Work Text:

Bucky hasn't slept this well since.. probably before the war, to be honest. Even in Wakanda, even when he knew he was safe, both from himself and anyone else, he was still plagued by nightmares.

However, Bucky's been staying at Sarah's for a couple nights, and in that time the nightmares have been scant. The first night, he nearly woke up screaming, but it's night three now, and not only was there no nightmare tonight, but he even dreamed. An actual, positive dream. Bucky doesn't even remember the last dream he had. He knows exactly why he dreamt too.

He can't be bothered to open his eyes and check, but he's pretty sure Sam's still asleep. Bucky slept in his bed last night, as opposed to the couch he'd been on for the last two. It's soft. Too soft for him, if he's being honest. But considering he's been sleeping on the floor for the last year, even the couch is a little too soft.

Bucky hears Sam's breathing shift, he's waking up. He rolls over, squinting his eyes open against the light pouring in from the window. The sun's still rising, painting the room, and Sam, in yellow. It makes him look ethereal, Bucky's never seen anything like it, anything like him.

He doesn't think he ever will. He watches as Sam brings a hand up to his face, rubbing lazily at his still shut eyes.

"Mornin'," Bucky mumbles.

Sam's eyes shoot open as soon as the word leaves his mouth. Bucky practically sees the cogs turning in Sam's head, as he remembers that he did, in fact, invite Bucky into his room last night. Eventually, he responds, "hey, Buck."

His voice is rough with sleep, and, possibly, one of the most gorgeous sounds Bucky's ever heard. Definitely, actually. Which is a high bar, but he's pretty damn confident with his ranking.

Sam seems to take Bucky's silence as a cue to keep talking, because he adds, "sleep well?"

And Bucky did. Yeah, he really did. "Yeah, actually." He smiles a little as he says it. Then, because apparently he lacks filters in the morning, he says "I dreamt."

Sam grins instantly. Big and wide and all for Bucky. It makes Bucky feel all soft inside. Which is a very dangerous thing, given their line of work, but he can't seem to want it to stop.

"That's great, Buck," Sam says, "seriously."

"Very great," Bucky agrees.

Sam hums. "Yeah."

"I should get something for it, I think." Bucky smiles wider now. That's another new thing. Bucky doesn't really smile much anymore, or he didn't until he came here. Even with Steve, before he abandoned him, Bucky couldn't find it in himself.

Sam rolls his eyes, though he shimmies over nontheless until he's leaning over Bucky. Bucky's smile widens as he stares up at his man, waiting as patiently as he can.

He doesn't have to wait long, fortunately, because Sam leans down, placing a quick kiss to the corner of Bucky's mouth. Then the opposite corner. Then, finally, his lips press directly to Bucky's own. It's soft, slow. Everything Bucky can't remember ever having, everything he hasn't allowed himself before now.

Sam pulls away sooner than Bucky would have liked. If he weren't so very comfortable, Bucky probably would have chased him. Instead, he just watches Sam settle back down beside him, head resting against Bucky's shoulder now as he starts dosing off again.

Bucky can't even be disappointed. It just means he has an excuse to stay in bed, with Sam, longer. Who could be upset about that?
