Màiri
“Màiri, mi amor, what’s wrong?”
Luis sits next to me on a fallen log but I don’t look up from where my face is pressed into my propped up legs.
I don’t say anything for a moment but a quiet sniffle prompts him to pull me from my spot and into his arms.
I let him envelop me and I melt into his hold. “How’d you find me?” I say finally.
“Holly said you were upset and that you ran off to the stable. Keena wasn’t in her stall so I figured you came out here to think.”
“I’m sorry if I worried you.”
His fingers twist into my hair gently. “I’m just glad you’re okay Mar.”
A moment of silence passes and I absentmindedly trace the embroidered design on his vest.
“My mother wrote to me.”
“What did it say?”
“Da had an accident. He was bucked off a horse.”
His lips press against my hairline. “I’m sorry. Is he going to be okay?”
“Mum thinks so. She told me not to worry and to stay at school. But—“
“He’s your dad. It’s understandable that’s you’re upset and worried, but your mom’s right. You should stay at school.”
“You just want me all to yourself, mo cridhe.”
I feel him grin. “Guilty.”
Despite everything, I can’t help but laugh as I look up. His curls were damp from a shower, possibly after tourney practice and his brown eyes were sparkling. “You’re insufferable, Madrigal. But thanks for always making me feel better.”
His grin softens and he brushes some hair back from my face. “I’m here for you if you ever need me.”
I stand on my tiptoes to kiss him. “Tha gaol agam ort, Luis.”
“Yo también te amo, Màiri.”
