Work Text:

The sun had set, and the warm humid air had taken a slightly cooler edge. The only sounds in the small field were the rustling of animals, but that was perfect for the couple lying on a blanket under the purpling sky. Silver Vanrouge rolled to the side to look at his lover, loving the way the light of his hair played across his pale face in the growing darkness.

“Do you think we’ll be able to see them? I mean…what if they don’t come out? This feels stupid…Is this dumb? Maybe we should go back and do the event again…”

Silver looped one flaming strand around his finger and brought it to his lips, marveling for the hundredth time that it didn’t burn. A smile flickered over his lips when the tips flared pink for a moment.
“It’ll be fine, Idia. I’m sure we’ll see some.”

As someone who had grown up spending most of his life outside with animals, Silver had been appalled that Idia had never seen a firefly in real life. Of course, he’d seen them in anime, and in games, but when Silver had compared the way the glow of his hair intensified when they were together to a firefly, Idia had confessed to never having seen the real ones. After he had lost his brother he had been obsessed with building Ortho a body…and then he had never really been one to go outside much.

It had been Silver's turn to plan a date, and he’d decided to kill two birds with one stone. Bring Idia out into the nature that he loved at night, when there would be less chance of people triggering his anxiety…and show him fireflies.

As his gaze flickered over his boyfriend Silver smiled. He knew they were an unlikely pair; the boy who had grown up in the woods and mountains of Briar Valley, and Idia who had been surrounded by technology and metal most of his life. But they worked.

They had gotten close, ironically due to Lilia’s insistence on Silver playing video games with him. Silver had been struggling with a dungeon in-game while Lilia was with Malleus in Briar Valley after his Overblot.  After nearly losing Lilia, Silver had wanted to do something to connect them again. Unable to ask his father for help, he had gone to Ignihyde, as it was a well-known den of nerds and gamers.

Idia had been the one to answer his plea for help, and Silver had started visiting the introverted dorm leader to play with him.
His curse had come upon him while he was there, and he’d awoken tucked into Idia’s bed while the other curled up in his gaming chair playing something complicated.

Somehow, that had changed things, and they’d started getting closer.

Now, they’d been together for months, and he was more than glad Idia had traveled back and forth for his internship.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by Idia’s hand clenching on his arm. He followed the taller man's gaze to the darkness surrounding them to see a small glow flicker in, then out. It was swiftly followed by another.

“See. I told you you wouldn’t scare them away.” He pressed his lips to Idia’s temple as he watched more and more fireflies light up the air around them.

“They’re like stars…” Idia said softly, then tensed. “I’d say if I was totally lame. They’re pretty though. Almost feels like VR the way they’re never in the same place twice.”

Silver’s lips spread in a smile as he watched the wonder on Idia’s face. He lay back, bringing the protesting man with him. It really was like being surrounded by living stars blinking in and out in the darkness.

“Relax and watch, Idia,” He shifted to kiss Idia’s neck, the adoration in his gaze turning to something a little less innocent at the gasp that elicited.

“You know why fireflies light up?” Silver murmured against Idia’s pale throat, punctuating his sentence with a soft nip.

“I…Idk. To scare away predators?”

Silver grinned as Idia’s hair brightened, the pink tinge bleeding from the tips to halfway up his hair.
“That’s one reason…another is to communicate with mates or attracting potential mates…”

His hand moved to rest on Idia’s chest so he could feel every hitched breath as he left small bite marks on the pale column of his throat.

He felt Idia giggle nervously as he rolled to face him.

“So am I trying to attract a potential mate?” the introverted gamer asked, golden eyes a mix of mischievous and insecure.

Silver moved quickly, hands sliding up Idia’s inner arms to pin his hands above his head, fingers interlocked.

“You had better not be trying, my little firefly,” Silver said softly. “Because he has already found you.”

Idia looked up at him, golden eyes wide and soft for a moment before a snicker bubbled from his chest as he looked away. “That was so corny, 100% fail, not enough hearts to proceed.”

Silver’s smile didn’t fade; he was used to Idia’s taunts, though some did come off as mean from the outside.

“Is that so…Then I should probably leave.” He pretended to get up only to find that Idia’s fingers refused to untangle from his.

“Sorry, the logout button has been disabled. Who knows? Maybe I like cringe lines from pretty boys who sleep too much. Does that make me lame and in love? maybe. Does it mean I’m into somnophilia? Possi—”

Silver shut him up with a kiss, a laugh bubbling up. When he knew they were alone and there was no chance of interacting with anyone but Silver, Idia was blunt, intelligent, and a bit of a pervert.

Silver loved that.

There was no sound from the blanket for some time except for soft sighs and the sounds of lips moving together until…

“Silver?”

“Yes?”

“You have a firefly in your hair.”

“Does that mean you want to move inside?”

“No…It means you have a firefly in your hair. This is the closest I’ll ever get to the final chapter of ‘Love Illusive’ where they make out in a field of stars..there’s even an ecchi dlc patch”

“...I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You will. You brought me outside to see fireflies; next date is my choice.”

“...Idia…Why are you cackling like that?
