Work Text:

Moonlight washed over the school rooftop, giving a silver glow to its empty floor. Well, almost empty, except for two boys standing at the edge, looking over the wire railing at the open skies. They talked about nothing and everything, spending time like two normal friends, for once (though their conversation included too much talk of magic for two normal boys). The words drifted into a comfortable silence, the stars their companion as DJ and Superfish leaned against the wire railing.

"Have you ever wondered what it feels like to fly?" DJ asked idly, messing with a loose thread on his jacket.

Superfish smirked. "Some of us don't have to wonder."

The glow of Superfish's magic remained as breathtaking as it was the first time they met. It surrounded him in sparkles as he lifted off the ground and beyond the railing, bouncing in the air as if it was nothing. If he didn't know angels were real creatures on their own, DJ would've thought Superfish was a being descended from heaven.

"I forgot you can do that..." he murmured, looking at Superfish in absolute wonder.

Superfish had always enjoyed all eyes on him. When everyone looked at him, he could prove that he was talented, worthy of his stay. He could prove that he was willing to go too far to improve. He could prove that he wasn't the defective son of a traitor witch who fell in love with a human.

DJ's eyes held only fondness for the tricks Superfish performed, regardless of how powerful they were. With him, there was nothing to prove. He never knew how much of a relief that could be.

"What does it feel like? To fly?"

It's like walking, just in the sky. The wonder in DJ's eyes held him back from saying that. "Why don't you come and find out?"

DJ's face twisted into confusion before promptly turning to shock when the same green aura surrounded him, lifting him in the air. "W-Woah!" He flailed helplessly, almost falling right back on the rooftop floor.

Superfish, the asshole, laughed at him, watched him thrash for a moment before deciding he'd had enough. "Relax, it's just my magic. I'm not gonna drop you on purpose."

"What if you make a mistake!?" DJ cried out, glancing at the distance he was from the ground.

"Don't worry." Superfish smiled, something amused and fond in his eyes. "I won't let you fall."

He waited for the just-for-the-core comment, but it never came. Superfish offered his hand, the gesture completely free of lies. DJ's breath caught in his throat.

"Just trust me."

DJ took his hand.

Superfish pulled him off the building, hands intertwined as DJ adjusted to letting the magic take him. His feet were far above the city, Superfish and his magic the only thing tethering him to reality. He had felt the night air before, but it was entirely different to feel the cool breeze far up in the sky, his own body light as air.

Superfish tugged their intertwined hands, catching his attention. He pulled them through the air, guiding DJ as they stepped on nothing, bouncing through the sky. DJ's breath came faster, the fear and adrenaline making it so he didn't feel scared at all—he could only see Superfish.

"Can people see us?" DJ asked, though he already knew the answer to that.

"No, I cast an invisibility spell." Superfish pulled his wrists gently. "It's just us."

Those words were more comforting to DJ than he knew. He could trust Superfish—if nothing else, he knew that doubtlessly. He followed Superfish farther away from the school building, moonlight gleaming on their path in the sky, hands intertwined as DJ became acclimated to the situation.

"This is just like walking..." DJ looked down at the ground, far, far beneath his feet, and turned a little green. "Nevermind."

Superfish laughed, a sweet sound that made DJ smile. "Don't look down if you're squeamish." He grasped DJ's chin, tipping his face up to meet his eyes. "Just look at me."

Everything he said served to fasten the beating of his heart, worsen his blush until he couldn't speak. His hand was warm and soft. Too close, they were too close, and if DJ fell right now, he couldn't think of a better way to go.

"You're so..."

Superfish smirked—he had to be doing this on purpose. "I'm so what?"

DJ simply threw his arms around him in a hug. Not expecting that, it took Superfish a moment to catch up and hug back, or at least hold him tight enough to reassure him that he won't fall. The night air rustled their clothes, the city beneath them moving as usual, but for them, this moment was frozen in time.

"I'm glad we met," DJ murmured, the words as soft as his touch when he brushed his hand through his hair.

In contrast, Superfish held him tightly, like he could disappear right before his eyes. "So am I," he whispered, the first time he let himself admit the truth.

Notes:

i imagine here superfish has already realized he has feelings for dj but is too scared to act on it,, but he can't help himself from keeping dj happy and close to him all the same
