Chapter Text

The plan is created during the winter break after an objectively horrible first season with Ferrari.

Which is to say, Lewis isn’t really thinking straight when he suggests it to Nico. And well, Nico is quite bad at saying no to Lewis, especially after seeing how the season affected him, so when his husband wakes him up at 6 a.m. on a Sunday and says, “I want to come out.”

Nico is more awake than he has ever been in his life.

What follows is a three-hour discussion, in which Nico has to ask Lewis multiple times to at least give the new car a chance before he goes crying retirement, followed by an hour-long conversation with Angela, four emails sent to the Ferrari PR team, and two meetings scheduled for mid-January.

By the end of the day, they have the vague outline of everything that is to happen during the season, with a plan A if the car sucks, and a plan B if it doesn’t (Lewis insists that the car being shit is the more likely option and as such should fall under plan A; Nico rolls his eyes at him).

Winter break passes, pre-season testing passes, and suddenly the new Ferrari isn’t looking all too bad. Lewis reluctantly tells Angela they’re going with plan B, but to be ready to switch if needed.

────────────────────────

The season starts, and with it Phase One of their plan: The Distraction.

With some carefully choreographed and staged paparazzi pictures, suddenly every media outlet is speculating about Lewis Hamilton and Kim Kardashian dating.

As much as Nico doesn’t necessarily like her, he is very grateful that she’s agreed to be a pretend girlfriend for half a year; even though he knows she’s probably doing it to better her own image.

P3 in China marks the first time one of them mentions the other and also cements that they’re fully committing to plan B. Nico has to bite his tongue not to say “I told you so”. After all, it’s only two races into the season, so it’s still very early to tell.

Japan then brings along the first opportunity for more paparazzi photos with Kim, and the first Instagram “soft-launch” (a term Nico was briefed on by a 20-something-year-old Ferrari intern during one of their meetings).

Miami is where they start Phase Two: Nico randomly showing up at the race.

It’s not that it’s uncommon for Nico Rosberg to be in the paddock, but if all goes as planned, he will be there much more than usual. And really, it’s fully a coincidence that he had a sponsor thing in Miami he agreed to months ago that they decided to take advantage of.

So on Sunday, Nico shows up to the paddock in a red shirt and pants and hangs around the Mercedes hospitality, mentioning Lewis once or twice, making sure it's caught on video.

He can’t make it for the Canadian GP, so they switch tactics, and Lewis is the one mentioning Nico unprompted in an interview to keep up the intrigue (Twitter eats it up as usual).

With five races behind them, the 2026 season has more than begun, and Lewis Hamilton is clearly battling for a title this year.

June 7th, Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco is a weird one.

It’s unofficially Nico’s home race, and he’s in attendance as always, except he has to sit on his yacht and watch as his husband takes P2, only to kiss another woman after the podium.

Nico hopes the people around him attribute the green tint to his skin to seasickness and not the very obvious jealousy he feels. He has to keep reminding himself it’s all for show, has to touch the ring on his left hand and count down the hours before the celebrations are over and the space in bed next to him is occupied again.

“I’m posting the Insta dump tomorrow,” Lewis tells him once they’re done with their own private celebration and are tucked in bed. Nico only hums in response, snuggling closer to his husband in a weirdly possessive way.

“One of the pictures is of Kim holding my helmet,” Lewis continues, very cautiously. That makes Nico pause. He untangles himself and props himself up on his elbows to look at Lewis.

“Well, it’s as we discussed, right? The “hard-launch” or whatever it was called,” Nico says, trying not to show his disdain for it.

“Yes, it is, but I still wanted to check in with you,” Lewis says, left hand moving to cover Nico’s. “Someone may have mentioned something about you looking quite uncomfortable during the celebrations today.” He’s stroking Nico’s hand with his thumb, and looking at him with an apologetic look in his eyes.

“It’s nothing, Lew, really.” Nico sighs, flopping down again, and burying his face in Lewis’ neck. “It’s just not a nice feeling to see my husband kissing one of the most famous women alive.” He grumbles.

“And believe me, I’d much rather be kissing you. That’s the point of this whole thing. So that when Vegas rolls around, if I get on the podium, I get to kiss you and break the internet.”

“You’re most excited about being a trending topic on Twitter, then?” Nico smirks and looks up at him.

“Obviously,” Lewis laughs, moving to leave a soft peck on his lips.

“It’s not that long until summer break, and you know that’s when the real fun begins. And besides, you’re doing the podium interviews in Barcelona, right?” Lewis asks, and Nico once again hums in agreement.

“All the more reason for me to win it then.” Lewis kisses him again, and Nico feels the previous jealousy and worry melt away from his body.

────────────────────────

June 14th, Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix

Adrenaline is coursing through Nico’s entire body when Lewis actually does win it. Not that he’s ever had any doubt of Lewis’s skills; he’s the first person to sing his praises, but with Ferrari being Ferrari, there’s always the possibility of the perfect race going horribly wrong.

But with Ferrari being Ferrari, there’s the possibility that the win, when it finally comes, becomes a piece of history.

