Silence can be deafening

Notes:

Hello everyone! Sorry if this isn’t this best or if it’s too ooc. It’s my first time writing something like this and writing was always my weakest point in english classes. I hope you that you will still enjoy it and sorry again for any mistakes. Im running on 20 minutes of sleep as of writing this. I do have most of the story planned out so I should be able to finish it before the summerbreak ends? No promises tho! Any feedback in the comments please I really need it.

Chapter 1: Where are you?

Chapter Text

I never really liked Mondays. Having to wake up so early in the morning after being allowed to sleep in due to the weekend is a thing I will never get used to. What made this Monday worse though was how unusually Sendai-san acted.

“ I have some stuff to take care of before I go so you can go ahead Miyagi. “

Of course she didn’t forget to give me a peck on the cheek before storming off into her room.

I had a really weird feeling about this. She always insist, that we go to the train station together, even if we end up having to run there, so why would SHE suddenly tell ME to go ahead. The more I thought about it, the more it didn’t make any sense and before I realised it. I was already in front of my university.

After finding my lecture hall and sitting at my usual place, a familiar voice ring out.

“What’s up? Something on your mind?”

That voice belonged to none other but Maika.

“Why the long face? Did you have another fight with Sendai-san?”

“Why do you think it has something to do with Sendai-san?”

“I don’t know. I just had a feeling I guess?”

I never liked the fact that Maika and Sendai-san got along so well or the fact that whenever something happened between us, Maika would be the first to find out. And as always would pry into it no matter how much I tried not to talk about it.

“You know silence is also an answer, right?”

“She acted out of character.”

“Sendai-san?”

I honestly can’t remember the last time I tried resisting her curiosity. We had the back and forth conversation so many times that I gave up and stopped making up some stupid lies like forgetting my train pass or notebooks.

“Yeah. She said she had to take care of something and left me to go ahead.”

“Isn’t that pretty normal? Maybe she just had to finish an assignment or sort out her notes.”

“I can’t put it into words. I just had a really weird feeling about this.”

“You’re just overthinking this whole thing in my opinion.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.”

With that, the bell rang and the conversation came to an end. After some time, the weird feeling in my stomach went away and the lectures went by without any problems.

Maika wanted to check out some new bakery that opened so I texted Sendai-san that I might come home a bit late tonight. I got a reply almost instantly, but before i could check, Maika was yelling so loudly at me to hurry up that I just brushed it off as her just replaying with one of her big OKAY stickers.

………………………………………………………………………………………..

With bags full of pastries and all kinds of breads I finally arrive home and as always chant my part of our spell.

“Sendai-san, I’m home. Could you please help me out here? Maika bought way too much and forced me to take some for you too.”

All that I’m met with though is silence.

I remember that I left Sendai-san on delivered so maybe she mentioned in her message that she is also going out. After putting down all the bags, I finally open our chat.

[ I’m really sorry but there is an unexpected class trip. I probably won’t be back until Wednesday.]

What? A class trip? To where? With who? When did Sendai-san found out about this and why did she choose to tell me about it so late? Did she deliberately texted me this so that i couldn’t stop her from going?
Why? Did I do something to make her mad at me? Is that why she acted so differently this morning.

There were so many question I had but all of them went unanswered. I just stood there, in the middle of our kitchen, for what felt hours. Just thinking. Her way of saying “Welcome back” followed by a warm hug and me being me by pushing her away followed my a “get off of me Sendai-san” even though deep down I know that this is just a reminder that I’m not in high school anymore. That I am not coming home to an empty apartment anymore. That there is someone to finish my chant of “I’m home” with “Welcome back”.

And before I come back to my senses. It’s already Tuesday morning. Apparently I fell asleep on our dining table and standing up I realise I’m still wearing the clothes I had on yesterday. I don’t even remember what happened after I put down my phone but after checking our chat again. All that I could follow up with was “Ok” to that gut wrenching message. I also missed a call from her but every time I try calling back, it just goes into voicemail.

My body is screaming with pain from the uncomfortable position I slept in and hunger due to skipping dinner yesterday so maybe before I do anything else, I should probably take care of that. The things from the bakery have gone stale by now but taste is the last things on my list of concerns right now. Before I even realise what I’m doing, there are two plates with muffins, scrambled eggs and sausages.

How did I do that? I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is that this is all Sendai-san’s fault.
