Zoey panicked as soon as she saw the empty, unmade bed. She had only been away for thirty minutes. But now the crutches were gone, and the dresser drawers looked like they had been rummaged through. Clearly Mira had decided to leave, despite her condition.
She immediately pushed her feet into the first pair of shoes she could find, and then left the small cabin. It wasn’t like Mira could get far with a broken leg and crutches, and she was likely somewhere on the walking path.
And as expected, it didn’t take long to catch up to her. She had fallen and was sitting on the dirt path, looking completely irritated and glaring at her leg, which was wrapped in a cast.
Zoey jogged over to her. “Mira! Are you okay?”
“Oh, just hanging around,” Mira said flatly. She fell back onto the ground, looking up at the sky with a blank expression. Zoey had never seen her look so defeated.
“C’mon now, I’ll help you.” As gently as she could, Zoey helped her to her feet. She was wobbly at first with the crutches, but Zoey made sure she didn’t tumble over.
“I can’t sit around doing nothing,” Mira said, frowning. “I need to slash up a demon or two. Or get back on stage.” She had been injured during an unusually nasty battle with a group of demons. Zoey had hoped taking a little trip would take her mind off things and allow her to heal. But Mira remained restless.
“You’ll be able to do all that again. You just need time.” Zoey blessed her with a smile and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. Then she saw that Mira had some pebbles and leaves in her long hair. “Oh, you have rocks in your hair.” She ran her fingers through it, trying to smooth it out and get rid of all the debris.
And she was happy to see Mira perk up some. “I want to walk the rest of this path. Just to see that I can.”
Understanding, Zoey nodded, then began dusting off the dirt from Mira’s clothes with her hand. “I’m going with you, though.”
The two of them started walking, though it was mostly a slow shuffle with Zoey hovering over Mira, who nearly tripped multiple times. The walking path was a pretty long distance, and the sun was going down by the time they reached the end of it.
Mira exhaled and sat down on one of the nearby wooden benches. “That was way harder than it should be.”
Zoey knelt in front of her to examine the cast. On it, she had signed her name at one point, as had Rumi, Celine, and numerous others. It had been an awful injury, and Zoey cringed just remembering the sound of snapping bone.
“This is going to be the longest hiatus Huntrix has ever taken,” Mira said suddenly.
“I know, but we’ll have an awesome comeback.” Zoey wasn’t just saying this to make Mira feel better. She thought it was the truth.
But it was hard to see if Mira was convinced. She sighed and said, “Can you sit next to me, Zoey?”
Zoey did just that and scooted as close to her as possible. She placed an arm around Mira’s shoulder and gave her another kiss on the cheek. “I mean it, it will all be fine. I love you, Mira.” This got a small smile.
“Love you too.” Mira glanced around for a moment. “But we better get back to the cabin. It’s almost pitch black out.”
Nodding, Zoey started to help Mira up from the bench. “Easy now…” she said softly as the crutches shook. It was another slow and painstaking walk back, as they wouldn’t make it back before it was completely dark. Zoey had to worry about every little rock and obstacle that could cause Mira to fall.
But luckily, they made it to the cabin without any major issues. Zoey guided Mira to the couch and put some pillows under her leg to elevate it. “Any pain?”
“Nope.” Mira lay back, lazily gazing at the unlit fireplace.
“Do you want to get washed up? Something to eat? Put on some music?” Zoey asked at a rapid-fire pace. It was so easy for Mira to fall back into her depressive mood with her injury, and Zoey wanted to continue making her feel better.
“Not right now. Honestly, I just want to lie next to you for the rest of the night,” Mira said with a sigh. And soon Zoey was on the couch with her, head resting on her chest.
