, most often than not, like to take his Raiders t-shirt as souvenir. Ilya doesn't mind, he had a lot of them and they are the same as the ones you find in stores.
But Hunter isn't a teammate, nor a friend or a lover. He is… something weird, but comfortable.
"Fine!" A little annoyed at the situation, Ilya marches towards Hunter's closet, not waiting for permission or even asking what clothes he can take. You want me to grab your clothes, okay, fine, he thinks with a sort of petty vengeance.
He considers borrowing something expensive, designer clothes, but it doesn't take long to notice that Hunter doesn't have anything like that. At least, nothing extremely expensive or recognizable as such. The most fancy pieces are his suits and Ilya can't wear those to the airport.
It almost makes him laugh. Aren't you Scott Hunter a legendary hockey superstar? He almost yells from there to mock him, but decides to keep rummaging—he doesn't have much time.
It's easy to know what clothes Hunter uses more often, they are on the rack close to the door and look well loved; but on the far corner, under the winter jackets and perfectly folded, there a few pieces of clothes that seem strangely unused, like something you would see in a store, stacked neatly with the same design peaking out from the fold.
"Of course," Ilya chuckles. Hunter doesn't have many sponsorships for a star of his level, but everything he endorses has been sport related. The brand UA had him as the face of most of his campaigns for years now; Ilya remembers clearly, during his first year in America, how shocked he was to see the face of the Admirals' captain plastered all over a store window. Handsome, he had thought at that time, stopping in the middle of the street to admire the piercing hazel eyes through the glass.
This was an old collection, Ilya doesn't have memory of it, so maybe it was from before he started to play in the MHL. The design is simple but it's clearly inspired by Hunter and the Admirals. He grabs a matching set of shorts and sleeveless top without thinking twice, and then, for good measure, he also grabs one of Hunter's more comfortable hoodies and a pair of underwear.
"You said I could take your clothes," he says as soon as comes out of the bathroom. Scott sighs at the clear loss of one of his favorite pieces of clothing, but doesn't argue. Ilya smiles, pleased.
Hunter walks him to the door and he tells him a car is waiting. "Take this," he gives him a bottle—a protein shake that Ilya will probably find very tasteless. "You didn't have breakfast."
Ilya grabs the bottle and puts it inside of his almost empty bag. "Thanks."
Scott can't drive him to the airport, that is ridiculous thought, but Ilya stays there, standing on the deserted hallway, buying time by fixing his hat and checking his phone—Vanessa hasn't sent any threat so far, so he is fine—waiting to see if Hunter is planning to say something else or just shut the door on his face.
"You have to go," Scott says, in an indecipherable tone.
"Yes."
"Safe flight, Rozanov." Ilya nods and when he looks up, Hunter grabs the visor of the hat pulling it slightly up and gives him the faintest kiss on his forehead. "Don't lose my hoodie," he whispers against Ilya's skin.

Rozanov has been spotted at JFK airport. Apparently, despite initially not flying back with the rest of the team, the Boston's captain seems in good condition.