And Nico is in the small commentators’ room of Sky Italy, watching as history is being written, as Lewis Hamilton takes his first win with Ferrari, and his 106th in Formula 1. As everyone around him is too focused on the screens, he allows himself a secret moment of happiness and celebration, as his eyes water and a stupid grin takes over his face.

Before he can even truly process it, someone is calling his name, and he’s being led to the podium, and then there’s a microphone in his hand. There’s a microphone in his hand, and his mind is telling him to snap into work mode, to put on his fake plastic smile and ask Sky’s rehearsed questions, but his body senses Lewis, his eyes track him as he makes his way over, as he kneels on the ground for a few seconds to let it all sink in.

And Nico desperately wants to reach out and touch him, put a hand on his back, wrap his arms around him, and squeeze him until it registers to both of them that this is real life and not a beautiful dream.

But he can’t, and so he doesn’t, busying his hands with his phone and microphone, willing them not to reach out to touch, willing his entire body not to gravitate towards Lewis.

He gets a wink and a smile before they turn to the cameras, and he feels his face melt, grateful he’s facing away lest they see the goofy smile reserved only for his husband.

In just five minutes, the interview is over, but they’re somehow the longest five minutes of Nico’s life probably. Just five minutes before they’re out of the sight of cameras, away from prying fans and overzealous reporters, in a small hallway, just them, Lando and George, and Lewis is turning towards him, grinning, his entire face lit up with joy, and then Lewis is kissing him, and Nico is wrapping his hands around his neck, and —

— and then Lando Norris gasps and ruins everything.

It’s not really Lando’s fault. It’s not every day you see Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg passionately kiss after a race.

But really, Lando could have waited a few more seconds. Or kept quiet like George.

They pull away and look at the two young men gawking at them. Lando looks like his eyes are about to pop out of his head, and George’s eyebrows are almost blending into his hair.

There’s a beat of silence before Lando turns towards George:

“Did you know about this?!?” He’s pointing accusatorily at George, who quickly turns to look back at him, looking offended.

“Me? How would I know?” George’s voice is raised about an octave above his normal pitch.

“You were teammates for like forever; if anyone, you'd know about it!”

“Yeah, mate, like you know everything about your teammates. The only reason you know about Oscar’s love life is because you’re—-“

“Do not finish that sentence, George!” Lando is suddenly looking at George with panic in his eyes before quickly looking over at Lewis and Nico to judge their expressions.

Nico looks at Lewis at this new information, and both of them can't hold back a fond chuckle.

Ah, young love.

“Well, now that there has been an equivalent exchange of career-ending secrets, I think we can all pretend this never happened, right?” Nico slips back into his interviewer voice with just a hint of threat woven in.

Both of them nod and quickly go down the hallway, leaving Nico and Lewis alone.

Once the sound of footsteps is no longer audible, they look at each other and burst into laughter.

“I guess this counts as training for what’s to come, huh?” Lewis says and Nico sighs in return.

“We’re really doing this, then?” Somehow it didn’t feel real before, not like it does now, when someone outside of their families has seen them together, when Lewis has won a race and is in contention for the championship.

“We really are.” Lewis is smiling softly at him. They share another kiss in the quiet of the hallway before a voice calls out, looking for Lewis.

“Wait, why did we let George go without also making him tell us his deepest secrets?” Nico asks before they have to go attend to their respective obligations.

“I caught George making out with Alex and Alex’s girlfriend his second week in Mercedes, and I think he's been scared of me ever since,” Lewis says in a hushed tone, and Nico can’t keep the surprise off his face.

“And here I thought we were the only ones keeping secrets.” He shakes his head, and with the promise of a real celebration when they get back, he makes his way over to the Sky crew, ready to talk about how incredible his husband is for the next two hours.

────────────────────────

July 5th, British Grand Prix

The atmosphere at Silverstone is electric as always, and Nico is more than a little disappointed to not be able to attend the race in a more official capacity, instead having a business meeting with some tech company.

Lewis’s P3 is made just a tad bitter by his teammate winning his home race, but it doesn’t change the fact that Lewis is still third in the championship standings, behind two unreliable cars and an inner-team dynamic that is bound to crumble.

Nico knows that, because he lived through it; being the unofficial second driver, always one step lower than the generational talent you’d always have to look up at. It’s difficult not to grow bitter in such an environment, and while George is doing a phenomenal job of staying his usual diplomatic and gracious self, a breaking point is imminent. Again, Nico would know.

Their situations are incomparable, of course, but Nico does recognize his younger self in George, and hopes he might one day get that championship he so badly wants.

Perhaps next year, because his husband is winning this one.

Sorry to George and to Kimi, whose career Nico has actively funded, but there is only one man who Nico always wants to win, and that man is Lewis Hamilton.

────────────────────────

June 19th, Belgian Grand Prix & June 26th Hungarian Grand Prix

A private apology has to be sent to George after Lewis sort of ruins his race in Belgium, and then Nico sends him a message after Hungary when the team screws him over again.

Somehow along the way, dinner plans are arranged for the winter break, because Lewis has started feeling weirdly guilty about not showing George he wasn’t alone in having a big gay secret. Leave it to Lewis Hamilton to always feel like he needed to be a role model. God, how Nico adores that man. If it were him in the Mercedes garage back then, still hungry for more wins and getting outperformed, he probably would have made George’s life a living hell.

