Jeonghan surfaced from a dreamless sleep slowly, the soft morning light filtering through the bedroom curtains a gentle warmth on his face. For a moment, he simply lay there, enjoying the familiar comfort of their bed, the lingering scent of Joshua’s cherry blossom and honey, mingled with his own sandalwood and rain. It was a comforting symphony that usually meant Joshua was curled against him, a warm weight pressed to his side.
But this morning, something was different. The space beside him was cool, empty. Joshua wasn’t there.
A faint prickle of unease, barely perceptible, stirred Jeonghan’s alpha senses. It wasn’t alarm, not yet, but a subtle question. Joshua was an early riser sometimes, but usually he left a note, or at least a kiss on Jeonghan's cheek. Today, there was just an absence, a quiet hush.
Jeonghan pushed himself up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He inhaled deeply, trying to pinpoint Joshua’s scent. It was there, soft and sweet, but it seemed to emanate from the living room, a little more potent than it should be for just waking up. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, the cool floor a jolt against his bare feet.
He padded silently towards the bedroom door, then down the short hallway that led to their open-plan living area. As he rounded the corner, he paused, a soft smile blooming on his face, a warmth spreading through his chest that chased away any lingering sleepiness.
Joshua was there, indeed. But he wasn’t just there. He was nesting.
In the center of the living room, sprawled across the plush rug, was a truly magnificent creation. It wasn’t a haphazard pile; it was a carefully constructed haven, a fortress of comfort and scent. Every single one of their favorite blankets had been pulled from the linen closet, a cascade of cashmere, fleece, and knitted throws, all meticulously arranged. Pillows from the sofa and spare bedroom were tucked in, forming soft walls and inviting hollows.
But what truly made Jeonghan’s alpha heart swell was the other material woven into the nest. His t-shirts. Not his clean ones, but his worn ones. The faded, soft cotton shirts he wore around the house, the ones that had absorbed his scent over hours of wear. His old band practice hoodie, a soft grey one with a frayed cuff, was draped over one side, acting as a kind of canopy. A white tee, with the faint scent of coffee from yesterday morning, was carefully tucked under a fluffy blanket. His ancient, beloved t-shirt from their first concert together, worn thin with countless washes, was placed lovingly in the very center, almost like a throne.
Joshua was crouched in the middle of this soft, scented paradise, his brow furrowed in concentration. He was holding one of Jeonghan’s flannel shirts, the dark blue one he always wore on chilly mornings, slowly folding and smoothing it, his fingers tracing the worn fabric with an almost tender reverence. His own scent, usually a delicate cherry blossom, was amplified, thick and sweet with contentment, but also tinged with a faint, almost imperceptible undertone of longing.
Jeonghan watched him for a long moment, completely captivated. He could feel his alpha purring deep in his chest, a powerful wave of protectiveness and adoration washing over him. This was Joshua, in his purest omega form, driven by an instinct as old as time itself, seeking comfort, seeking security, seeking him.
"Shua?" Jeonghan finally murmured, his voice soft, not wanting to startle him.
Joshua jumped, his hands stilling on the flannel shirt. He looked up, his eyes wide, a faint blush creeping up his neck. He looked like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar, despite being a grown, mated omega. His cherry blossom scent spiked slightly with mild embarrassment.
"Jeonghanie! You're awake!" he exclaimed, a little too brightly, before his gaze dropped to the nest. "I… I didn’t mean to wake you."
Jeonghan walked closer, his eyes still sweeping over the nest, appreciating the intricate detail, the obvious love and care Joshua had put into its construction. He knelt at the edge of the blanket pile, his own sandalwood scent beginning to fill the space more completely.
"It’s beautiful, my love," Jeonghan said, his voice laced with genuine awe. He reached out, gently touching the soft fabric of a cashmere throw. "You’ve been busy."
Joshua’s blush deepened. He picked at a loose thread on the flannel shirt. "I… I just woke up and… you weren't there. And I missed your scent. Really badly." He finally admitted, his voice a quiet whisper. "So I started… gathering things. All our soft things. And then your shirts. They smell so much like you, Jeonghanie. It just felt… right."
Jeonghan’s alpha purred louder, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated through his chest. He reached out, gently taking the flannel shirt from Joshua’s hands and placing it carefully into the nest. Then, he took Joshua’s hands, intertwining their fingers, his thumb stroking the sensitive skin on Joshua’s wrist.
"My sweet omega," Jeonghan murmured, his eyes full of tenderness. "You don’t ever have to miss my scent. I’m right here." He leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to Joshua’s forehead, then his temple, then the delicate skin above his scent gland, breathing in deeply. "You always smell so good, but the longing in your scent… it pulled me right out of bed."
Joshua leaned into the touch, his eyes closing, a soft sigh escaping him. The proximity to Jeonghan, the direct infusion of his alpha scent, was already working its magic, easing the subtle ache in his chest. His own scent settled, becoming purely contented, sweet and rich.
"It just felt like… like I needed to be surrounded by you," Joshua confessed, his voice muffled against Jeonghan’s shoulder. "Like I needed a little fort, made of everything that smells like home. Made of you."
Jeonghan pulled him closer, his arms wrapping around Joshua’s waist. "Then let me join you in your fort," he chuckled, his eyes gleaming with affection. He gently urged Joshua to shift, and then, with a soft grunt, he settled into the nest himself, stretching his long limbs out, making himself comfortable amidst the blankets and shirts.
Joshua instantly gravitated towards him, curling into Jeonghan’s side, resting his head on his alpha’s chest. Jeonghan’s arms came around him, pulling him flush against his body. He felt the strong, steady beat of Jeonghan’s heart, heard the low rumble of his breathing, and was enveloped by the warm, comforting cloud of his alpha scent.
"Is this better?" Jeonghan asked, his voice soft, his lips brushing Joshua’s hair. He began to stroke Joshua’s back, a slow, rhythmic motion that melted away the last vestiges of Joshua’s restlessness.
"Mmm-hmm," Joshua hummed, already half-asleep again, utterly content. He buried his nose deeper into Jeonghan’s shirt, inhaling his familiar, beloved scent. The nest, filled with all their cherished comforts and Jeonghan’s potent scent, was now complete, and Joshua felt utterly safe, utterly cherished.
Jeonghan shifted slightly, pulling a thick fleece blanket over both of them, tucking it snugly around Joshua. He rested his chin on Joshua’s head, closing his eyes, letting his own alpha instincts soak in the profound peace of the moment. His omega, nestled safely in a handmade haven of his own making, finally feeling completely secure and scent-saturated.
"My beautiful, nesting omega," Jeonghan whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You never have to miss my scent, love. I’ll always come to you. Always fill your world with it."
Joshua sighed, a deep, satisfied sound. He was right where he needed to be. In the heart of their home, in the center of a nest built from love and longing, wrapped in the arms of his alpha, breathing nothing but his scent. It was perfect. And for now, that was all he needed.
