A beam of light fell onto the slums. Momo, who was in his apartment, noticed the brightness coming through his window and stepped outside. He put his hand under the sunlight, feeling the sun for the first time. (Well, as much as a companion can feel anything.) He looked up to see that the roof of the city was opening.
The little outsider did it. She opened the city. Momo had never imagined that a cat and a little robot could accomplish so much. At the same time, though, he knew they could do it. There was nobody else in the entire city that could do what they did.
He threw his arms up in celebration, exclaiming happily, before running back into his apartment and down to the elevator to find Doc. They hadn’t spoken to each other much since he returned from the Dead End, it was too awkward. He was sure Doc would ask him why he hadn’t gone with Clementine and Zbaltazar, which was something he didn’t want to explain. How was he supposed to tell one of his closest friends that he was too cowardly to go with the rest of their friends to fight for something they all believed in? That he couldn’t get himself to take any kind of risk for something (or someone) he cared deeply for? So instead of facing his friend, he had been avoiding him, spending his time in his apartment or at the bar.
All that left him though, when he saw the first sliver of sunlight beam down from the opening city roof. He didn’t care anymore. His, and all his friends’ lifelong dream had finally come true. He needed to see them. He needed to see him. Despite Momo’s avoidance, he desperately missed Doc.
As he approached the elevator, he saw Doc standing there among several other companions. Without thinking he ran up to him and hugged him as hard as he could. Doc was shocked for a second, but hugged him back just as hard. It seems he missed Momo too. They stood there like that for a few minutes, with the other companions around them climbing up to a rooftop for a better view or staring in disbelief.
Momo pulled away first, but they never left each other’s eyes. Then, faster than Momo’s circuits could process, Doc grabbed his head and pulled him in for a kiss. Momo could only stand there in shock for a moment, before kissing him back and setting his hands on Doc’s waist. Companions can’t exactly kiss the same way humans could, but they still do it as a way to express love for one another.
They pulled away from each other simultaneously this time, but still held each others’ gaze. Momo looked surprised, while Doc was smiling warmly.
“I thought about doing that the whole time I was stuck in the Dead End,” Doc said, “I was so mad at myself for not doing it earlier. I thought I would die without ever being able to tell you. I’m so glad I was wrong.”
“I thought about it the whole time you were stuck as well,” Momo replied, smiling, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Under the sun, they kissed again, not noticing the companion walking up to them from behind Momo.
“Papa, isn’t it amazing? I can’t belie-” Seamus stopped once he saw his father, “. . . I knew it.”
The two pulled away from each other, and Doc looked behind Momo to see his son standing nearby, smirking at him. Somehow he knew he would never stop teasing him for taking so long. He wasn’t sure if Seamus knew before, but he definitely knew now. Doc ran over to hug his son, almost as happy as when they were reunited. “We can finally see the outside,” He said, pulling away from the hug.
Seamus laughed, “Yeah, you, me, and your little boy toy over there,” he said, gesturing to Momo, who was blushing deeply and avoiding eye contact.
Doc laughed with his son, “Us and all the other Outsiders.”
“How are we going to get up there though?” Seamus asked both Doc and Momo.
“Maybe we can get the elevator back up and running again. I have the plans for the defluxor and the power to make it work, we can get into the gears and find out what’s wrong with it,” Doc said, turning towards the now empty elevator, “We’ll have to clear out the inside first though.”
“Good idea, we can ask Elliot to help too. I’m sure we can convince him somehow,” Momo chimed in, seemingly having recovered from the initial embarrassment.
