Chapter 1: The Cooper Legacy
With his mother pulling a grueling double shift in the ER at the city hospital and his dad pulling night patrol duty at the precinct, Player had the house completely to himself. Being left home alone was standard operating procedure, but digging through the sealed storage crawlspace beneath his bedroom floorboards certainly wasn't.
After an hour of hauling, Player sat back on his heels, breathing heavy as he stared at a massive, dusty iron-bound trunk sitting in the middle of his room. The lock wasn't keyed—it was an intricate, old-school mechanism shaped like a stylized cane. After a few minutes of clever tinkering with the tumbler, the lid popped open with a heavy thud.
Inside sat a gleaming blue mask, a rusted brass cane, and leather-bound journals stamped with a single word: Cooper.
"Player, do you read me?" Carmen’s voice buzzed through his headset, static crackling over the private channel. "We just touched down near your grid coordinates. What was so urgent that you couldn't send an encrypted file?"
"You're going to want to see this in person," Player said, leaning into his mic with a wide grin. "And bring Ivy and Zack."
Twenty minutes later, three shadows slipped seamlessly through the open second-story window. Carmen landed silently on her boots, her iconic red trench coat swirling, with Zack and Ivy right behind her, catching their breath.
"Alright, hacker boy, what’s the big secret?" Ivy asked, tossing her red hair back. "You sounded like you found VILE’s master server."
Player gestured toward the open box. "Better. Look at these."
Carmen stepped forward, kneeling beside the trunk. She picked up a thick leather journal, brushing off a heavy layer of dust to reveal handwritten entries detailing impossible heists, legendary thievery clans, and a code of honor that sounded strikingly familiar.
"These records go back centuries," Carmen murmured, her eyes wide as she flipped through pages filled with blueprints of high-tech gadgets and ancient treasures. "Interpol has urban legends about a master thief named Sly Cooper, but the file was closed decades ago. They thought he was a myth."
"He wasn't a myth. He was real," Player said, pulling up digital archives on his monitors to cross-reference the hand-drawn sketches. "And according to the birth records hidden in the false bottom... my mom is his daughter."
Zack leaned over the trunk, picking up the heavy golden cane. "Wait, your mom's an ER doctor! She doesn't even like it when you pirate video games."
"She doesn't know," Player explained quietly. "She grew up in an orphanage after her parents vanished. She has zero memory of them. Her father was Sly Cooper, and her mother was Carmelita Fox—an inspector for Interpol."
Carmen looked from the blue mask in her hands back to Player, a subtle smile touching her lips. "A legendary master thief and a dedicated law enforcement officer. Sound like anyone you know?"
"The irony isn't lost on me," Player chuckled. "My dad works at the police station, my mom works at the hospital, and I'm running comms for a rogue thief. It's literally in my DNA."
"My mom spent her whole life thinking she had no family history," Player said, his expression softening. "Finding this... it changes everything. But I can't just drop a trunk of stolen legacy on her kitchen table while she's working a shift."
Chapter 2: Signal to the Mastermind
"It says here," Player continued, turning a yellowed page in the main journal, "that Sly didn't work alone. He had two core crewmates: Bentley and Murray. Murray was the heavy, and Bentley was the tech mastermind."
"Sounds like a familiar team dynamic," Ivy said, glancing over at Zack and Carmen.
Player’s fingers flew across his mechanical keyboard, typing out a custom-encrypted transmission. He embedded the original Cooper family crest signature deep into the packet headers so it would bypass top-tier firewall defenses.
“Hello Bentley. I am the grandson of Sly Cooper and Carmelita Fox. I just found the Cooper trunk and records, and I want to meet with you to find out what happened to Sly and Carmelita.”
He hit Enter. For a few tense seconds, the room was quiet except for the hum of computer towers. Suddenly, all three of Player’s monitors flickered dark. A green, pixelated turtle icon flashed in the center, followed by glowing terminal text overriding his operating system.
A synthetic, digitized voice echoed through Player’s headset. "Cooper family signature verified. Coordinates locked. Hold your position, kid—we have a lot to talk about."
The quiet back room of an understated diner served as the meeting ground an hour later. Bentley rolled in right on schedule, his high-tech wheelchair modified with an array of hidden gadgets, scanning the room before settling on the booth.
Player stood up, gesturing to the group surrounding him. "Bentley, thanks for coming. This is Carmen, our leader. That's Ivy, our heavy and mechanic, and Zack, our getaway driver. And as for me—I'm Player. The hacker and comms guy."
Bentley adjusted his glasses. "A leader, a heavy, a driver, and a tech mastermind... sounds like a familiar lineup. It's good to meet you, Player."
Player leaned forward. "Why was my mom in an orphanage, Bentley? What happened to them?"
Bentley sighed, pulling up a small holographic projector built into his chair. "Your mother wasn't abandoned, Player. She was protected. During our last major operation, an old enemy stole blueprints for a time machine. During the final confrontation aboard a temporal blimp, the engine was critically damaged. Sly and Carmelita managed to get your baby mother to safety before the ship blew, but they didn't die—they were lost in time. I left your mother in safe hands to keep her safe while I searched, but I haven't been able to pinpoint their era yet."
