Going Insane

Summary:

After one of his failures, Mr. Milverton goes insane and Ruskin has no other choice but to keep him restrained even if it breaks his own heart.

Work Text:

"I am sorry, Mr. Milverton." Ruskin said to his employer with great sorrow in his voice. "But I have no other choice left. I need to do this - but this is for your sake! Please, understand this!"

"Ruskin, you know that the boss doesn't understand anything anymore. Or currently, even hear." Harry, the bodyguard, cruelly cut into the secretary's speech. "That's why we need to restrain him. He is dangerous to us and to himself as well ever since he went insane. Not like the boss wasn't always crazy."

"Don't talk about him like that!" Ruskin lashed out and clenched his fists. The situation was hard to bear even without Harry's remarks, which no one asked for. "Mr. Milverton is not a madman. He just needed to take too much stress recently and this went to his mind. Failing his latest evil plans... got him sick like that." He finished the sentence after a little pause while the sorrow flooded his soul. He just watched Mr. Milverton who was lying in front of them in the bed. He was given tranquilizers so he would not fight against what Ruskin and Harry needed to do.

Restraining him before he can harm himself or the people around him.

"He was always sick if you ask me." Harry shrugged his shoulders. "He kept talking about himself like he was the incarnation of pure evil, the Devil himself and kept bringing up that Bible story. Yeah, I get it, I enjoy hurting people too, it's fun - but there is something wrong with those who think of themselves like that. The boss gave me the creeps with those speeches." Harry peeked at Ruskin and he thought that it was not safe to continue. Poor fella. It must be extra hard for him. He was always head over heels for the boss. "We should get on with this, Ruskin, and restrain him before the tranquilizer wears out. We already talked this out." He added, to convince Ruskin before he changed his mind. "You can only protect him like that."

Ruskin slowly nodded and turned his head away from Mr. Milverton's face. He knew that Harry was right.

"Then... we can start." He said in a soulless voice and took up the restraints that they already placed next to the bed.

They were able to finish the job before Mr. Milverton woke up. Harry was somewhat amused by the situation, but he hid his smile so the broken Ruskin would not see it. The secretary kept standing at his restrained employer's bedside and he looked like he was about to cry. Harry thought that maybe it was better to leave Ruskin on his own with his boss, but before he stepped out of the room, he needed to make sure of one thing.

"Remember, Ruskin. It is for the boss' sake." He reminded him. "You can't let him out, under any circumstances - or you put him in danger. No matter how much he begs you, do you understand?"

Ruskin nodded. He seemed like he barely heard anything from what Harry said. Harry decided that he would come back to check often whether Ruskin listened to him or not. He was relieved when he finally left the place.

Ruskin remained on Mr. Milverton's side. The other man was still knocked out from the strong tranquilizers. Ruskin's heart was aching that he needed to see his beloved employer in this state. Of all people, it needed to be his precious Mr. Milverton...

He reached out and started to pamper the man's curly hair while the tears were running down on his face. It felt like he was the one who was tied - he wished that he was the one. He was aware that he needed to brace himself for what was about to come. He was determined to stay with Mr. Milverton, even if his employer was in this state... but he needed to be strong enough to be able to say no. Those golden eyes can’t have effect on him. He can't let him out - even if it completely shatters him inside.

Ruskin kept crying. He pressed his wet cheek to Mr. Milverton's forehead and gave a kiss onto it.

"Get better soon, sir." He whispered. "You need to get better."

If he knew any prayer, he would have prayed so his employer's sanity would come back soon enough. Because imagining that he would be here, restrained for the rest of his life...

Maybe even death would be better than that.
