Chapter Text

Harry woke in a tiny 10-square-meter room with nothing in it. There was only a table with a bottle of water and a round package of bread on it.

YOU'VE BEEN CHOSEN AS A PLAYER REPRESENTING THE UNITED KINGDOM!

YOU ARE IN APARTMENT SURVIVAL!

1. YOUR DOOR IS YOUR ONLY DEFENSE! IF YOUR DOOR IS BROKEN, YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DON'T FIX IT IMMEDIATELY!

2. DISASTERS WILL OCCUR WEEKLY!

3. MONSTERS ATTACK NIGHTLY!

4. STAY IN YOUR HOME UNTIL THE TALENT DRAW IS OVER!

5. DISASTERS AND MONSTERS ARE NOT THE ONLY THINGS YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT!

6. THERE WILL BE EVENTS TO HELP YOU GAIN SUPPLIES!

7. THE BRACELETS YOU ARE WEARING ARE YOUR INTERFACE TO THE SYSTEM!

8. YOU CAN MOVE INTO SOMEONE ELSE'S APARTMENT, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO OBEY THEM AND CANNOT BETRAY THEM! ALL YOUR RESOURCES ARE THEIRS!

9. YOU HAVE ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY WHILE IN YOUR APARTMENT! YOU CAN'T BE HURT BY OTHER PLAYERS, AND THEY CAN ONLY ENTER IF YOU INVITE THEM IN!

10. YOU CAN SCAVAGE THE CITY DURING THE DAY FOR SUPPLIES! BUT THIS CARRIES ITS OWN RISK!

YOU'RE BEING LIVESTREAMED TO EVERYONE BACK HOME!

So much information. Harry thought as he looked around the room. Annoying, really, but he learned what he needed to know.

TALENT DRAW ACTIVATED!

Harry held his breath. Generally speaking, his luck was a double-edged sword. Bad luck followed by good. So which one would this be? It could really go either way.

SSS-POTTER LUCK

"Sod off!" Harry huffed. "I want to file an appeal! I was born with that Talent! So what are you going to do, double the bloody effect?"

Harry didn't care that he was being livestreamed to everyone back home; this wasn't a fair draw.

YOUR APPEAL HAS BEEN RECEIVED!

COMPENSATION HAS BEEN ISSUED!

TALENT DRAW RECOMMENCING!

BLIND BOX TALENT!

"So I get to open blind boxes every day?" Harry hummed. "My luck is so going to ruin that as much as possible."

YOU STILL HAVE YOUR BORN TALENT!

"Sod off." Harry sighed in annoyance. "Fine."

OPEN YOUR INVENTORY FOR YOUR NEWBIE GIFT PACK!

He did as instructed. There wasn't much. 3 Gold Coins and x8 Wood. He hummed a bit and noticed that the door had a yellow exclamation point on a screen in front of it. He walked over and touched it.

DOOR LEVEL 1

DURABILITY: 3/3

UPGRADE: 3 GOLD COINS, X8 WOOD

"You gave me just enough to upgrade the door?" Harry muttered. "Upgrade!"

After a 30-second countdown, a flash of bright white light appeared. When it cleared, a much sturdier wooden door replaced the old one, equipped with a peephole.

STURDY DOOR LEVEL 2

DURABILITY: 10/10

He looked around the room; there wasn't much, but his next target was getting the wood and glass to upgrade that boarded-up window.

BLIND BOX DRAW!

TODAY'S WIN!

COMMON RESOURCE CARD X1

COMMON RESOURCES NUMBER LINKED TO PLAYERS IN AREA!

He was soon holding a white card in his hand.

"Huh?" He wondered. "Activate!"

A flash of white light and piles of resources appeared. x100,000 Bottles of Water, x100,000 Bread, x100,000 Wood, x100,000 Metal, x100,000 Glass, x100,000 Plastic, x100,000 Wool Cushions,  x100,000 Wooden Lounge Chair Blueprint.

"Uh, hello." Harry mumbled. "Okay, that's great." He walked to the window and touched the screen in front of it. There was a before-and-after picture. "So, when I upgrade this, it'll just be fully covered in wood. I didn't even need glass? Whatever, do it."

His window changed after a brief wait and suddenly had 5/5 Durability.

"See, viewers, most people would stop at just upgrading the door and window and call that defense. I'm not most people, and my life has taught me to be very paranoid and trust no one." Harry spoke to the invisible cameras filming him. "I'm upgrading the entire room."

He touched and upgraded all four walls using wood, then did the same for the floor and ceiling.

HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!

FULLY UPGRADE ROOM TO LEVEL 2!

TITLE AWARDED!

PARANOID PLANNER!

PERMANENT STAT UPGRADE

+2 STR

+2 DEX

+2 STA

+2 INT

+2 WIS

APARTMENT BONUS:

+2 TO ALL DURABILITY!

Harry smirked. That was more like it. It was a bit odd that he could actually feel the stat boosts, though.

A REGION-WIDE ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE MADE!

PLEASE CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER NICKNAME!

Harry thought about it for a bit. His mind kept going back to the same thing, though. His dad was a Stag, and his mom was a Doe. So he was a fawn, but fawn wasn't cool. He eventually came up with the nickname.

"Bambi." He answered. "My nickname is Bambi. The deer prince."

ATTENTION:

BAMBI THE DEER PRINCE HAS ACHIEVED THE HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT OF FULLY UPGRADING THEIR BASE TO LEVEL 2!

AWARDED:

X1 BRONZE CHEST!

"Okay, that one was on me." Harry sighed. "I should have just said Bambi and left it at that."

He shook his head. He frowned at the two chests in front of him.

"Why two, system?"

YOU WERE THE FIRST TO UPGRADE YOUR DOOR TO LEVEL 2!

Oh, that kind of made sense as well.

Harry looked around again and frowned; there was nowhere to sit. They gave him a table but no chair. He used one of the blueprints to make a wooden lounge chair. He placed it and put cushions on it. He then sat down. He was told that this restored +8 Sta or Stamina per hour. Before the cushions, it had only recovered +4 per hour. Progress. He was also informed that room comfort was a stat.

Room Comfort:

3

So his lounge chair brought the comfort up to 3. Interesting. He stretched out. He pulled the chests to him. Two of them. Then he stopped and decided to check out the other functions that he had access to, starting with the shop.

STORE REFRESHED!

"The game just started; why is it refreshing?" Harry wondered. "That makes literally no sense."

1. WATER X1 PRICE: 500 COPPER COINS

2. DRY BREAD X2 PRICE: 50 COPPER COINS

3. RELATIVELY SHARP AXE X1 PRICE: 1 GOLD COIN

(100 COPPER COINS = 10 SILVER COINS = 1 GOLD COIN)

"That's just robbery." Harry muttered. "Charging that much for water. I could shortchange you by selling my own water." He seemed to think. "I'll need money to upgrade the door, won't I? So why don't I do that? I've got plenty. I'll think about it."

He turned his attention back to the chest in front of him.
