Work Text:

At last, the day was over. Sauntering into his living room, Medkit slumped onto the sofa, completely drained. He checked his phone to see if Sword had messaged him. After all, he had mentioned he'd wanted to hang out sometime tonight... though he might have to reject it. There was absolutely no way he would leave his apartment after how much he had to deal with today.

Medkit tossed his phone on the floor, groaning in irritation. Why must his life be this way? He didn't get a chance to spiral, as the doorbell suddenly rang.

'You can't be serious.' thought Medkit, utterly exasperated. He forced himself up anyway, as it was probably Sword coming to ask him in person instead of texting or calling (he's just one of those people).

"What do you need, Sword?" he muttered, opening the door slightly.

When there was no response, he peeked through the crack.

Well, it certainly wasn't Sword. Face concealed under a dark helmet with sharp blue accents, it wasn't difficult to differentiate him from inphernals residing in Crossroads. Panic settled in Medkit's chest. What the fuck was a Blackrockian doing in front of his apartment? A mercenary, no less. How the hell did they find his house? He didn't have nearly enough time to prepare. However, trampled under his racing thoughts, he already knew the answer.

-

A few months ago, Medkit had been running an errand when he had come face-to-face with the mercenary. His throat tightened. Did they figure out where he was hiding after all this time? There was no other answer than that. This was it. His life was over as he knew it. The medic knew there would be no chance of escape, as he barely made it out the last time.

However, a strong curiosity gnawed at his mind. It wasn't like a soldier from Blackrock to just walk up to him in the open, in broad daylight no less. Ignoring his better judgement, he decided to engage.

Hyperlaser spoke slowly. "Medkit, was it? You're the traitor Subspace's after."

Just the sound of his ex-coworker's name was enough to make him shudder. He took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts, before speaking to the soldier. Despite it being their first time meeting (not to mention their circumstances), he felt a small sense of trust between them. Trust?...No, that couldn't be it. Medkit shook it off immediately. He was simply showing a bit of interest, that's all. There was no reason to feel a connection towards someone like him.

Their conversation remained vague, as none wished to share too much. Then, pair promptly said their farewells. It would be more pleasant for Medkit if they were to never meet again. This would not happen again.

-

And yet, one short conversation was all it took for Hyperlaser to track down where he lived. Medkit opened his door all the way, not breaking eye contact with the mercenary. It wasn't like he could just shut it and be done with the interaction. God, why was he here...?

"What brings you to my front door, Hyperlaser? Assigned to kill me this time?" Medkit made an effort to match the mercenary's indifferent demeanor, but he couldn't keep the fear out of his voice.

Hyperlaser merely shrugged. "Just wanted to stop by."

'Stop by? What, like they were friends?'

Medkit scoffed. "Really? You're a soldier. What are you really here for?"

Hyperlaser was unaffected by the medic's attempt at coldness.

"I was hoping we could revisit the talk we had a while back. I'm interested in your perspective, you know." The inphernal brushed off his coat. "You're not obligated to accommodate me if you'd prefer it that way."

-

Somehow, Medkit was now sitting on his couch. Next to the soldier. The one he so desperately wanted to deny entry to. For SFOTH's sake, what was Medkit thinking? He pensively eyed the helmeted inphernal.

Medkit wanted this guy out of his house as soon as possible. But though he wanted to cut off this conversation and ask him to leave, a part of him couldn't bring to just yet. It must have been the glimmering curiosity this rare occasion proposed, and nothing more. Nothing at all.

"So, he really did give you a difficult time. Subspace, I mean. I understand why you did what you did." Hyperlaser crossed his arms, easing himself further into the couch.

Medkit clenched his fists, trying to keep his voice steady. "Tell me what you're actually here for."

The soldier turned to Medkit, observing his furrowing brows.

Medkit's expression hardened further. "I know you didn't come here to be my therapist. Tell me why you came."

Hyperlaser paused. Medkit felt a sort of hesitation coming from him, as if searching for the answer. The mood shifted strangely, and the wrong kind of tension began to arise.

The mercenary didn't break his stare.

"I wanted to see you."

"...Pardon?"

No. This was all wrong. Medkit's face had no reason to flush. This was... what the hell? He must've misheard... oh god, what? An awful feeling of warmth blossomed in his stomach. He could feel his own heartbeat beginning to accelerate. What the fuck was happening?

Hyperlaser suddenly slid his gloved hand under Medkit's chin. Holy shit. Medkit's thoughts fizzled out. He could sense Hyperlaser's deep gaze penetrating through his helmet, feeling his glare caress his every feature. Medkit breathed shakily, freezing under the soldier's touch.

Beads of sweat rolled off of the medic's face. Hyperlaser's other hand made its way to his thigh. Fuck, he was practically in his lap at this point.

Medkit couldn't think. His mind was shrouded in heavy smoke, dulling his senses. His vision was filled with the glass of Hyperlaser's helmet. Medkit swallowed, and the distance between their faces began to close.

The moment was over as soon as it had begun. The medic was released from his grasp, leaving him a trembling mess on the sofa. Hyperlaser quickly stood up, fixed his coat, and bid him farewell. Medkit said nothing, his mouth dry. He stared at the door even after it had clicked shut. He heard the distant buzz of his phone. The living room still lingered with the leftover tension from their exchange.

Farewell, he had said.

Until next time.
