The clinical hum of the Haddonfield General emergency room is thick with the scent of antiseptic and damp wool. Monica sits cross-legged on the examination table, her knees pulled tight against her chest, a rough paper sheet crinkling violently beneath her every movement. Her eyes are rimmed in raw, heavy pink, her nose a inflamed shade of crimson. She clutches a damp wad of tissue like a talisman.
"I don't get sick," Monica rasps, her voice congested and scraping against her dry throat. She sniffles aggressively, pointing a warning finger at Phoebe. "Getting sick is for weaklings and pansies! I have an iron immune system, Pheebs. Iron!"
"Mon, you have a fever that could melt butter, and you’re sounding like a clogged garbage disposal," Phoebe says, leaning back against the cold tile wall with her arms crossed, completely unimpressed. "I brought you all the way to Ohio to surprise your girlfriend, not to watch you spontaneously combust in an entryway. You’re staying right here."
A few cubicles down, behind a patterned floral curtain, a doctor’s measured tone carries over the steady beep of heart monitors. "...and this is an anticoagulant to prevent blood clotting."
"Any more, Doc?" a sharp, familiar voice asks, the signature dry sarcasm cutting through the muffled hospital noise.
"Yes," the doctor replies evenly. "An antidiuretic to inhibit urine production. Now we're done."
"Charming," the voice mutters.
A quiet thank you follows, accompanied by the distinct, deliberate clack of high-heeled boots striking the linoleum floor as someone shuffles down from an exam table.
Phoebe’s ears perk up. Her eyes widen in instant recognition. "Gale?" she calls out loudly, stepping around the privacy divider.
Monica gasps, instantly slapping both hands over her swollen, flushed face, curling into a tight ball of pure embarrassment. "No! No, no, no," she groans into her palms. "I wanted to surprise you, but Pheebs made me come to the hospital 'cause of a stupid cold."
The curtain slides back completely. Gale Weathers stands there, sharp as ever despite the slight pallor in her cheeks and a subtle rigidity in how she holds her left side. Her dark hair is coiffed to perfection, her sleek tailored jacket immaculate, contrasting wildly with Monica’s oversize sweatshirt and messy topknot.
Gale stops, taking in the sight of her girlfriend looking utterly miserable and visibly defensive. A soft, rare warmth breaks through her usual sharp exterior. "It's a nice surprise," Gale says softly, stepping closer.
Monica tilts her head up just enough to peek through her fingers, her throat raspy. "Why are you here?"
Gale glances down at her shoulder, brushing off the concern with a flick of her wrist, though her tight posture gives her away. "Serial killer shot me."
Phoebe nods solemnly, as if this is completely routine context. "I was once shot in the butt with a tranquilizer dart meant for my brother's monkey."
Gale blinks, her eyebrows arching high. "That's a normal thing, is it?"
"Is getting shot by a serial killer normal?" Phoebe counters effortlessly, tilting her head. "Or finding a thumb in a can of soda?"
Gale parts her lips to respond, thoroughly derailed by the sheer, unyielding logic of Phoebe Buffay, but the curtain slides back again before she can formulate a reply. The doctor steps into Monica’s bay holding a syringe and a small slip of paper.
"Alright, Ms. Geller," the doctor says, checking the chart. "We’re going to give you a quick penicillin booster to knock out this secondary infection, and here is a prescription for a decongestant. Rest, fluids, and no heavy activity."
Monica winces as the doctor administers the shot, burying her face in the crook of her elbow, though she stays entirely silent—refusing to show an ounce of weakness in front of Gale.
Gale watches the exchange, her expression softening into genuine affection. Once the doctor hands over the paperwork and steps away, Gale steps right into Monica's space, reaching out to gently touch the side of Monica's flushed cheek with the back of her fingers.
"Come on," Gale says, her voice low and surprisingly tender. "My apartment is twenty minutes away. You’re coming with me, getting under a duvet, and letting me take care of you."
Monica looks up, her eyes glossy, a tiny pout forming on her lips despite her best efforts to stay tough. "You don't mind? I look a total mess."
"You look adorable," Gale murmurs, offering a slight, reassuring smile. "And a little pathetic. Let's go."
Phoebe gathers up Monica’s heavy winter coat, tossing it over Monica's shoulders as she slides off the high table. The three of them make their way down the polished hallway, heading toward the automatic glass doors of the clinic entrance.
The moment the doors slide open, a cold blast of December air hits them, accompanied by a sudden, violent downpour. Water sheets off the glass overhang, bouncing aggressively off the pavement and filling the air with a heavy, grey fog.
Phoebe immediately lets out a dramatic whine, pulling her long coat tight around her neck. "Oh, nononono. Rain? Nobody mentioned rain!"
Monica stops dead in her tracks at the threshold, staring out at the deluge with absolute horror. "Are you kidding me?" she groans, her voice cracking halfway through. "I hate going out in the rain! It makes my hair totally frizzy, I'm already shivering, and my throat feels like sand!"
She buries her face in her hands again, completely defeated by the weather on top of her crumbling health.
Gale looks at the torrential downpour, then down at her own expensive leather boots, and finally back at Monica’s miserable, trembling frame. A small, competitive spark ignites in her dark eyes. She buttons her coat, adjusts the collar against the wind, and looks out at the storm with standard Weathers resolve.
"All right," Gale says, pulling her keys from her pocket with a sharp click. She turns to Monica, her gaze steady, warm, and entirely unbothered by the elements. "It's just water. I'm up for the challenge."
