Work Text:
What you’ve done to me is something I didn’t see coming. Though, to be honest, most of the things you have done haven’t exactly been easy to predict.
You’re a bloody enigma wrapped in tailored suits and a smile that drives me wild. Yet above it all; the fall, your return, the rushed tear filled confession under the stars- you continue to change me in every way.
Before you, I found music to be nothing but white noise. It offered a comforting buzz as the soundtrack to my life; when I blasted the motley crew in university or listened to AC/DC played by the other soldiers when training at the barracks. But even days after we finally broached the subject I began to be drawn to melodies.
Standing in the surgery as the radio played in the waiting room I was drawn to the lyrics- ‘you and me we can light up the sky, if you stay by my side, we can rule the world’. The paperwork in my hand almost became ineligible, my mind following the lyrics rather than the words on the page.
Then when I was on the bus I couldn’t ignore the music emanating from a pair of cheap of headphones. ‘You should be mine. I should be the one who comes home to you every night. You should be mine.’
In every melody you’ve injected yourself. Every lyric, it’s you.
I want to complain but I’m already deeper than I could ever imagine.
If that’s the curse you’ve plagued me with, then so be it.
Even as I take those seventeen steps I can hear it. Your violin. The melody of your creativity. The welcome upon perfect notes… And I feel it. I want you to feed my soul with more of your melodies and drown me in music.
Perhaps tonight you will honour me with a dance to the soundtrack of our lives.