(Nico did work on this… quirk of his character extensively in therapy, thank you very much, along with everything else. He’s pretty sure one of their couples counselors genuinely contemplated quitting her job when they visited her during the peak of their “we’re still together, but we hate each other, but we still have sex every week” phase in 2016.)

And with all of that, Lewis is second in the standings just ahead of George, and the F1 summer break begins.

────────────────────────

July 27th to August 19th, Summer break

The first thing they do during the break, something they’ve been planning for a few months now, is that they get a new dog.

It wasn’t an easy decision to make, not with how hard the loss of Roscoe hit Lewis, but somewhere along the way of healing from the grief, their apartment in Monaco started feeling too empty without the sound of barks and nails clacking on the polished floors.

And when a breeder from the US caught Lewis’s eye, showing off the most adorable Golden Retriever puppies, and he had already planned to go to the US during the break, it was like a sign from the universe.

So a week later, there is a small ball of yellow fur sniffing every corner of the apartment, while Lewis is on a call with his PR team to choose which pictures with the Kardashian family to post on his Instagram and when.

Nico is thankful Lewis is actually friends with the family, so that not everything is a complete and staged lie. He doesn’t really care about it all — the moral implications of promoting a fake life to millions of Instagram followers — but he does care about Lewis not being home with him.

He is more than happy with the last two weeks of break, when they get to spend them together at home, on their yacht, at the beach, going on walks with Halo. There’s something hilarious about Lewis paying the paparazzi to take pictures of him with the Kardashians, and then Nico paying the usual Monegasque paparazzi not to follow his yacht around all day.

Before the season picks up again, there’s another “strategy” meeting, discussing how their plan is going to move forward. During it, Lewis suggests something that all the PR people love, but makes Nico scrunch his eyebrows.

“You want me to walk into the paddock with your dog under my arm?” Nico asks after the team has eagerly greenlit the idea, talking about pets and engagement and whatnot.

“Our dog, you mean.” Lewis points to where Halo is currently sleeping in Nico’s lap.

“Yes, what’s mine is yours; I was there at our wedding.” Nico rolls his eyes at him.

“It’s the Dutch Grand Prix; everybody is going to be talking about Max. The media isn’t going to pay attention to you, but people online will,” Lewis moves closer to him on the couch, taking his hand in his.

“And they’re going to see you and our adorable baby, walking into the Ferrari hospitality. And then they’re gonna take candid shots of us talking, and the internet will go crazy over us reconciling and being such good friends, that I even let you take care of my dog.” Lewis is playing with Nico’s wedding ring, his own on a chain around his neck stacked over a necklace with a cross.

“Or they’re going to say I stole Kim Kardashian’s dog and I’m a homewrecker,” Nico groans and runs a hand over his face. Halo, all too disturbed by the humans around him making noise, moves over to the other side of the couch and falls asleep again.

A few seconds later, Nico now has a lapful of seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is looking at him with his big brown eyes.

“Or, they’ll think you’re my WAG.” Lewis is smiling at him, eyes framed by those long lashes, and this is cheating, full-on taking advantage of the fact that Nico is a very weak man.

“Oh yeah? Will I have to steal your Dior sunglasses and rent a Birkin to complete the look?” He’s being intentionally bitchy now, all while his hands snake around Lewis’ waist and under his shirt.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Lewis breathes out, moving closer until their noses are almost touching. “I’ll get you a custom Birkin, make it rosso corsa, so people know who you’re cheering for,” the words are whispered into Nico’s mouth.

“I’m always cheering for you.” Nico whispers back, before connecting their lips in a heated kiss.

────────────────────────

August 23rd, Dutch Grand Prix

It’s as Lewis predicted until about two hours after the race, when every photographer starts looking through their footage and suddenly finds pictures of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in one room, actually making eye contact and having a conversation, while an over-excited puppy jumps at their feet.

“No media outlet is going to speculate on your relationship being romantic, because to them that isn’t even a possibility,” someone from Ferrari’s PR team is explaining to them over Zoom, after the reaction was quite larger than expected.

“And everyone who does think you had or have something more going on won’t be accusing Lewis of cheating or anything that could damage the brand. If anything, we’ve hit two birds with one stone: the general public now won’t be suspicious to see you together, and the online conspiracy theorist bubble will overanalyze every such interaction, bringing it more traction.” Even as Nico is absolutely terrified they’re moving way too quickly, revealing all of their cards, it seems the people whose job it is to deal with this are quite pleased.

And if a little Twitter attention is too much for Nico, he’s now not sure how he’ll handle what they have planned for Monza.

────────────────────────

September 5th, Italian Grand Prix Qualifying

Monza is always insane. The saying that Italy has two religions — the Catholic Church and Ferrari— proves true when you survey the crowds of red, the banners, the flags, the smoke bombs.

Nico is usually there with Sky every year for the coverage, switching from the UK to Italy for the actual race coverage, but he loves getting to do the grid walk and the pre-race coverage in English, loves how wild the crowd goes when he switches to Italian.

(Now that he has a future Ferrari champion at home, Nico has taken to sometimes switching to Italian in an attempt to help Lewis with his knowledge of the language. It usually doesn’t have the desired result.)

