Work Text:
After a chaotic sequence of events in the darkness of the night in ski masks and a failed egging of the school’s beloved jock’s house, you sat beside Hazel in the back of the van. You and Hazel had an unspoken “more than friends” bond happening yet hadn’t uttered a single explicit confession. After the frightened squealing of teenage girls died down, the soft sounds of PJ and Josie’s banter erupted in the air to fill the silence.
Remnants of a chuckle bubbles out of your throat, followed by a yawn as you yank off your ski mask, tussling your hair into unruly waves. Hazel watched you with quiet admiration, an almost puppy dog stare.
“Tired?” She asked, still a bit breathless from the night’s endeavor.
You turned, your faces inches away due to the cramped space of the van. “A bit.”
Hazel’s eyes widen as if processing what you just told her in real time, nodding as an idea pops into her head. “You could uh.. rest on my shoulder if you want.” Flustered by her own offer, she back tracks, Or if you don’t want to, that’s cool too-”
“I might just take you up on that offer.” You whisper back as a lazy smile creeps on your face.
Hazel nods, turning her gaze back forward to avoid facing the pretty girl beside her.
Your eyes follow her movements, a beat passing before you speak up again, “Hey. That bomb you made? Pretty gnarly stuff. I’m honestly impressed.” You teased lightly.
Hazel gives a shy smirk, giving you a side glance, playing a bit more bold now, “Yeah?”
You nod, “Yeah. Takes some skill to literally blow up a car. Didn’t know you had it in you.”
Hazel bites down on her lower lip to contain her smile. She turns her head to face you. “Thanks.”
Your own smile grows a little wider, the intimate moment settling into the air. Your voice pipes up again, not wanting a single moment spared while you’re with Hazel. “Wanna stay at my place tonight?” The offer hung in the tense air. Hazel had been frequently staying over at your house since you two had started to get to know each other, anything to get away from the midlife crisis that was her mother’s post-divorce behavior and to spend time with the girl she oh, so quietly loved.
She nods.
Your expression softens as you lightly rest your head on Hazel’s shoulder, eyelids heavy with exhaustion. You can feel Hazel’s body stiffen slightly (Probably surprised) before relaxing. She even adjusted to make you more comfortable.
“Are you comfy?” She whispered quietly, only for your ears.
You tilt your head in subtle approval, letting your eyes close to the soft rumble of the van’s wheels on the road. Your pinkie finds Hazel’s and you slowly interlace it with unfathomable gentleness.
All chatter had died down by now, all the girls from the fight club tired out like a pack of wolves returning from a brutal hunt.
Hazel stayed awake despite the sleep that pulled at her, wanting to make sure you two didn’t miss your stop even though PJ would probably announce it at stadium speaker-level volume once you got there.
Like clockwork, minutes later, PJ’s commanding voice boomed, “Alright! First stop. Out of the van, y’all. 3:15 sharp tomorrow!”
PJ’s loud voice made Hazel flinch, in turn, startling you awake. You open your eyes with a groggy fashion as you sit up straight. The equivalent of the two spiral-eyes emoji. Hazel furrows her brows in apology as she turns to you, “Sorry. Sorry.” She slides out of the side of the van, patiently waiting with a hand held out to help you get off.
You take her hand, still clearly sleep-addled as Hazel closes the van door. And in record time, the van zips out of the curb like wind. You don’t waste time watching it, already fumbling in your bag for your keys.
Inside
You and Hazel make it up to your room, hands intertwined. Before you settle completely, you fish through your drawer for a pair of Hazel’s pajamas that she’d left since she already slept over so often. You hand it to her without fanfare before already undressing into your own nightwear: a baggy band tee and just your boxers. Everything was done in quiet routine, no need for useless conversation despite both of you usually being chatterboxes when together. Hazel appreciated the quiet. Better than the suffocating tension that existed in her own place.
You settle into the bed first, already pulling back the covers and climbing in. Your face smushes against the pillow unceremoniously. Hazel watches quietly, forgetting what she was doing for a brief moment. A warmth fills her chest. The possibility of a future where your lives looked like this everyday. Nights she could spend beside you in a room as serene as this one. The thought filled her with an indescribable ease, being with you outside of the dramatics of high school. Snapped back to reality, she turns away and slips on her own baggy sleep shirt.
She lays down facing you, watching your drowsy face with a familiar admiration. You open your eyes barely as you feel the weight of her body settle in beside you. You leaned in closer, capturing her lips in a lazy chaste peck. Her heart rate picks up as she feels your lips meet hers, even if as brief as a second. She watches you with astonishment, searching for the quiet permission to return your gesture.
Her voice is quiet, “can I..?”
“Mhm.” You hum in certainty.
Hazel still hesitates, but slowly moves in to gently kiss your lips, slow and lasting. No hunger. No desperation. Just this quiet moment only you two share. You move to the slow rhythm of her kiss, lazy in nature, but filled with unspoken desire. Hazel pulls back slightly and presses a small kiss to the space between your eyebrows, your eyes drifting closed in response. You shifted closer, now pressed flush against her chest, her arms automatically wrapping around you. The chaos of the night had long since shifted into this moment of quiet intimacy. Loving and sleepy.
