It was late, it always kinda got late. It was the life that they had as vigilantes. Crime didn't sleep after all. If anything it was more active at night than it was at day.
There had been a fight. And tho peter and him had managed to get the criminals tied up and ready to be caught by the police Matt felt like he could drop. His senses were being a mess and his head felt cloudy.
Peter he was tired as well. but, not to the same extent.
Matt sat down on the roof and took a deep breath trying to will away the brain fog. He still needed to get home. Hell's Kitchen wasn't that close to queens unfortunately.
"Matt"
He startled at the sound of his own name and looked up to see the kid. "Pete, what's wrong?'' It was a honest question. He couldnt figure it out at the moment. His head was not working with him. He was still getting sensory input. His brain was just having problems with processing it all.
"I came to ask that'' peter said taking a spot next to him.
"You seemed kinda out of it, and normally youre on your way to Hell's Kitchen i, i just wanted to make sure you werent bleeding out or something''
Peter was tugging on his heartstrings and had no clue he was doing it. And Matt couldnt help but smile at the fact. "Im okay, im not bleeding out" Matt mumbled leaning his cheek on his hand. "Just-"
"Matt"
"Matt can you hear me?"
A hand on the shoulder startled him out of whatever haze he was in and he tried to concentrate on the voice. "Sorry kid, it's been a long day" he finally admitted. Which earned a slight Chuckle.
"God, you almost gave me a heart attack" he got up and extended his hand "come on, we'll find DeWollf, i got an idea"
Matt took his hand and got up with his help trailing behind the younger hero until they had found DeWollf.
He wasn't fond of the idea of them walking through a street full of cops, but the cops didn't bother them. As long as it stayed that way it was fine. Besides that he trusted peter enough to let it happen.
When they got to the right car he just kept behind peter. After all he had no idea how DeWollf would react to seeing the devil of Hell's Kitchen.
"Captain DeWollf, i got a. I got a question if you don't mind"
She turned around to see them both, that much Matt could tell. Nothing beyond it would process for him at the moment unfortunately.
"Spider-man, what can i help with" her voice, it was oddly soothing, very maternal in a way that Matt didn't quite know how to take. He figured it was because of peters age. Most people could tell he was pretty young.
"Okay so," peter pulled him to the front and he nearly fell over but the kid made sure he didn't. "Him"
"You're gonna have to be more specific Spidey"
"He's practically wiped out, can he, take a nap in your car, Hell's Kitchen is pretty far from here"
"You're asking me if daredevil can take a nap in my car?" She didn't sound offended, Matt had thought she would but if anything there was some humour behind her tone. And honestly he couldn't really blame her. It was ridiculous.
A nodd from the kid, a beat of sillence and then.
"Kid, he needs a bed if hes that destroyed, not a car seat"
Oh,thats something Matt had not expected, but it sounded good. He knew it was risky but god, he just wanted some sleep.
Before peter could awnser she spoke up again. "You two get in the car, were going to my house, ive got a guest room, there are two beds, you two both can rest"
And just like that, he was siting in the back of a cop car. Peter being in the front since he knew her beter. Matt yawned and leaned his head back. The car was warm, unlike the harsh cold night and there was soft chatter from peter and the captain as he explained to her how the fight had gone down. And as the car began to drive, his eyelids slowly got heavier until they shut and he fell asleep.
That left only peter and DeWollf he looked at the captain feeling immensely great full. "Thanks for helping us captain, i had no clue who else to ask, he nearly fell asleep while we were talking, i think he might've actually fallen asleep." Peter said.
He was worried about his friend. And sure Matt was older than him, but Matt was also just a regular human. Well- he wasn't entirely regular due to his heightened senses. Peter knew that. But he wasn't bitten by a spider like peter. He didn't heal as fast, couldn't stick to walls, couldn't shoot webs. Didn't have a spidey sense. Though, from what peter remembered his hearing made up for that, he noticed far before peter that something would head their way.
"It's no problem kid" she looked into the rearview mirror at him. He was sitting eerily still in the backseat. "Is this normal for him?" She asked looking for a moment more before looking back at the road.
Peter was a little confused until he took a look into the rearview mirror as well "he's asleep'' peter answered softly.
He held his hand up to stop her for a moment. "We gotta speak softly,"
This earned him another confused look from the cop.
"He has hearing that goes beyond the car" nothing too detailed but detailed enough to make sense by the looks of how DeWolfs features softened. "Must be hard to fall asleep" she finally said.
Peter only nodded. He had known Matt for a while. And most of the time him falling asleep, was out of pure exhaustion.
"Alright, what's the plan to get him inside" DeWolff asked after a beat of silence.
Peter took a moment to think it through and settled on the safest option. "Carry him in, let him sleep" peter said. As they got out of the car DeWolff was about to get Matt. But peter stoped her.
"Best if i do it, he knows me"
"He's knocked out I'm sure its fine kid"
Peter shook his head. "Your heartbeat is unfamiliar, so is your smell, I'm concerned his senses will wake him''
That earned him a surprised look.
Peter picked up Matt who gave not one sign of waking up. And the tention in him disappeared. He had hopped Matt wouldnt notice being relocated. And he didnt. Once inside he followed DeWollf to the spare room she had talked off putting him on one of the beds.
Going back to the living room with her after. "You alone tonight?" There was concern there that shouldnt come from someone in their late 20s but she didnt comment on that. Instead she smiled and nodded.
"The kids are at a sleepover. Which is probably for the best, teens can be loud" she said while thinking about the earlier conversation between them.
"Hmm" is all the reply he gave. He was glad they werent there at the moment. Less to risk the chance that Matt would wake up.
He woke up and the first thing that hit him was the smell of the cotton sheet. Mat listened closely and could count 2 heartbeats in the house. One familiar one less so. He sat up slowly and focused in on peter who was thankfully well.
Matt slipped out of the bed and grabbed his mask slipping it back on. There was a lot he needed to figure out about last night. But his focus was mainly on whoever was in the kitchen making coffee. This was gonna be an interesting morning.