But in a break from tradition, Nico is in Monza a day early, walking around the paddock before Quali. He’s dressed in a beige suit, which Lewis calls his “sad beige mom outfit”, but he’s accessorized it with the Richard Mille Lewis got him for their first wedding anniversary, so there were no complaints there.

Nico is in the paddock with a very important mission — starting Phase Three: Accustoming people to seeing him in the Ferrari hospitality and garage.

And to do that, he has a lunch date planned with one Alexandra Leclerc.

In the week between Zandvoort and Monza, Lewis invited Charles and his wife over for dinner at his apartment in Monaco, forgetting to mention that it was their apartment.

So it’s safe to say the Leclercs were quite surprised when Nico opened the door.

Over white wine and sparkling water for their expecting guest, while their dogs chased each other around, Lewis gave them the short version of everything: they were childhood sweethearts, they fell out and had their struggles while teammates, got back together in 2018, got married in 2020 after Lewis got his 7th, and they now want to stop hiding.

It made Alexandra cry, and both Lewis and Nico were quite concerned, but she waved it off as hormones and it being a romantic story, all things considered.

Charles also said his congratulations, and they both eagerly agreed to be a part of their grand scheme.

Which brings Nico to being photographed in the paddock walking with and talking to the, now quite obviously, pregnant Alexandra Leclerc.

They’re taking advantage of that, because most of the gossip publications will care about her and her pregnancy and not about 41-year-old Nico Rosberg. But at the same time, it sets up the narrative of being the spouse of a Ferrari driver.

(“My WAG.” Lewis had a whole thing about calling Nico that. Nico didn’t really understand it, didn’t understand the need for the term in the first place.

“It means you’re all mine, sweetheart.” Lewis had said when Nico asked him why he liked it so much. “My WAG, my husband, all mine and no one else’s,” he had whispered heatedly. Lewis had quite the possessive streak, and if Nico had to guess, the prospect of sharing their relationship with the world made him act on it more than usual.)

Getting photographed with Alex results in the expected social media attention, and Nico has unofficially been dubbed the “third Ferrari WAG”, a title he does not enjoy.

“If anything, I’m your first wife, and you’re the one cheating on me.” He whispers into Lewis’s neck while they’re cuddling in bed in their shared hotel room, Lewis reading out tweets to him.

Nico is both relieved that this next phase of the plan means no more appearances and interactions with the Kardashians, and also horrified that the media attention will now be shifting onto him.

He’s used to having cameras pointed at him; he was famous at some point in the past, but he’s older now, and the attention will be because of his personal life and his connection to Lewis, and not because of something he’s doing.

He’ll get used to it; he knows he will, but it still feels weird that people care that much about his relationship with Lewis, or the idea of it.

But he really doesn’t have the time to care or worry about that, because Lewis qualified second, meaning Nico is going to be on pins and needles all of Sunday.

────────────────────────

September 6th, Italian Grand Prix

He’s done it.

He’s actually done it.

Lewis Hamilton is a Ferrari winner, in Monza.

53 laps of incredible racing, overtaking, and actually good strategy, and it’s Lewis P1, Charles P3.

“Incredibile, incredibile!” Nico is saying on the Sky Italy broadcast, as people around him are cheering. The smile on his face is wide and brilliant, overjoyed at not just another win, but the win for a Ferrari driver.

It is not all of Italy cheering, not with Kimi DNF-ing ten laps before the end (George finishing in fourth), but it’s damn well most of it, the crowds going wild, chanting, singing, screaming.

Nico watches as Lewis gets on the stage, and the crowd roars when he steps on the top step. There might be seven stars on Lewis’s racing suit to honor Schumacher, but Nico knows in his heart, even if no one else believes it, that Lewis will get his eighth star this year.

Later, in the small hours of the night after the huge Ferrari party Lewis insisted he come to, they’re tired, and a little drunk, and very sweaty, and they’re walking back to their hotel room, giggling and swaying, stopping every few steps to kiss against a wall.

“Do you know what this reminds me of?” Lewis asks in between kisses when they’re safe in their room.

“What?” Nico whispers against his mouth.

“2008, after we shared that podium.” Lewis’s smile is big and silly, lighting up his entire face. He might as well look as young as we did back then, his eyes wide and that same gap between his teeth.

“And we know how that season ended, don’t we?” Nico smirks and Lewis rolls his eyes at him, but kisses him again, wordlessly grateful for the support his husband has for him.

Race Results: P1.  L. Hamilton; P2 L. Norris; P3. C. Leclerc

Current standings in the championship: 1. A.K. Antonelli 242; 2. L. Hamilton 208; 3. G. Russell 195.

────────────────────────

September 13th, Spanish Grand Prix

Spain is their last chance to pull another stunt before four weeks of races in countries where they shouldn’t push their luck. So they decide to go all out.

Kimi is starting on Pole with George behind for a Mercedes 1-2. Then Lando in P3 and Lewis in P4, not the best but certainly not an unattainable podium.

It’s lights out at the Spanish Grand Prix, everyone ready for 57 laps of racing in dry conditions.

On Lap 13, Lewis overtakes Lando for third, and then on Lap 21, Lance Stroll puts it in the wall on Turn 20, causing a Red Flag and the race to be suspended.

