Work Text:

Almost all of day shift has left. Good for them. I’m still here. Worrying and hoping that Robby decides to come back in one piece, and yelling at the local police chief on the phone trying to find out where Jesse is.

I need to find out where he is so I can get him home. “Ma’am I do not know anything about ICE. I would call them,”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. I’m going to strangle someone. “I did, and they told me to call you,” he hangs up. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

I place my phone down on the counter hard enough that Abbot looks up from the computer. “That didn’t sound good,” he comments.

“Yeah, well I’ve had a crappy day. If you’ll excuse me I have to call ICE again to see if I can find one of my guys,”

I abbot places a hand on my shoulder. “Stop. I’m not going to tell you to go home, because I know you won’t listen but you need a second,”

“Every second I take is another second we could lose Jesse to the system,” I argue.

“Listen, I might know someone who can help. I’ll make a few calls,” he says, I Ignore him and pick up my phone to call whoever ICE receptionist is going to pick up.

“How can I help you?”

“You can help me by telling me where Jesse Van Horn is,”

“Ma’am I am not able to give the information about a detainee,”

I let out a laugh. “A detainee? Is that what he is now? A detainee? For trying to protect a patient? Really? Because this is how I see it one of my nurses was getting between someone who was trying to hurt one of his patients and went to push him back which is exactly what we are supposed to do and then you detained him for that reason,”

“It sounds like he assul-“ I interrupt her.

“Assaulted? He assulted an armed man with a bullet proof vest on? I promise there is nothing Jesse could have done to hurt that man. So you either help me or transfer me to someone who will,”

Then she hangs up on me. Everyone is just hanging up on me today. This great.

Damnit.

I run a hand through my hair.

Unless… I get on my phone and look up who the head of the nearest detention camp is then I find out that his wife is Hispanic.

Good. Something I can use.

I find the number to his office. His secretary answers. “How can I help you?”

“I need to speak to your director,”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,”

“You listen here, tell him if doesn’t want me to call and say his wife is an illegal then he will talk to me,”

“Is that a threat?” She asks.

“No, it’s a guarantee,”

A minute later I’m transferred to the director. “I’m going to say this once. You have one of my men who did nothing wrong. We have the footage to back it up. So you will release him,”

“Or what?”

“You’re wife will end up in whatever detention camp you decide to send my nurse to,”

“Is that a threat?”

“Yes, sir it is,” there’s a long pause.

“Send the footage,” it takes a while but within three weeks Jesse is released from custody and the first thing he did was get interviewed by a reporter and told everyone everything.

You mess with my people you mess with me. End of story.
