Work Text:
“Hey kid, what’s up?” Tony pauses his typing when the only thing that comes through the phone is quick breaths.
“Peter? Did you and Strange not handle the little multiverse ripping stuff?”
Tony doesn’t know. Peter looks around at the wreckage of his life and realizes that Tony doesn’t know. He’s been in isolation working on his arm, told Peter to keep him updated because he’d be cutting himself off to get more work done.
Tony doesn’t know it’s all falling apart.
“Hi-hi Tony,” and that really gets his attention, “uhm, we’re handling it. I just, jeez this is harder than I thought it was going to be.”
There’s some yelling in the background and Tony tries to listen, strains to hear the words being said.
“You’re going to forget me.”
“What?” He’s taken off guard, blinks at the wall he’s staring at and then starts to stand, summoning his suit. “Peter what’s happening?”
“You’re going to forget ever knowing me, in order to fix this.. everyone has to forget Peter Parker.”
“Kid that-“
“There’s no other way, Tony.” His mask clicks into place and the wall starts to tilt forward, opening for Tony to leave.
“Of course there is. There’s always another way, I hate magic. I can’t forget you. Peter that’s not an option.”
“It’s the only option, hey, it’ll be okay. You won’t even know what you’re missing.” Tony nearly chokes at the halfhearted attempt at a joke.
“And what about you? What about-about-“
“I’ll be okay. You won’t know any different.”
“It’s you, Peter. I’ll always know something is wrong.”
There’s a wounded sound at the other end of the call and Tony almost feels bad.
“You’re making this really difficult..”
“Then don’t do it. We’ll figure it out.”
“I can’t, I have to. It’s already happening, there’s no… no stopping it.”
“It’s…Peter no. You can’t-“
“I love you.”
He freezes, hovering only two feet off the ground.
“What.”
“I love you, Tony. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry for-“
“Shut up.” An audible click of a jaw. “I’m coming to you.”
“…No, you aren’t. You don’t even know who I am.”
~
Fuck, his head was pounding, it felt like someone had reached in there and shook it around looking for something only to put it back.
Tony shakes his head, trying to dispel the ache and looked around. He was at the compound, fully suited up, and hovering above the ground.
Why was he…?
He floated in a full circle before gently touching back down.
“FRIDAY, why am I suited up?”
“You were on your way to Queens, Boss.”
“Queens… what could I possibly care about in Queens?”
“No idea. Would you like to disengage suit?”
“Please, baby girl, I need to finish the upgrades to this arm.”
