Chapter 1: I knew you’d be at the party

Chapter Text

Coy

"Come on Coy! We’re gonna be late!" Hanbon says from the other end of the line.

Coy looks in the mirror and scrunches his hair one last time before turning towards his phone. “I don’t know Bon. What if Anthony’s there.”

“Well of COURSE Anthony is going to be there. Will is literally his best friend. Come on, it’s been almost 7 months since you guys broke up. Plus there’s gonna be plenty of people there, so there’s actually no way you’ll spot him in that crowd.”

Coy rolls his eyes in disappointment. What if I want to see him. “Ugh fine. I’ll be out in a sec.”

Bon hangs up as Coy takes one last look in the mirror. He’s wearing baggy jeans, a green Amazon basics t-shirt and the belt Anthony gave him for his birthday last year.

He grabs his phone from the bed and slips into his back pocket before reaching for the door and heading out to the hallway.

He hears Bon honking outside as he ties his shoes. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” He whispers to himself and scurries out the door.

Anthony

Will is standing in the kitchen making some un-godly and unproportionate mix of coke and Bacardi with an underground artist blasting over the speaker system.

“Hey is Hannah coming?” Anthony asks with faux nonchalance as he pretends to check his phone.

Will snorts a tipsy laugh. “Yeah. And Coy.” He glanses over his shoulder at Anthony with a smirk.

“Omg I broke up with him in November. Get over it.”

“Do you think he’s still like depressed? Or is he feeling better?” Will asks as he goes back to pouring and mixing.

Anthony is suddenly actually busy texting someone. “Uhhh… Hopefully the latter.” He says, without really paying Will any attention.

Will looks at him and laughs. “Who are you texting?” When Anthony refuses to respond he puts down the red solo cup, walks towards him and peeks over his shoulder.

Bon: pls just try to talk to him. i rly miss hanging out as a group of 4.

Anthony: r u srsly gonna guilt trip me into this?

Bon: oh come on, we both know you 2 aren’t finished with each other just yet.

Will let’s out a laugh in agreement, which suddenly makes Anthony aware of his presence.

“Hey!” Anthony starts, but gets abruptly interrupted by Will’s laugh.

“Come on, man. People will be arriving soon.” He says as he throws one arm around Anth’s shoulder and drags him out to the hallway.

Coy

Coy nervously looks over at Hanbon, who’s sitting in the drivers seat. The car is parked further up the street, since Will’s driveway is packed with other cars and scooters.

"You’re aware that we’re already late, right?” Bon glances over at Coy who’s fidgeting with his phonecase.

“What do i say if i meet him? What if he’s like, actually over me? What if he already has someone else? Omg, what if it’s a girl.” Coy throws his head backwards in annoyance and disappointment.

“No more whining. Let’s go.” Hanbon says and gets out of the car.

Coy rolls his eyes, but opens the car door and follows after her. He hears the beep from the car locking and the keys clanking as Bon stuffs them in her pocket.

She’s wearing a high waisted layered denim skirt, a white tank and a pink velvet jacket.

Coy’s brain is moving at a hundred miler per hour as they walk down the street towards the white house at the bottom. Their pathway is lit by the stars and the rare lamp post every now and then.

As they make their approach towards the house, the music pumping gets significantly clearer.

“Audrey Hobert?” Bon suggest and it takes Coy just a few seconds to realize.

“What the fuck, it’s actually her. There’s no way that Will is in charge of the music.” Coy laughs and Hanbon joins him.

The door is ajar when they arrive and they can see tons of people dancing in the purple-ish glow that fills the living room.

In the kitchen there’s a few people from school, but Coy doesn’t greet any of them. He’s on a mission to find Anthony. Hanbon ends up joining the kitchen-group, so now Coy’s on his own.

He stands in the doorway of the kitchen, stretching to reach his maximum height to be able to look over the crowd. He can’t se anything but a bunch of heads with a bunch of different hairstyles.

He rolls his eyes and sighs before stepping into the crowd.

Coy had been to Will’s house before, back when he and Anthony was dating and they used to hang out as a group. He’d seen the house in broad daylight and knew how to navigate it, even without being sober.

He pushes his way through the mob of stinky high schoolers and makes his way towards the white, carpeted stairs. There’s a few people there already, but Coy doesn’t care and finds an empty seat.

From here he has a great overview of everything and it feels like he could spot anyone from this place. Anyone. Even Anth. Anth. Coy shakes his head. Anthony, he concludes.

Suddenly the steps behind him creak, and down come those icy eyes Coy could spend forever looking into, closely followed by two intertwining hands. The hands of Anthony Potero and Thea Booysen.

Coy feels his stomach drop and quickly turns back around. His gaze is now drilled into his knees as the tears prickle at his waterline.

Thea whispers something to Anthony and laughs, clearly being everything but sober, but Anthony doesn’t respond. He’s busy trying to ignore the guy in the Amazon basics t-shirt that’s blocking half the staircase.

Coy closes his eyes tightly and try to focus on the lyrics of the song playing. The one he knows so well.

“Sue me, I wanna be toxic.”

“Gonna blow up your life like atomic.”

A whiff of a smell he knows all too well drags him back to reality. The smell of that soft vanilla perfume, mixed with alcohol and a faint smell of weed. A smell that brings him right back to that night in November.

“Come on, Coy! I can’t do this anymore. It’s not supposed to feel like this! We’re supposed to be happy.”

“We were happy, Anth. I’m still happy, I just don’t know what’s happening anymore! My life feels like it’s out of control.”

Anthony looks up at Coy and gives a sad shrug, his shirt almost see through in the heavy rain.

“Well that’s affecting me now, and I don’t think that’s how it should be.”

He opens his car door and sighs before ending the conversation.

“Good bye, Coy.”

Coy feels his heart rate spike as the waterworks behind his eyes turn on. He stands out there for a while, soaking up the bad weather and thinking about everything he could’ve done differently.

Coy reminisces back to that night as he watches their figures disappear and melt into the crowd.

Anthony

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK.