What follows are 30 minutes of discussion about tyres, energy management, and championship chances while different cameras pan around the track and garages.

Lewis finishes the race P2, Kimi P1, and Max in P3, with George in P4 because of another bad call from Mercedes.

After the race, Nico is stopped by Fred Vasseur, who is quite surprised to see him in their garage.

“Lewis invited me.” Nico tells him plainly, in French, of course, and Fred gets a look in his eyes that Nico can only describe as mischievous.

Nico is lying on the couch in Monaco, post-race coverage playing quietly in the background as he answers Emails, Halo sleeping at his feet, when he gets a message from Lewis. It’s a link to an interview he did after the race.

“Lewis, a good performance for you today, P3. Do you have any thoughts on that?”

“Well, I’m very happy with the result today, happy with the points for the team.”

“Bahrain is a track you’re quite good at, holding the record for most wins here. How does it feel getting your first Ferrari podium here?”

“It’s awesome, it really is. I have a lot of fond memories here, like me and Nico battling it out in ‘14, and yeah, it’s just a great feeling.” Lewis is all smiles as he says it, and Nico feels himself smile too, remembering the race.

He texts Lewis a single heart back, and Lewis replies with “Remember what happened after the race ;)”, completely ruining the wholesome vibe.

October 25th, United States Grand Prix

Right before Qualifying on Saturday, it’s announced that the last two races of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will be canceled, instead replaced by Imola at the end of November.

And while that raises questions and speculation about the championship, about possible double points and about rule changes, a different question is raised in Lewis Hamilton’s driver’s room.

“If it’s going to be in Imola, then we can do what we planned for Vegas there, can’t we?” Lewis is pacing around the room.

“You want to kiss me in front of the entire world when you win the championship?” Nico teases, like he isn’t secretly horrified of the idea.

“If I win,” Lewis is quick to correct him.

“When you win it.” Nico insists. He swallows thickly before continuing, “I am quite terrified by the prospect of that.” One of their many therapists said open communication is important for a relationship. “But my career isn’t at risk here, Lew, so if you want to risk it, I’ll jump head first after you.” They’re standing in front of each other, Nico having placed a hand at Lewis’s nape, looking deeply into his eyes.

“I love you,” Lewis whispers, voice full of emotion.

“Love you too. Now you have Quaili in fifteen minutes, so please go,” Lewis leaves but not before stealing another kiss.

Honestly, you’d think they’re both still teenagers in the honeymoon phase with how they act, not 41-year-olds who at some point only saw each other for hate sex. Love really does work in mysterious ways.

November 8st, Mexican Grand Prix Post-Qualifying Interviews

“Question for Lewis: you have been steadily closing the points gap in the second part of the season, finishing on the podium at all of the races except one, and as a viewer it has been incredible to watch. What do you attribute this gradation to, other than your driving skills?”

“Well, obviously I have to thank the team, and everyone back at the factory for building such a great car, and for all they do during and after the races. My success has been a joint effort. And I have to mention my family, of course, who’ve been supporting me day and night, flying out to races and ruining their sleep.” Lewis and the entire media pen laugh.

Nico, who is jet-lagged from flying to Brazil the night before from Singapore, where he had an inverters’ meeting, is watching the interview while sipping on his third green tea, and not as amused.

“I’m divorcing you” he texts Lewis, and gets a single heart emoji in response.

Nico groans and runs a hand through his hair.

He couldn’t not come to Brazil.

Lewis loves Brazil, and Brazil loves him back, the crowds cheering for him like it’s his home race. Well, it technically is his home race, honorary citizenship and all.

Wait, does that mean Nico has citizenship by marriage? Do they recognize that here? He should google that.

But anyway, Nico is in Brazil, because Lewis loves Brazil, and Nico loves Lewis, and he really wants to celebrate with him when he wins.

(Yes, when he wins, because Lewis will win. Nico has been visualizing it all week, so he’ll win)

Finishing his tea, Nico decides to do something productive, opening his laptop to read the very long shared document detailing every possible scenario and outcome for the race in Imola.

He’s equal parts terrified and excited, terrified of what’s going to happen with the race, the championship, how the world will react to them coming out, how the FIA will react to them coming out. But he’s elated by the idea of not hiding anymore, of not pretending Lewis is only his colleague, or that they have a “neutral relationship”. He wants to be able to hold his husband’s hand, kiss him before a race, walk into the paddock with him. He wants to be featured in Lewis’s Instagram posts, as juvenile as that may seem, wants to be in the background of his selfies, wants to be tagged in anniversary posts, wants Lewis to share anniversary posts.

“Less than a month to go,” he thinks as he starts reading.

November 22nd, Las Vegas Grand Prix

Nico is so nervous the entire weekend, it’s almost like he’s going to be driving the car.

Lewis is so close to first place in the standings that they can both taste it, can already imagine putting the ninth trophy in their display case at home.

(Yes, they keep their trophies in their home; yes, they have huge egos, they’re world champions after all.)

Lewis qualifies P3 on Saturday and sulks all the way through dinner, with Nico having to reassure him that P3 is still a very good position.

