Work Text:
Riddle had been sending out the invitations, thinking nothing of it. He was rather excited to marry Ace, and while they had only been dating for a few months now, they had known each other for years and felt they were ready to take this next step. They had moved in with each other right after Ace graduated, they had adopted hedgehogs, marriage was really just the next step.
Ace had just wanted to send out a mass invitation via text, but Riddle preferred the old fashioned way of pen and paper, so he wrote out each invitation and sent them on their way. He was excited to ask Trey's family to cater the desserts, and for Trey to be his best man. Last he heard from Ace, his fiancé was planning on holding a tournament with his friends to see who claimed the title? Riddle personally had his (theoretical) money on Deuce, but he might have been a bit biased.
All that's to say, Riddle wasn't expecting his phone to blow up a few days after he sent out the invites. He had…40 missed calls from Cater!? What on twisted wonderland was so important that Cater called him 40 times!? Was someone hurt? Was Trey hurt!?
Riddle quickly dialed Cater, ignoring the hundreds of text messages. He had to quickly pull away from his phone when Cater's voice came loudly through the phone. “MARRIED? RIDDLE? TO ACE? WHEN WAS THIS A THING!?” Riddle carefully put the phone back to his ear, and spoke hesitantly towards his excitable friend.
“Yes? We had been living together for a few months now, and are aware we're moving a little faster than most couples, but-” Riddle tried to explain calmly, only to receive another shout through the phone.
“WHAT!? YOU TWO ARE LIVING TOGETHER? SINCE WHEN!?” Riddle then heard some mumbling from the other side of the line, only picking up bits and pieces. It was better to let the other tire himself out when he got like this, Riddle would not be able to get a word in until he was done.
Another few minutes of mumbling, some shuffling, and finally, silence. “Am I allowed to speak now?” Riddle asked dryly. He received no response, so he continued to explain. “As I was saying before, we had already been living together for a few months after Ace had graduated. He was happy, I was happy, and we figured that after dating for nearly four years now, we were ready to fully commit to this relationship. Any questions?”
Cater heaved what was probably the most dramatic sigh Riddle had heard in a while (he lived with Ace Trappola, king of dramatic sighs, of course he has heard more dramatic ones), and spoke in a much softer voice than he had been previous. “Well, I certainly have a few, but I'd rather we talk about it in person. You, me, Trey, and Acey, this Saturday for lunch?” Riddle nodded before remembering the other couldn't see him. “Ah, yes. That sounds agreeable. Does 14:00 work for you?”
“Yes. See you then. Oh, and Rids?” Riddle hummed back, wondering if Cater actually did have a question he wanted to ask. “I'm happy for you. And Acey. Really, I am.” Riddle smiled at that, gave his thanks, and hung up.
That lunch was full of revelations. Apparently, no one had known that he and Ace were dating for their entire time at Night Raven College. They weren't even hiding it! And yet, somehow, no one had caught on.
And Ace did have his friends fight for the title of best man, and Riddle had his guess that Deuce would win proven right on the day of their wedding. His husband was a silly, silly man.
But he wouldn't have it any other way.
