Under the Shade

Summary:

Ren couldn't help but stare at Martyn once more. He couldn’t stand the silence any longer and allowed his mind to take over his body. He shuffled a bit closer to Martyn and sat up a bit to be hovering over the other. Ren lifted Martyn’s chin up with his fingers to turn to his eyes. His other hand grabbed one of Martyn’s and held him by the wrist.

“Martyn, I— look at me.”

He could hear a faint breath that drew from the other man as his blue eyes stared up at Ren’s.

“Please forgive me for what I’m about to do.”

Work Text:

“This is a nice spot. Let's sit under this tree.”

Ren's ears perked up as Martyn spoke. They both made their way under the shade and sat down next to each other. The few rays of sun peeking from the leaves made parts of Martyn's blonde hair a glimmering golden colour and his eyes a water colour blue. Ren couldn't stop looking at how beautiful the man in front of him looked in the casting rays.

“Here, I brought us some snacks if you'd like some,” Martyn said, opening the basket and taking out some containers, which included a variety of fruits. He took them out and placed them beside the basket.

Ren looked at the basket and back at Martyn. He gave a small smile to the other as he gave his appreciation, “Thanks, Martyn.”

Martyn smiled back at Ren and began opening one of the containers to eat a few strawberries. Instead of also digging in, Ren just looked at the way Martyn ate his food in front of him. A small spread of pink formed on his cheeks as he kept staring at the boy with the golden hair. If Martyn ever noticed Ren staring, he made no indication of it.

Ren turned to look at the tree casting a shadow above them both and said, “This is a really nice spot you found for our picnic.”

Martyn let out a small chuckle as he said, “Yeah, I didn't want our skin to be burned by the end of the day from the sun. Plus, there aren’t a lot of bugs in the grass here.”

Ren diverted his attention back to Martyn, who is now putting on some chapstick after he ate. His lips were a very pretty soft pink, and Ren couldn’t help but wonder how his chapstick tasted from his lips and his strawberry scented breath.

“Hey, you want some? These are really sweet”, Martyn asked as he handed Ren the container of strawberries, startling the latter with his voice. Ren looked at the other and replied, “Oh, um. No, it’s okay. I’ll taste them later.” He really wished he could taste the sweetness from Martyn’s lips instead.

“Are you doing okay? You’re like zoning out alot”, Martyn asked, tilting his head to get a better observation at the man in front of him.

“Oh no, I’m doing okay. Thanks for asking, though”, Ren laughed it off, giving Martyn a weak smile in an attempt to not show his true emotions to the other. Martyn was always a very observant person, always knowing when something was off about other people, especially Ren. They have been best friends for four years now and Martyn could just tell that Ren was quite anxious today for some reason.

“Okay then. If you have something on your mind, though, you can just tell me, you know”, Martyn replied, trying to get the other to open up.

“Yeah, yeah. You know I would tell you anything, my dude.”

“Right.”

Martyn took a final look at Ren before turning to the open park and speaking again, “Remember when we used to go here and act out random scenes we had to memorize for our play? All the other kids nearby would stare at our half-performance.” He let out a small laugh, thinking about past memories. “We barely knew our blocking, and they probably thought we were really weird.”

Ren looked at the open field that Martyn stared at, also reminiscing in his memories now. “Well, we weren’t even ready at that time! Hence why we’re ‘practicing’. It wasn’t meant to be a full production yet. Plus, I knew all of my lines and all of my blocking, dude. It was mostly you who didn’t know the scenes.”

Martyn turned to Ren with an offended look and protested, “Hey! I knew my scenes! I just… needed more practice with them, you know?”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, man.”

“It wasn’t even my fault, though! I had so many lines to memorize!”

“I literally had more lines than you.”

“Whatever”, Martyn crossed his arms and turned away, clearly very salty after losing the argument. Ren let out a chuckle at the other’s attitude, which made the other more bitter. Martyn returned his focus onto the field after releasing his offended stance and said, “Well, it’s been quite a while, hasn’t it? A lot has changed in the past years since that time. I mean, no one really comes here anymore. It’s really just us right now.”

“Yeah”, Ren replied, glancing at the field then back at Martyn. In an almost inaudible voice, he continued, “A lot has changed since then.”

Martyn glanced at Ren for a little while after he spoke, his stomach turning ever so slightly. They both sat in silence between the sounds of the trees rusting and the slight breeze coming through.

The silence was deafening. No voices, no children playing in the park, the world stood still.

His other hand grabbed one of Martyn’s and held him gently by the wrist.

“Martyn, I— look at me.”

He could hear a faint breath that drew from the other man as his blue eyes stared up at Ren’s.