“Not with a Mercedes 1-2 in front,” Lewis murmurs around a mouthful of quinoa and avocado.

“Well, I think 17-year-old Max Verstappen would disagree with you.” Nico jokes, making him snort.

The thing about Lewis Hamilton is that he loves to win.

Scratch that— he needs to win. It’s in his blood to win, a natural-born phenomenon that he is.

And, of course, he’s a graceful loser, calm and diplomatic, because, well, he has to be so that the media doesn’t spin tales of him being “aggressive”, but he craves winning.

And now that he’s so close to it, he hates the idea of losing it.

On Sunday morning, Lewis is hungry for it. Nico can see it in his eyes, in the way he carries himself, in the cool confidence he enters the paddock with, ignoring the cameras that follow him.

Nico is in the Ferrari garage again, Lewis’s mother next to him.

She’s all too excited to have her son and son-in-law in the same place, and as the only person in the world who believes in Lewis more than Nico, she’s already told him her plans for their celebration of Lewis’s win later tonight.

The race starts off uneventful, with the top five keeping their positions.

Lewis’s pace is good, his tyre management masterful, and he just has to wait for his moment to strike.

Nico sees that opportunity around Lap 26, when George overtakes Kimi. That alone doesn’t make anything easier for Lewis, but knowing that Lewis is barely behind him in the standings and every point counts, Kimi tries to take the position back—

“And it’s contact between the two Mercedes! And it looks like a puncture for George Russell and front wing damage for Kimi Antonelli!”

They both box, and Nico watches as Lewis builds up the gap to the rest of the pack, keeping steady before boxing for a one-stop strategy.

The rest of the race passes in a blur, as the Mercedes struggle with their pace, struggling with overtaking, and the checkered flag instead sees a Ferrari, a RedBull and a McLaren.

Nico watches as Lewis hugs his mom in Parc Ferme, and his heart beats a little faster at the thought that it’s going to be him there celebrating with Lewis next week.

He watches as his Ferrari winner climbs to the top step, as he holds the trophy up in the air and smiles as bright as the sun.

And with that, Lewis Hamilton is only one point away from the championship leader.

Race Results: P1. L. Hamilton; P2. L. Norris; P3. M. Verstappen

Current standings in the championship: 1. A.K. Antonelli 368; 2. L. Hamilton 367; 3. G. Russell 301.

November 29th, Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

“What if I don’t win?” It’s 6 a.m., and Lewis is awake, which means that Nico is awake, because Lewis almost broke down his hotel room door.

They decided to get different hotel rooms for the last race, Nico not wanting to be a distraction, not with how nervous he also felt, and Lewis not wanting to be around people before the title decider.

He just needs to finish in front of Kimi.

Easier said than done when Lewis is starting P2, and the trend all season has been that Kimi starts P1 and finishes P1.

It’s Lando in P3 and George in P4, both equally eager to score some final points for their teams.

“Then you try again next year,” Nico says like it’s that simple, like he doesn’t know how much not winning kills you from the inside out.

“You try again, but this time, I get to be there by your side.” Nico offers with a reassuring smile.

“But you’re going to win it.” Nico says firmly, hoping that maybe his confidence will soothe those last few doubts weighing on Lewis’s mind.

“I’ll see you after the race.” Nico says when Angela comes to pick Lewis up an hour later.

“I can’t wait to kiss you after,” Lewis says, and Nico can’t help but roll his eyes

“Yes, you big sap, I love you too. Now to win another title.” With a quick peck, Lewis is out of the room, and Nico is left alone to face the horrible anxiety that’s making his stomach turn.

He’s worried about the race, he’s worried about after the race, he’s worried about everything there is to worry about.

There’s still time before he’s promised Lewis’s mom to meet her for breakfast, so he lies on the floor of the hotel room and does his breathing exercises, slowly willing the panic away.

The outfit Nico is wearing to the paddock was picked out by Lewis’s team, who wanted everything to be perfect.

He’s wearing a cream suit with a crimson red pocket square and his anniversary watch. His wedding ring, which he usually takes off when he knows cameras are around, is reflecting the artificial light inside the garage.

He walks in with Lewis’s mother, shares a hug and a few words with his father, feeling the warmth of being surrounded by his in-laws.

Imola isn’t the shiniest of races, but despite the lack of time, Nico finds they managed to clean up pretty well.

He also spots Alexandra in the garage, looking all but ready to pop, and they exchange pleasantries and well wishes, Nico smiling very wide when she lets him in on the secret that it’s a girl.

With thirty minutes to lights out, Nico feels both excitement and worry running through his body, his left hand shaking ever so slightly.

He puts on the Ferrari headset he’s handed, aware the pre-race show is still airing, and a camera will soon be pointed at him.

Nico watches as the Formation Lap ends and the cars line up on the grid. He watches as the lights turn red; he watches as they go out and the race starts.

Nothing happens for the first few laps, but as time passes, it is clear that Kimi, who has never raced on this track, is struggling.

His pace is off, some of his corners risky, and George is quickly gaining on him.

On Lap 27, George — going for a two-stop strategy — has a slow stop and comes out P7, behind Charles. In front of Lewis, who is now P2 but still on old tyres, Kimi is trying to build a big enough gap to be able to pit and still come out first, but he’s clearly struggling with it.

