Michael olise, change of direction for his brand Véloria
‘I have dreamed of being a fashion designer since i was a kid.’ Michael olise tells us the moment the interview starts. ‘It became an obsession at some point, i was always sketching in class. Creating new clothes, even trying to make them at home with what i had.’ he softly laughed counting the old memories.
Did you know that you would go this far ?
‘Yes.’ He told us straight in the yes. ‘People will call me arrogant again after that, but, i knew what i was made of and what i was capable of. My mom always told me; if i worked hard enough and with dedication, i would go far, i always had the talent and the vision for that kind of things. It was just a matter of when will people know my name rather than if.’ muses Olise, whose confidence didn’t falter once when explaining his reasoning. As for if his self-confidence ever harmed him, he reveals ‘I didn’t have many friends when i was young. Maybe two or three. People found me too weird, too quiet and didn’t want to hang out with me - in a way my love and my talent for designing was all i had to prove myself to others. I am where i am today because of my mentality, if you don’t believe in yourself - especially as a kid, your path will be harder than it was meant to be.’ The franco-british declares.
You’re talking about being called arrogant. Online, a lot of people mention this but also mentions you being self-centred and even mean at times. Other mentions that they’re calling you that because you do not represent the “traditional omega” image. Do you believe that your sub-gender plays a role as well in this image created of you by the public?
Michael lets out an amused exhale before answering. ‘Most definitely. Since i was young i didn’t really meet the physical aspect of what an omega looks like, so when you add the fact that i was confident in myself and my work, i immediately was called arrogant and even nonchalant when i didn’t overdo my reactions on some achievements.’ He paused. ‘People don’t like when omegas are doing better than they should in their eyes. Even if i represented the perfect omega they would still find a way to be mad and call me unfitting and undeserving of this work industry that is Haute Couture. I’m someone with emotions, with a personality, i have friends that i share good laugh with. I have people that i love and that love me. I go out a lot as well. Unfortunately i, and many other omegas in this world, have to build this armour where i don’t let anything in or anything out. The moment that i do, whether it be people online, journalists or even people from this industry, they all use it against me one way or another. If i have to be called arrogant and everything else in the book to live in peace and to keep showing other omegas in the world that it’s possible to attain big spheres without being an alpha - then so be it.’
As you said, many young people, especially omegas, look ups to you. Do you feel a pressure because of all those eyes on you ?
‘of course. But it’s my job. As i said, i want to show other omegas that dreaming big isn’t something silly like they want us to believe. When i was younger, i didn’t have many omega celebrities to look up to, especially not that were like me. Not very frail, not small, not innocent looking. And it’s not their fault. It’s the society’s responsibility. They only put forward individuals that fitted the criteria of the “traditional omega”, many created insecurities or saw their dream shattered. If, at my scale, I can inspire omegas of all ages, then i’ll take the responsibility on my shoulders. I want to be the kind of person you can look up to that young me would have loved to have.’
We know that, unlike most haute coutures rands , you don’t do two official collections a year but once and this one is rather special. How do you see this new collection ?
‘It’s a renew,’ for the first time the designer smiled broadly. ‘Véloria represents who i am, but it’s also a way for me to express everything i went through. Today Véloria needs to be renewed. It always had its own visual, its own identity if you will, but as every person does, we change and mature as time passes. I think it’s the time for her [the brand] to be a new version of herself.’ He confesses. ‘I don’t want to create just to create. There are years where my creativity leads me to having two or more collections, and there are years where i prefer exploring new ideas, new designs - i’m a perfectionist to the core. I want to be satisfied and i want to know that i explored every ounces of the itches a new project gives me. I don’t want this new chapter to just be a simple collection. This year is dedicated to her.’
Are you saying it’s going to be a complete different identity ?
‘Yes and no. At the end of the day, it’s still me, it’s still my world so the depth will be the same and i’m happy with the main style i’ve been showing to the world since 2021. But the new collection is something that i haven’t tried before. I wanted to test my limits and my imagination, and while my style is mostly streetwear and hip hop, i know that i’m capable of more. My creativity is far from limited, i just need to use it in different ways to let it expresses itself.’

I’ve spent the last few days trying to find the right words, but the only ones that come out are thank you. I have had such an unbreakable support for my family, friends, boyfriend, but especially my fans over the last few years.
I knew my path in this industry wouldn’t be easy, that i would face many obstacles on my way but seeing so many people encouraging me and appreciating my art gave me hope. I know that i represent a role model for many omegas out here who dream to be someone outside of their sub-gender, and this award is for all of you. To all who want to work in fashion, who want to be an engineer, who want to be a doctor, who want to teach, who want to be a scientist, who just dream, you can do it. You’re as talented as any betas or alphas existing in this world, you are not less than them and we will keep proving it.
Véloria embodied the dream that 5-years-old me had. It’s my first and most precious project, and seeing so many people understand it fills me with joy. It represents to the world what i cannot express myself, and it’ll keep doing so until i can no longer sketch.