“Please forgive me for what I’m about to do.”

Before the other could say a word, Ren softly kissed him on the lips, drawing a small gasp in Martyn before their lips collided. Ren could taste his cherry chapstick mixed with his strawberry scented breath, which was absolutely delicious.

But even as the kiss started, it ended just as quickly as Ren pulled back, releasing Martyn completely and starting to open his mouth to apologize. Martyn didn’t let him form a single word and kissed him back before he had the chance to say anything. The rapid contact made Ren lose balance and collapse into the grass as the other man fell on top of him. Martyn quickly placed his hand behind Ren’s hair to soften the impact of his head to the ground.

Martyn deepened the kiss and shifted himself between Ren’s legs. He used his other hand to grab Ren’s tinted glasses and place them on top of his head to not disrupt the action. His knuckles on the back of Ren’s head hit the ground pretty hard and it hurt even more from the pressure, but Martyn didn’t care right now. He put his whole focus on Ren and their intertwined mouths.

Ren’s hands traveled to Martyn’s back and let them rest on his waist. Martyn pulled back to let the both of them breathe for a second before Martyn gave Ren a small peck on the lips.

Martyn sat up, knees on both sides of Ren’s body. The latter lifted his head to release Martyn's hand from the ground. They both looked very disheveled, hair a mess and their faces filled with a spread of red across their cheeks. Neither of them said a word as the silence was filled with sounds of the two of them trying to catch their breath.

Ren took his tinted glasses and placed them on his face to get a better look at the man on top of him.

Ren noticed Martyn took more heavy breaths than him and stared back at the former's blue eyes. They both let out very airy laughs to another, still trying to learn how to breathe properly again.

Martyn rubbed his red knuckles with his other hand, trying to ease the pain. Ren sat up the most he could with the other on top of him and took Martyn's injured hand. He held it to the tip of his chin and pressed his lips on Martyn's bruised knuckles.

Martyn got off of the other man and sat beside him. Ren also sat up next to Martyn and intertwined their hands together.

“Martyn. I… I've been wanting to… honestly, I've been wanting to kiss you for a while now. I was planning on confessing to you today. That's why… I suggested for us to hangout”, Ren said to Martyn first in a low voice.

“I mean, you kind of skipped a step there. I was wondering why you weren't eating anything when you were the one who suggested a picnic in the first place”, Martyn smiled. “I guess you wanted to taste the food another way.”

Ren let out a chuckle and looked back into Martyn. “Well, now that you're mentioning it, I could really use a snack right now.”

Martyn's cheeks turned a light pink as he moved closer to Ren and smirked. He could feel his hot breath on his face. “What, want another taste?”

Without another word, Martyn kissed Ren for a brief moment before pulling back and laughed.

“Are you full now?”

Ren turned away, flustered, cheeks a bright pink and his ears perking up. He slowly looked up at Martyn, who was smiling with the most handsome face ever in the golden light, looking back at him.

Ren couldn't help but look swoon at the way the other man was staring at him. “As delicious as you taste, I can't say that I'm not still hungry.”

“Ugh fine, here”, Martyn replied as he handed Ren a container of grapes. Ren opened the container and began to eat the food in front of him. Martyn stared at him eating for a brief moment before saying, “Honestly, I've liked you for a really long time, too, so when you asked about a picnic, I was looking for signs if you liked me back. Let's just say that I found what I was looking for.”

“Was I that obvious?”

“Ren, you were looking at my lips and staring at me, zoning out every five minutes.”

“I couldn't help it, Martyn. They were such a pretty pink that I couldn't resist”, Ren smiled and touched Martyn's lips with his thumb. “And besides, you looked so effortlessly gorgeous in the sun. It was hard not to stare at you.”

Now it was Martyn's turn to be flustered as he diverted his glance to the grass to hide the pink blush on his face and on his ears. He had the brightest smile on his face.

“Stop”, Martyn said, playfully and embarrassed. He couldn’t look back at the man besides him, especially when he could feel the redness spreading everywhere across his face.

Ren placed his hand on the side of Martyn's jaw and turned his face to look at his blue eyes.

“It’s just a part of your charm, darling”, Ren smiled and kissed his cheek.

“Well, then I won’t hesitate to say how your pretty blue eyes staring at me all the time didn't make my stomach turn.”

“If you're telling me that right now, then I can't deny that it didn't.”

Martyn looked around the park and behind the tree that shade was cast upon them as he spoke, “For once, I'm glad that no one was here. It's just us.”

Ren looked around for a little while, then turned his attention back to Martyn.

“Even if there were people here, it wouldn't mean that I would love you any less”, he beamed before cupping his face and pressing his lips onto Martyn's.