On Lap 31, Kimi pits and Lewis takes the lead, his tyres in need of a change and soon.

And as if actually scripted, the opportunity presents itself when Ollie Bearman spins out and ends in the grass, bringing out a Virtual Safety Car.

Lewis takes advantage of the cheat pit stop and manages to come out in P3, with Kimi in front in P2 and Lando in P1.

Many things happen in the next 32 Laps: both Cadillacs DNF with brake issues, Stroll pits and then retires the car, cars in the midfield showcase incredible skills in defending and overtaking, but in the front, nothing interesting happens until the last ten laps.

It’s Lap 54, and Lando is sitting on a cozy seven-second gap, while the gap between Lewis and Kimi is slowly closing.

By Lap 57, Lewis is just 0.879 seconds behind him, and soon enough Lewis is going around the outside, and then he’s done it, and—

“Lewis Hamilton goes around the outside of Kimi Antonelli, and he gets the job done! Lewis Hamilton moving up to P2!” Crofty’s voice is loud and booming, and Nico is jumping from excitement, hugging Carmen and shouting, his eyes never leaving the screen.

And Kimi may try to overtake him and get his place back, but Lewis’s pace is just too good, he’s just too quick.

“One more lap to go, and it’s Lando Norris in P1, Lewis Hamilton in P2, and Kimi Antonelli in P3. The championship battle comes down to this lap, to these final 19 corners!”

Nico counts them down as they go, his hand squeezed in Carmen’s

“And Kimi Antonelli may try to get his position back, but it’s already too late as he heads into turn 18, and as the dreams of the young driver fade, it is an old legend that is triumphant!” Crofty is saying, and Nico feels his heart in his throat.

“It is the checkered flag for Lando Norris, and behind him in P2, your 2026 Formula 1 World Champion, for the eighth time, breaking Michael Schumacher’s record, breaking his own record, it’s Lewis Hamilton!”

Nico’s ears are ringing, and his entire body is shaking with adrenaline as he screams with joy, as Carmen and Anthony hug him, as he tries to believe that what his eyes are showing him isn’t a dream.

He has an arm around each of his in-laws as they watch Lewis do donuts on the track. Nico knows that his face is red, and that tears are falling down his cheeks, and he’s also very aware of the camera pointed directly at his face.

There are no fireworks on the track, no pyrotechnics or jets; it’s just the deafening roar of the crowd as Lewis parks in front of the P2 signs in Parc Ferme, as he gets out of the car, and stands on top of it.

Lewis Hamilton is king of the world for the eighth time in his career, bringing a championship to Ferrari, the first in 19 years, cementing himself not as a winner, not as a legend, but as a deity, as something above every single person who is or was a part of the sport.

Nico’s ears are ringing from the screams around him as he stands behind the barriers with the rest of the Ferrari garage; his throat is sore from his own screams, and his eyes are still wet and red.

Forgetting all about the rules and his obligation to get weighed, Lewis is taking off his gloves and helmet, making his way to the sea of red while every camera follows him. Stopping in front of the barriers, stopping in front of Nico, he can see that Lewis’s eyes are also wet from crying, and for a few moments they just look at each other, with their matching tear-stained cheeks and wet eyelashes, and then Lewis is dropping his helmet and gloves to the ground, and he’s moving the barrier to the side—

And then he’s pulling Nico into himself, wrapping one hand around his nape, and one around his waist, bringing their bodies as close as possible, before kissing him on the mouth for all of the world to see.

Nico suddenly can’t hear the crowd, can’t feel the people around him, and the only thing he feels is the heat of Lewis’s body and the softness of his lips. He doesn’t care about the clicking of camera shutters around them, doesn’t care about the team wolf-whistling, doesn’t care about the joint gasp from the crowd.

He only cares about Lewis, his Lewis, his champion.

They pull away not because they want to, but because an FIA official is very sternly pulling at Lewis’s elbow to go get weighed. And not a second later after getting weighed, he’s running back to them; he’s hugging his mother and father, he’s hugging Angela and jumping up and down, he’s hugging his team, and they’re lifting him into the air, a god high in the sky.

Nico has half a mind that Martin Brundle is currently interviewing Lando and Kimi; Nico has half a mind that Kimi has just lost the championship everybody said was his, because who cares about anyone who isn’t Lewis Hamilton right now?

Lewis, who is swarmed in a sea of red, who has brought back greatness to the most emblematic team in all of Formula 1, Lewis, who has brought greatness to every team which had the honor of having him as a driver.

Someone is pulling Lewis away from the team; another FIA official, who is very persistent in following the rules, and Lewis passes by Nico again, their eyes catching, and he stops dead in his tracks, giving an excuse to the poor woman just trying to do her job, because he can’t not kiss Nico again.

“You did it, you did it, my eighth-time world champion!” Nico is yelling when they pull apart, hands cradling Lewis’s head.

“I can’t believe this is real, pu,” Lewis is saying back, his voice shaky with emotion.

“Go before they fine you!” Nico has to scold him, even though the last thing he wants is to let go.

Post-Race Interviews - Hosted by Martin Brundle

“Lewis, what an incredible achievement. Absolutely monumental, eight-time world champion. An incredible race and an incredible season, bringing victory back to Ferrari! How do you feel?”

