Work Text:
The morning sun cuts through the heavy drapery of the small bedchamber in the Rauhensteingasse cottage, illuminating a silent battle. Ludwig sits hunched over the mahogany writing table, a quill balanced precariously between his ink-stained fingers. Before him lies a pristine sheet of music paper—utterly, mockingly blank. The staves stretch across the page like iron bars, keeping his thoughts imprisoned. He taps the feather against his chin, his brows knitted in frustrated concentration, but no melody comes.
The silence in the room feels heavy, punctuated only by the shallow, uneasy breathing of his husband resting in the bed behind him. Yesterday had marked their first official anniversary, a day that should have been spent in celebration, but a sudden bout of illness had left Wolfgang bedridden, frail, and pale.
A quiet groan breaks the stillness. Ludwig instantly abandons his quill, turning his head toward the bed. Wolfgang stirs against the pillows, one hand pressed tightly over his stomach as another wave of pain ripples through him. Nausea paints his features in tight, exhausted lines, yet as his blue eyes flutter open and catch Ludwig’s troubled gaze, he forces a faint, weak smile.
"Still... staring down the white beast, Luddie?" Wolfgang rasps, his voice thin and threadbare from the strain.
"It refuses to yield a single note," Ludwig grumbles, rising from his chair and crossing the room to sit on the edge of the mattress. He reaches out, gently brushing a stray, damp curl away from Wolfgang’s fevered forehead. "The ink dries on my pen before I can even catch a theme."
"Then do not chase it," Wolfgang whispers, gasping softly as his abdominal muscles clench. He takes a slow, grounding breath, fighting through the discomfort, desperate to offer comfort in return. "Listen... to what is already here."
Ludwig tilts his head, confused. "Here? There is only the sound of your discomfort, Wolfie. I cannot compose when my mind is consumed by your suffering."
Wolfgang weakly reaches up, clutching Ludwig’s hand and placing it directly over his own pounding chest. Beneath Ludwig’s palm, the rhythm of Wolfgang’s heart beats steady, quick, and alive. "Then let that be your tempo," Wolfgang suggests softly, his thumb tracing the back of Ludwig's knuckles. "A syncopated measure... two beats of pain, resolved by one of relief. Listen to the cadence of my breath. Turn my agony into your allegro, mein Schatz."
Ludwig stares at him, deeply moved by the older man's stubborn, beautiful devotion. Even in the grip of illness, Wolfgang's mind naturally translates the world into harmony. The agony of the blank page suddenly melts away, replaced by an overwhelming urge to capture the resilience of the man he loves.
"You are mad," Ludwig murmurs fondly, bending down to press a soft, lingering kiss to Wolfgang's warm cheek. "Utterly mad."
"Only for you," Wolfgang breathes, closing his eyes as the nausea finally begins to ebb. "Now... go write."
Ludwig returns to the table, taking up his quill once more. He lowers the nib to the paper, and this time, the ink flows. Inspired by the quiet strength resting in the bed beside him, he begins to write—each note a testament to their endurance, their bond, and the love that carries them through the darkest hours.
