Work Text:
The desert sky was sweltering.
When was it not?
The heat was all encompassing, and Wile E Coyote was left in the middle of it; flat as a piece of cardboard, laid out in a giant anvil sized crater.
He could get up.
Toon logic easily dictates such a thing. He *could* stand and he’d be re-inflated and back to normal— but for once, he was tired.
He’d catch the roadrunner tomorrow. For now.. he just needs to let his eyes close. It didn’t mean he was weak! It just meant he spent all night scheming again. It was hard work!
He isn’t aware how long he’s been sleeping when he finally comes to. All he knows is that the sun has faded from the sky, that warmth is definitely lessened, but it’s gone from unbearable to pleasant.
He hears something before he ever feels it.. a quiet sound.. content and sweet.
“honkkkkkkk….. meep meep…… honnkkkkkkkk… meep meep..”
The coyote takes a moment to even process it. He swears his brain makes a dial up internet tone.
The sound.. It’s foreign to his ears, and yet when he tries to sit up to take the sound in, there’s a firm weight against his chest, pushing him deeper into the sand.
His eyes snap open just when something nuzzles into the ragged fur of his neck.
It’s only then he sees the full picture.
Something Blue and feathery, completely vulnerable, curled up on top of him. Something so close he could taste.
The *Road Runner.* laid out like a prize thanksgiving turkey. For a moment, that’s what he sees; the moment he’d waited seventy seven years for. The smell alone captures him. Sweet and tempting.
he tests the waters… his tongue sticks out, brushing up against those blue feathers he’d only dreamt of plucking. The taste is.. well, how you’d imagine feathers to taste, but it’s the principle of the matter; truly.
the bird doesn’t stir, only nuzzling his head further into the coyote’s fur. The snores continue on.
Wile has every opportunity in the world to bite,, to maim. To do the thing he’d spent his whole life aspiring to.. Kevin would be happy when he brought a roadrunner stew to the city!
But how could he? When the Road Runner was so sweet to cuddle him like this? It would be foul play! Their game would be over!
The coyote is too busy pontificating, all the while licking his bird like a lollipop to notice the snoring come to a halt.
He’s only snapped out of his thoughts when a tongue presses into his fur, licking in return.
The world comes to a stop.
The coyote is finally able to bring himself to sit. Staring in utter confusion as the road runner stands and meeps- he knows that look. The chase is back on.
He scrambles to his paws, conjuring a sign out of nowhere. He had precious seconds to ask the one thing on his mind.
[Why?!]
The roadrunner cocks his head to the side with a silly squeak, pulling out his own sign in turn.
[Didn’t want the vultures to eat you.]
With that, the bird takes one step forward.. and one peck to Wile’s lips…
Before the coyote can even respond, Road Runner’s left in a cloud of dust, letting out an enthusiastic
“Meep Meep!”