“Oh man,” Lewis is smiling as he tries to dry off his eyes, happy tears refusing to stop flowing. ”I’ve not got the words really,” his voice is quivering, and he needs a few seconds to bring himself back to reality.

“I want to firstly thank the team, everyone in the garage, everyone back at the factory, every single person who worked tirelessly to help us achieve this. It wasn’t easy, but we got there, and that’s what I want everyone to remember: that even when everything seems lost, there’s always hope, there’s always a new day ahead.”

“I also want to thank the fans. Team LH and the Tifosi, thank you for not giving up on me, even when I did. Thank you for standing behind me, reminding me who I am.”

“And I couldn’t have done this without my family. They never stopped believing in me, never stopped pushing me, never stopped showing up when I needed them. So thank you.”

“Eight world championships, Lewis, beating Michael Schumacher’s record, writing history today here at Imola, first title for Ferrari in 19 years! Did you ever think this was going to happen?”

There is a smile playing at Lewis’s lips before he answers, a twinkle in his eyes.

“When I was little, still racing karts, there was this boy I was friends with. And we spent so much time talking about this, talking about winning races and championships. I don’t think I thought it possible, not even then, that I’d win eight titles, but I’m pretty sure he did.”

“Well, I think he ought to be very proud right now. Tell me about the race; it was quite a close one.”

“I was very disappointed with my position in Qualifying. As we’ve seen all season, Kimi’s pace in the Mercedes was unmatched, and I knew I had to finish in front of him to win. There was a bit of luck involved, I’m not going to lie, but the Ferrari pit wall crafted a beautiful strategy, and I’m proud of the work we put in as a team.”

“Unfortunate for Kimi, the gap being only one point, but the entire world now knows what he’s capable of, that he’s a force to be reckoned with, and I’m certain he has a very bright and successful career in front of him.”

“Thank you, Lewis.”

────────────────────────

Nico watches as the top three drivers step on the podium: Kimi with his eyes still puffy but forcing on a smile, Lewis, who hasn’t stopped smiling since he got out of the car, and Lando, who is proud to have shown why he’s a world champion.

The British anthem plays, and every single camera is pointed at Lewis, who is mouthing the lyrics, eyelashes and cheeks still wet.

As he accepts his second-place trophy, he steps off the podium, walking to the end of the stage, before finding Nico and his parents in the crowd below. With one hand on his heart, he looks at his family and says, “For you”.

Music erupts and champagne sprays, Lando spraying Lewis, both of them spraying Kimi, Lewis spraying Fred, who accepted the constructors’ trophy. Lewis makes sure to hug the young driver, saying a few words of encouragement, knowing firsthand how disappointed he must be right now.

David Coulthard is holding a microphone on the side of the stage, mindful not to get covered by champagne before approaching Lewis.

“Lewis, what an incredible end to this season, a historic victory here in Imola, congratulations! How does it feel to be a Ferrari winner, to bring such glory to the team once more?”

“It’s just an incredible feeling, and I owe it all to the team, who worked so hard this year, who listened to me and made changes when I asked them. Grazie a tutti, grazie mille!”

“Do you think it’s possible we’ll see you follow in Michael’s footsteps now, becoming a consecutive Ferrari winner?”

“Oh man, I mean I’d hope so,” Lewis laughs wholeheartedly. “It would be incredible to win more; the team deserves it, they really do, and I’d love to make them proud.”

“Speaking of people who are proud of you, I believe some belated congratulations are in order?”

“Thank you, but they’d have to be quite belated. We got married six years ago.” Lewis laughs.

“And may many more follow. Now, Lewis, about the race”

(They met with DC a month ago and gave him a script of what to say to allow Lewis to casually mention their marriage. They send him a crate of wine after the interview moment goes viral.)

Post-Race Press Conference with the Podium Finishers

“Question for Lewis: Firstly, congratulations on your eighth title, and secondly, congratulations on your marriage. I think I speak on behalf of the world when I say that I am curious to know how what we saw in 2016 turned into such a strong marriage. What are you willing to share with us?”

“I think a lot of people struggle to understand Nico and me. Yes, we had a falling out in ‘16, a pretty bad one at that, but we’ve known each other since we were twelve or thirteen. I think we started dating when we were seventeen, before we went off to race in different series.”

“It’s not easy to forget such a long history, even if you really want to. The more we tried to get away from each other, the closer we ended up. Our lives have always been so entangled that trying to pretend the other didn’t exist was impossible.”

“I’ve known Nico for more years than not; I’ve loved him for the better part of thirty years, and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. He’s seen me at my worst; I’ve seen him at his worst. We made each other worse some years ago, but now we only make each other better. So anyone who has any comments about us, our relationship, or our past can keep it to themselves. ”

“Thank you, Lewis.”

“Last questions, please!” a press officer calls before pointing at a journalist. A blonde man in a tan suit with a Sky Sports microphone stands up. The entire room starts laughing.

“Nico Rosberg, Sky Sports Germany: can you tell us what flavor the wedding cake was?”

Lewis, his smile blinding and eyes sparkling, says, “Vanilla and frosted cereal.”
