Work Text:

Two girls walked side by side, each carrying their own empty basket.

The sky was dark, but the streets were brightened by spooky and exciting decorations as far as the eye could see. Kids walked down the streets with their friends and caretakers, holding buckets filled with various sweets. The sidewalks were lined with expensive houses, some bright and decorated, others dark and unthemed.

A dark gown hung loosely over Max's shoulders, the mask that she wore every Halloween propped up on the top of her head. "C'mon, let's go to that house." She led El toward a lit up home that resembled a small mansion. "The guy that lives there always give out good candy."

El, clad in her squirrel costume that she'd bought from Spirit Halloween, absentmindedly followed Max down the sidewalk toward the house. "What do I say?" Her voice held uncertainty. This was her first Halloween, and she'd rather not mess it up.

The porch creaked as both girls stepped up onto it. Max pulled down the mask over her face. "Just do what I do." She pressed the doorbell.

El nodded and held up her bucket, just as Max was.

The door swung open, revealing a middle-aged man holding a bowl of large candy bars. He smiled kindly at the girls.

"Trick or treat!" Max exclaimed, holding out her bucket for the man.

"Yeah, trick or treat!" El copied, holding out her bucket in the same way.

"Hey, Ghostface! And a squirrel!" The man briefly shook the bowl as he held it out in front of them. "Go ahead, take the one ya want. I got plenty."

Max made the first move, reaching for a snickers bar and placing it in her basket. El looked into the bowl, unsure of which one to pick. She decided she'd choose a snickers as well.

"Hey, would it be alright if I could grab one for my brother?" Max asked. El glanced at her, confusion briefly crossing her face. "He wasn't able to go trick or treating this year."

"Aw man, that sucks. Course ya can." The man waved his hand, signifying that it was no big deal. The confusion on El's face turned to understanding.

Max reached back into the bowl and took out a kit-kat bar, dropping it into her basket. "Thank you!"

"Thank you!" El copied, though it was with genuine gratitude.

The man nodded with a smile. He retracted the bowl as he grabbed the door to close it.

The two girls stepped down from the porch, continuing their journey. Max pulled up her mask, revealing a grin that matched El's current one.

"See, I told you this would be fun!" Max lightheartedly nudged her elbow into El's arm.

El giggled and pulled back just slightly. "I know, I'm a natural." She Jested, a little more pep added to her step.
