By the Heart of the North

Summary:

What if Hiccup ran away from Berk, not seeing any way that he or the Dragons would be understood by his people, only to unexpectedly find himself with a like-minded soul that he shares worldviews as well as pains with.

Notes:

I apologize for any spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language :(

Also in this FanFic the Light fury is called Snowfury! Like the lightfury they're a sub-species of a Nightfury that, long ago, traveled into the depth of the Northpole to survive and adapted, hence the white appearance and glittery scales. The reason for having less texture is that they nest inside glacier caves and their main source of food are the fish, deep in the icy water, so they have to move in water a lot.

The little rework of their species isn't fully fleshed out, but I also couldn't just let the light fury off the hook, with no explanations on why the species is the way it is lol
Enjoy reading!

Chapter 1: What are the odds

“I have always been alone for as long as I can remember…”

Jack was kneeling on the figurehead of the huntership, gazing down at the many many cages as the words formed in his head, the moon shining bright behind him, leaving him only as a silhouette against the sky, his glowing eyes allowing the only contrast to the otherwise shadow engulfed figure.

“.. and Dragons were probably the closest thing I've ever had to a friend.”

With a swift motion did he jump down, landing silently on the wooden floor, frost building where his feet touched the ground, revealing his inner turmoil as he looked into one of the cages, then another and another, each revealing another “friend” chained and muzzled. It was a cruel sight, seeing so many souls in danger. Finally Jack came to a stop in front of a seemingly empty cage, tho he knew better as he waited for the invisibility factor to pass.

“So having to see them caged, in pain and scared.. I just can't handle it…”

The moon, still behind Jack, threw a shadow over the now appearing creature, the usually reflective scales feeling weirdly mute and the sharp eyes now ripped open in fear. Jack couldn't look away, especially not after their gazes met. He had seen Snowfurys before, he knew how they looked, acted, hid and fought. And he knew that she must've spent a lot of time in this bare cage, certainly too much time.

“I have to act.. I have to help.”

The light from the distant fire lit up the dark water surrounding it, the screams fading into the distance, merely noise that would never be heard by anyone.

Jack sat on a little Rock formation above the chaos, observing silently as the Boat with all its remaining passengers started sinking, inevitably putting out the flames eating at the wood, until finally the sea was calm again, silent and cold, almost as if nothing had ever been there, almost as if nothing had happened in the first place. Jack continued to stare at that specific spot. He never enjoyed this, any of it. He didn't enjoy the dragons caged, he didn't enjoy seeing the abuse and as just as it might be, he didn't enjoy hurting the humans, hurting the hunters.

He had often sat with what he was doing, weighing his morals and actions. Freeing dragons was the right thing to do, that was out of the question! But could he have done more to help the hunters? Should he even do something to help them? Maybe try to convince them, pull them on his side? It's not like he's never tried it before, he had attempted often to talk to them, speak sense into them. But if there was one thing that made Vikings, Vikings, then it was the fact that they were stoic, very stoic. And so all his attempts fell on nothing but deaf ears and resulted in the one or other attack. The spirit let out a deep sigh, before grabbing his staff and standing up, looking at the moon in some way hoping to hear something from the glowing orb above, but like usual, there was nothing, there never would be.

Jack's eyes narrowed before his head sank down again. He should be happy, it had been a successful mission after all, every dragon was rescued, none dead or injured and yet, Jack felt as empty as ever, as lonely as ever. It was always bad during the quiet of the night, when there is nothing but you and your thoughts.

Just as he was about to turn and fly away, he heard something.

He lifted his eyes, looking around, first at the surrounding rocks before the quick realization kicked in that the sound was coming from above. But he was too slow. Within the next second, Jack felt himself being grabbed and yanked off of the rocks, before gliding over the ocean, held by two very paw-like digits. When he looked up, a familiar Dragon looked at him from overhead, a gentle croon coming from her as she observed the very confused spirit in her grasp, who looked at her with wide eyes.

Notes:

Yes, sadly this chapter is pretty short, that's mainly because it was based off of a mini comic I made a while ago which was also only 3 pages long! It's mainly just to show how Jack and his Snow fury met and also allow me a smooth entrance into my fic! Please leave some critics in the comments so I can improve my writing style!
