Work Text:
The sky was unusually clear today. Nothing bad could possibly happen today, the girl thought to herself, humming a quiet tune.
The cloudless, sprawling blue expanse above and the warm sunlight beating down on her only cemented that conviction.
Still, she had to remind herself why she had come out in the first place. In a world practically crawling with villains, wandering around too long without a purpose was a surefire way to end up as someone's collateral damage.
Right, I was going to buy roses. She fiddled with the hem of her red dress as she strolled down the street. Her light green eyes reflected semi-transparently in the glass of the storefront windows.
Roses should probably be... red, right? But then again, she had bought red ones last week. It felt like it was finally time to put a new color in the vase.
Completely at ease and blissfully unaware of what was coming, the girl continued to deliberate over the flowers.
But as always, the most unexpected disasters strike on the most peaceful, warmest of days.
The jarring shatter of glass echoed alongside distant screams. Before she could even process what was happening, the ground beneath her began to split open. Her intuition, however, immediately supplied the answer. The villains are at it again.
She mentally cursed her own indecisiveness. I should have just bought the roses and gone straight home. There was no guarantee her house was entirely safe, but it was miles better than being left stranded and alone out here.
Covering her head, she scrambled toward the light spilling in from outside the collapsing building.
Acrid dust swirled thickly in the air, stinging her eyes. If she stayed put, she'd have to wait for the heroes to arrive—and it felt like the villains would definitely get to her first. With that grim thought, she used an overturned wall of the building as a makeshift foothold and pushed herself up.
"Hey!"
A voice cut through the chaos. Before she could even turn her head toward the sound, she was already being scooped up into someone's arms.
The unnaturally fast speed made her stomach drop, rendering her dizzy and nauseous as if she were strapped into a malfunctioning roller coaster.
Wait, what if this guy is a villain? Panic spiking, she squeezed her eyes shut, blinking hard a few times to fight through the blinding rush of wind before finally looking up.
It was a hedgehog, just like her. He had long blue quills, and despite the terrifying situation they were in, he had a confident, easygoing grin plastered on his face. Is he a hero? But heroes always wore clean, official uniforms, and this guy... She quickly decided not to focus on the fact that his bare chest was unusually prominent for a guy. He's a stranger, where are you looking, Amy Rose—
The girl snapped out of it when she realized the boy carrying her had finally touched down.
They were standing outside a building, safely distanced from the chaotic mess they had just left behind. She patted down the red dress she had worn especially for today and turned to look at him, still completely dazed.
"You're not hurt anywhere, right?" the boy asked, giving a quick, almost impatient wave of his hand.
Barely grasping the reality of the situation, the girl suddenly realized one undeniable fact: whatever she said to this boy right now, he was going to leave way too fast to even hear it.
"E-Excuse me, your name..!"
Still, she had to say thank you. Terrified he would vanish before she could get the words out, her voice pitched up in a breathless, hurried squeak.
"Sonic! I'm Sonic the Hedgehog!"
And just like that, before he could say another word, the blue hedgehog disappeared from her sight.
Well, at least I got his name.
Bizarrely enough, it was almost as if the universe were trying to make up for the flower shop that had been destroyed earlier. Another flower shop was right in front of her. The girl lightly slapped her cheeks with both hands and shook her head to clear her racing thoughts. The bell on the door jingled brightly as she walked inside.
A few minutes later, the girl stepped out of the shop.
She looked perfectly content as she headed home, a few stems of blue roses clasped tightly in her hands.
