A Taste of Home

Summary:

The Farmer has a homemade surprise for Ryis.

(Prompt: Fresh Bread)

Work Text:

“A gift? For me?” Ryis asks as the covered basket is passed over to him. A broad smile breaks out across his face. “I wonder what it could be?” he muses, though the unmistakable scent of warm, yeasty bread clings to the basket. Eagerly, he lifts up the towel that's trapping the warmth within and a small cloud of steam wafts up from the basket along with the most delectable smell. A half-dozen golden rolls, baked perfectly, are nestled in the basket alongside jars of butter and blackberry jam.

He beams at the gift. “You made all of these on your farm? That's incredible!” He covers the rolls back up. “You know, I was just thinking I needed a break; care to join me for a snack?”

You both sit down on the bench by the eastern pond and Ryis excitedly digs into the basket. The crust crackles delightfully as he breaks open the roll and smears butter and jam on it, the two spreads melting and mingling into the fluffy crannies of the warm, airy bread. He takes a bite and closes his eyes as he chews, humming with delight.

“Wow! It reminds me so much of my mother’s, how she'd cook up fresh rolls for me and my father on rainy days.”

You know; you had Balor seek out her bakery and deliver a letter to her once you and Ryis began dating so you could give him a taste of home.

“I feel like I've been transported home again!” he continues before taking another bite of bread.

You lean over and steal a bite from his roll.

“Hey!” he calls out with a chuckle. “Get your own, there's plenty more in the basket!”

You smirk before leaning in again. This time he is prepared and he moves his bread away from you, but your goal this time isn't the bread. Instead you give him a smooch on the cheek, leaving behind traces of blackberry jam. A shy smile teases its way onto his face and as you pull back he follows, kissing you on the lips. It tastes of blackberries, butter, and fresh bread, of course.

“Thank you,” he says solemnly when he finally pulls away. “You make my days special.”

“So do you,” you reply, your hand reaching out for his. The two of you sit and hold hands as you enjoy the bread on this perfect spring afternoon.
