Froggy Friend

Summary:

Abigail snaps upright with a gasp, leaning over the bed to reach for her bag that she had dropped onto the floor when she first flopped into the room. "I almost forgot!"

Sebastian sits quietly, eyebrow raised, as he watches her dig in her bag. How she found anything in there was beyond him. The pile of books and papers and pens and… is that my fucking hoodie? And bag of chips and… is that a fucking sock?… that she pulls out onto his bed was enough to make him scratch his head.

She nearly empties out the contents of the second pouch before she finds what she was looking for. "Ha! There you are!"

Or

How Sebastian gets his plastic frog, Gary.

Notes:

Welcome to SebSamber day 4 prompt: Debugging. This one also works with day 6 prompt: Froggy Friend.

This is set in my Uni AU world. A little background lore for the fake dating fic as well as for the future soulmate fic that I've outlined but haven't written yet cause I accidently got sidetracked, whoops. NGL a lot of the lore is the same between the two because I'm terribly unoriginal LOL. But there's no spoilers for either fic in here.

Work Text:

Sebastian groans, stretching in his desk chair, as he feels a pop in his back. He tilts his neck side to side, sighing as it makes satisfying cracks.

Fuck, I need a better chair.

He didn't want to think about how old the solid, wooden chairs were in the dorms. How many asses had sat on them. Enough that there was no longer even an imagination of cushion left. Though, to be fair to the chair, his posture was definitely something that should be improved. Sitting like a shrimp was killing his back. And he had only just turned nineteen.

A quick glance at the clock on his laptop told him it was nearly midnight. Which meant he had spent hours in a terrible sitting position, staring at the screen, trying to get his stupid assignment to work. He had to write a function to accurately determine the day of the week someone was born based on their birthday, taking leap years into account. And, of course, it wasn't working. It kept calculating that he was born on a Friday. Nope. He was actually born on a Wednesday.

He brings his hands up, rubbing his temples like that would do anything to soothe the ache in his head.

He was just about to shut his laptop and call it a night when his door opens and a dramatic Abigail slides in, dropping onto his bed with a deep sigh.

He chuckles. "Party sucked?"

"It was so lame!" she whines into his pillow. "There was nobody there, the alcohol sucked, and the music was too loud."

"So… there was no one there you were interested in hooking-up with. The alcohol was cheap, because of course it was, we're all poor university students. And… I got nothing about the music. Maybe you're just getting old."

"Well, at least I left my dorm! You were sitting at that desk when I left a few hours ago!" she counters. "Sterling was there, though." She turns her head to wiggle her eyebrows at him.

Sebastian rolls his eyes. Of course he was. There was free alcohol. "Good for him."

It was Abigail's turn to roll her eyes. "You need to get out of this room. Or, you can stay in this room, just with some company. Sterling looked rather lonely and—"

"Is there a reason your here and not in your own dorm?" he interrupts, really not wanting to discuss his sometimes-hookup with her at the moment.

She frowns at the abrupt change of subject but, thankfully, does let it go. "I'm not allowed to visit my favourite boy?" She pouts. "Still working on your assignment?" she asks, turning onto her side with her head propped up on her palm.

Sebastian lets out a groan, rubbing circles into his temples again. "It still won't fucking work. It keeps telling me you were born on a Tuesday. It did get Sophia's right but I'm assuming that's a coincidence."

"Ha! There you are! Okay, so, I know that, technically, all of you programmers use rubber ducks but…" Triumphantly, she pulls out a rubber frog, holding it up for him to see.

She wasn't wrong. There was a reason it was called rubber duck debugging. Although, how the fuck she knew about that…

"I remember you mentioning it a few weeks ago when you were complaining about another assignment and wanting to get a rubber duck to talk the code out to." He had? Sebastian thinks. "But I know you better than that."

Abigail smirks, tossing the frog to him and he catches it easily. The frog was purple with green spots all over it's body.

"Will that work?" she asks.

Sebastian nods, large grin pulling his lips. "Yeah! Thank you! This'll be great!" Jumping off his chair, he takes two steps forward to reach the bed, pulling Abigail into a tight hug.

"Good! Because there's no way in Hell me and Soph can help you with it!" Abigail laughs as she pulls away. Nodding towards the frog, she asks, "So, what are you going to name your new froggy friend?"

Sebastian's lips purse to the side as he contemplates, eyeing the plastic toy. "Gary."

"Gary? Of all the names in the world, Gary?"

Sebastian didn't really appreciate her tone. What was wrong with Gary? "Yep," he decides confidently. "Gary the frog."