You're reading too much into this blurry ass photo, you don't have jobs?
BR🖋 @rozyyy_81
excuse you, i'm doing this at my job, i can multitask
It's strange to wake up to an empty bed, but it is more strange feeling uneasy for waking up alone in his own bed in the same apartment he has been living alone for several years.
Maybe I should move…
To dissipate panicked induced life-changing decisions Scott jumps off the bed and grabs his phone. He doesn't like social media very much, but contractually he has to follow some brands and important people, and sometimes other players just prefer to communicate through there if they aren't from the same team. After he pours the hot water into the French press, he opens the app as he waits for the coffee to be ready—in the three days that Ilya has been occupying every physical and mentally space in Scott's life, he has ignored all notifications and messages.
He likes some highlights of the game and the latest post on the Admiral's official account, replies to a few DMs and then he notices the colorful circle of a new story on the UA account. Bored and trying not to think about the lack of noise that makes the emptiness of the place even more evident—weirdly, since Ilya isn't a particularly boisterous person in private—he opens it.
It's a repost from another account, a short video of none other than Ilya Rozanov himself entering the Boston Riders' gym with a few players obnoxiously cheering for his return. Before a coherent thought can be form, Scott taps for the next, which is Ilya, again—this time a photo of him in one of the machines from one of the Raiders' trainers personal account.
Another day, another training session with Roz, preparing for the next game 💪
It reads on the original post, and also UA added on top:
Pleased the captain is in good condition and wearing the appropriate clothing for a full recovery 😉
In the photo Rozanov is wearing a UA matching set he clearly stole from Scott. The Admiral's red contrasting against the black and yellow from the training space makes Scott groan—he should have known better. Regrettably, and with a spark of panic, he goes straight to the comment section of the original post.
Thankfully, no one seems to have made the connection to him, most of the comments are celebrating Ilya isn't injured and available for the upcoming playoffs, and the few that catch the brand are speculating about a new endorsement.
"Please, no," Scott pleads out loud to no one in particular.

"I have bad news and good news."
Scott sighs, there's never a good sign when Matt begins the call like this.
"Shoot."
"UA is going to launch a special collection inspired by the top MHL teams and they want you not only as part of the campaign, but also to design some of the pieces in collaboration," he shares excitedly, all in one breath.
"Wow…" That's good and unexpected. UA has been one of the only brands that has believed in him since his rookie year until now, basically his whole career, but it's been a while since they wanted to make a collection with him. The only time they made one it didn't sell pretty well. Guaranteed, Scott was fairly new and hadn't even achieved the captaincy yet, but still. "And the bad news?"
Matt takes a moment as the line goes silent and Scott runs over his head every possible catastrophic scenario that could require this level of caution.
"Ilya Rozanov is going to be part of it too."
"What?"
"I know, I know, but he is a captain and won—"
"No."
"Wait, this is a very—"
"I said, no." Scott pinches the bridge of his nose trying to think. "Tell them I can't. Vaughn can go."
"Scott—"
"Matt."
There's a big sigh on the other side of the line. "Just, think about it, read the email."
Scott doesn't have to read anything. He already knows that no amount of money would be enough to make him willingly choose to be in the same room as Rozanov, in close proximity, without a puck between them. Ilya is dangerous enough on the ice, and off the ice he's going to be a nightmare. That brat has no shame and, unfortunately, takes insatiable pleasure in taunting Scott. Besides, the only way Scott has to shut him up isn’t exactly appropriate for a crowded public place—and all that without accounting for the presence of other team's captains.
No, there's no possible way he is going to accept what will undoubtedly be a public humiliation.
The talk shifts to other topics, like the upcoming fundraiser gala and Scott archives the issue in the back of his mind.
At night before putting his phone on no disturb a text from an unknown number arrives.
It's a photo, one from his last UA campaign, nothing crazy, just him wearing a white a compression shirt, shorts, and sitting on the bench of the Admirals' locker room, staring right into the camera.
"You look good Hunter, for being 100 000 years old."
Scott frowns, there is no mystery about who it is. He hasn't saved his number and always deletes the texts but is easy to know when Ilya messages him.
"I promise to not bite, old man."
The nerve that only reacts to Ilya's chirping is pulsing with renowned energy, Scott doesn't even question how Ilya knew that he was going to reject the UA deal. "I do bite, kid. Don't piss me off," he replies, throwing caution to the wind.
"Ah. I don't know about that."
"You will have to show me, I'm a visual learner."
You sure are, Scott thinks as his brain floods with memories of Ilya "learning". He switches apps for the email Matt sent him and doesn't even bother to read it, he just writes a quick response agreeing with the collaboration.
It's a terrible idea, Scott is aware of it, but his blood is pumping like he is back on the ice pinning Ilya against the boards and suddenly he can't wait to see the brat again.
"Be ready," he sends before turning the lights off.
