Grian was no stranger to perching on his friends.
he did it all the time to pearl, and had ever since they became friends. Impulse and Gem were used to it by now as well, and it only scared Mumbo a little when he lands, which is progress!
Grian had never thought about perching on Scar.
he had a method to his madness, is all! Gem had her antlers, Mumbo was tall, Pearl was flock, and Impluse had nice perching shoulders. its not to say that Scar wasn’t good for perching, its just…
it hadn’t really occurred to him that it was an option till now.
him and Scar were just messing around, like normal. of course they were, they were Grian and Scar.
and, casually, Scar said, “you know, I always wondered why you didn’t perch on me,” before going back to rummaging in his chest.
and now, he can’t stop thinking about it.
how would he perch on him? shoulder, most likely, right?
the truth is embarrassing, is the thing. Really, it kind of sucks.
when Grian first joined in season six, he was fresh out of the watchers, so Scar was like the his worst nightmare. filled with lies of ‘vex are dangerous’, and ‘players are dangerous’; mixed with his hybrid instincts of predator-run-not safe-danger-danger-danger, he didn’t go near Scar (a vex, crocodile hybrid) a lot.
first, he interacted with Cub a bit—to get him used to vex. Then around more ‘dangerous’ hybrids.
by the later part of season six, Grian was okay with Scar, great even, but…
that instinct to not perch on danger stuck.
so Grian…didn’t.
“…hey, bud?” Scar tilted his head. he had clearly been trying to get Grian’s attention.
Grian, like the idiot he was, just blurted out his thoughts. “I’d perch on you.”
Scar perked up like a dog. a dog-croc. a croc-dog. Grian would work on the name later. “Really? You’re not just offering because I said something?”
“no, I want to,” Grian laughed.
Scar then jumped down on all fours.
Grian burst out laughing. “Scar, what are you doing?”
“I’m getting ready for perching!”
“What? How does that make sense?” Grian could barely breathe between laughs and chirps echoing out. Between the nerves and the excitement rushing through at the idea of a new perch, he was a little loopy.
“well— Stop laughing!” Scar yelped, still on the floor. “I use a cane because of it anyway, so—”
“wait, really?” Grian furrowed his brows. “I thought you had chronic pain, or something.”
Scar sighed. “Yeah, partially. the pain is from being build to go horizontal in the water. mixed with the vex stuff, and my body is always mad at me.”
Grian was silent for a moment before lifting himself into the air and landing on Scar’s back.
Scar let out a loud noise of surprise. “why didn’t you warn me?”
“I told you!”
“not in the moment!”
Grian chirped back. he could feel the bird brain kicking in. he shuffled a bit, getting comfortable. Scars back had scales trailing down in (Grian had seen it enough during third life), and it made an interesting texture to stand on, even through the shirt.
He let out a loud chirp of annoyance as Scar started to scuttle forwards, and Scar just chuckled at him. “Grian, are you sure you don’t want to go on my shoulder?”
“mmm…” it was nice on Scar’s back, and there was the added benefit of letting Scar probably feel a little better, but also…
Grian nodded.
“Yes you want to go on my shoulder?”
He nodded again.
He fluttered off of Scar’s back, hovering in the air as the croc pushed himself up and grabbed his cane, standing against the wall. “Okay, come on down!”
Grian landed smoothly. Scar’s shoulders were nice. not as good as Impulse, but anyone could probably guess that. but sitting there, on Scar’s shoulder, the man quietly humming, made Grian feel ecstatic.
He started singing along with Scar, chirping in a harmony to the notes that the vex was placing down.
“Scar, have you seen—.” Pearl’s voice suddenly echoed out. It didn’t bother Grian, though; Pearl was flock. Scar was on his way. “ah, I see. you’ve been chosen.”
“He’s so cute,” Scar whispered. Grian flicked his head with his wing.
Pearl chuckled, walking over and gently stroking Grian’s wing. He let out a soft trill. “I’m surprised he didn’t claim you earlier, with how close you two are.”
“I’m just happy I get to see him all… birdy. He’s singing.”
“well, I’ll leave you to your cuddle session,” Pearl laughed, shooting back up.
Grian rested his head on Scars and started to lazily sing again.
he was with flock. Flock was safe, always. no matter what.
